I have cracked one AEB cyl head and maybe another one I will find out when I take it off my car.
Who else has cracked them? And what was the cyl head?

My amb cracked up the #1 spark plug hole when I pulled it to change the head gasket. I probably could have got away with re using it but I found a used awm head for cheap.

It is my pet theory that the AMB heads crack more often because of the silly "mapped cooling system" (ie: electronic manipulation of the thermostat). Specifically the AMB runs 10-15C hotter than the earlier engines during cruise, and upon acceleration it will dump the temp as quickly as possible. I believe running it hotter, and specifically the rapid temperature fluctuations commanded by software, are the cause for higher head gasket and cylinder head failure rates in the B6 1.8T as compared to B5 1.8T.

But that's just my pet theory. And I'm not a even mechanic, so you can take that for what it's worth. Which is nothing. ;)
