on the way home from a 2 hour drive tonight - about 1.5 hours into the drive and after slowing down to pass through a toll booth... got back on the gas to bring her back up to speed when all of a sudden I get a {blinking} cel and the she sputters very rapidly under acceleration (and has no power). It did this for about 30 seconds while I tried to baby her over to the shoulder. As I approached the shoulder - accelerating a bit here and there - the cel went away and the sputtering was gone. So on my way I went. Was able to make it the last 20-30 min without any further symptoms.

Any idea what this is? MAF, O2, Vac line?

Misfires perhaps? Check your plugs. Do you have access to vagcom?

Maybe the coilpacks.

so it could be any number of things [confused] Does my description need to be a bit better?

additional description :: on acceleration, the car had no power. In 2nd gear and on throttle, there was no jolting or anything like that, just a really fast sputtering noise during acceleration. I was going uphill onto a bridge, but before I even got to the top, it went away. So this all took place during maybe a 30-45 sec interval. After that, I babied it, and tried to get on accel a few times to see if it would do it again, but nope, seemed just fine. Boost gauge did seem to be acting a bit funny, but I think that was just in my head. Once I finally got on some flat ground and no traffic I did a few WOT passes and boosting seemed fine according to the gauge.

--edit--
oil and coolant temps were normal the entire ride home... even after this anomaly

--edit--
FYI: the cel was blinking, not constant solid

When that happened to me it was my coil pack. I can VAG it for ya Joe.

coo mike.. thanks - see you in a couple hours? [:D]

does anyone know if they make VAG software for MACs? It's probably time I look into this.

It's most likely the packs

is it common for the packs to suddenly not work for just a short period then go back to normal? Would this same scenario happen to the ICM?

My coil pack would only sputter under WOT.

mine was sputtering under any throttle for that short 30-45 sec period. After that, it was fine under any throttle. [confused]

Yes it is very possible and I have had it happen about 5 times. I once had to limp back home at 35MPH from the nacle one night. Only to have the car fire up at full boost 3 seconds from my front door. You should see those cylinder codes.

would it make sense to go ahead and replace all 4 coilpacks - getting VAG'd may cost me just as much with tolls and gas to meet up with someone in Jersey (I could go up to AutoZone and see if they could do it. They are $82.95 for a set of 4 on ECS

Autozone will Vag it for you. I simply replaced all of mine and kept a set of spares in the trunk.

ive never seen coilpacks be intermittent like that.

when mine went it was always misfireing and spuittering under wot, and never went away

the ICM could cause a more intermittent misfire.

but when mine did it, it started right at 2500 rpm and always did it under boost.

crap! for a sec I was leaning towards ICM, then coilpacks, but now ICM [confused]

What year is your car again? 2000? They don't have ICM's

audisnapr

yes, 2000. LOL - I have no idea. Believe it or not, this is the very first problem I have ever had under the hood in the almost 6 years I've had my car.

That's because your car is a 1999. 2000 cars don't have that part

looks like 2000 dbw don't have ICM's, so coilpacks it is

^^ You have no personlal experience with it. I am telling you I have had CP's fail and minutes later work correctly.

I've had this same problem. It's either your coilpacks, spark plug gap (if chipped) or both. I changed both and the car is running fine now. Good luck.
