Guys,
I thought I would try something new and post real time pics and comments as I install my new Stoptech Trophy Sport 380mm BBK today!
I sourced this kit from Josh and Greg at Excelerate Performance after talking with a few different vendors. It was clear from our first conversation that they were professional and I knew of their reputation for good customer service so it was an easy decision to buy through them. They offered competitive pricing as well, don't hesitate to email them for a quote: sales@ excelerateperformance.com
On with the install!!
Step 1: Get all of the parts together and check the tools list in the included Stoptech instructions to be sure you have everything.

Jacking equipment and standby brake fluid ready to go. My Motul 660 didn't arrive in time unfortunately but I overnighted some Motul 600 on Amazon, we'll see if it arrives in time. And don't worry I would never track with the Castrol Dot 4!

Breaker Bar and 17mm wheel protector socket. Remember to loosen the lugs before jacking up the car!!! I have forgotten this many times before, not a good feeling.
Also, if you have plastic caps on your lug nuts there is a tool near your spare tire in the trunk that looks like a pair of tweezers, find it, use it!

Notches in the side panel tell you where your jacking points are. Also, the car is rigid enough to place front and rear jackstands by just jacking up the front of the car.

Remove brake pad wear sensor from brake pad (pulls straight out), unclip from caliper hangar, and then remove the plug by pushing up on the plastic and twisting, I used a screw driver to gently pry the plastic nub up so it would twist.

Unplug the wear sensor. Later you can either zip tie this away or shorten it and zip tie it away. The two wires just need to maintain a connection with each other to not set off the wear indicator.

I've got a cardboard box I'm using as a drip tray down below and am using an 11mm and 14mm wrench to disconnect the stock brake lines. Note: have the rubber nipples included in the stainless steel line kits ready to go to minimize stoppage from the cars brake lines.

That was definitely messier than I thought, be sure to where nitrile gloves and get the dang nipple on there as fast as you can. You're thinking this won't fit over that threaded bolt but the bolt pushes up out of the way. Still, very slippery and hard to get the nipple on with fluid coming out.

Now for the hardest part of the install if you've never broken your caliper holding bolts loose before. They are tightened to 150 ft lbs from the factory and have some kind of lock-tite on them as well! Luckily I broke mine loose when I replaced my rotors at the track recently. Some spirited braking before you do this will help to warm and loosen the lock-tite (I think). None of that today. Leverage is your friend.

Okay, that was way easier this time. Just my breaker bar and a strong 21mm socket was all I needed. You might consider going to a shop and having them loosen/break-loose these bolts and then retighten them to a much lower torque for you if you know they are factory fresh still.

Mounting bracket on. Factory torque is 150 ft lbs on these bolts I believe. I couldn't quite achieve that, 120-130 ft lbs is probably sufficient. I'll blue loc-tite these bolts at some point (my Amazon order from earlier this week didn't arrive in time).

So good news and bad news. The test fitment was extremely close so I had to do a full fitment test with rotors, wheels, and even tightening some lug nuts. The good news is that the BBK does appear to fit. The bad news is that the wheel balance weights would scrape. I'm going to see if Costco will re-set these for me on the inner edge of the wheels. Has anyone else had to do that?

Are those 19 or 18 wheels?
19's actually. So I called Costco and they have half-height wheel weights, going to try that first (I think it will work) and then do the inner edge mount if not. He said that part of it is side to side balance so best to keep them where they are if possible. I'm taking all my wheels in for this as I may rotate them or may need to move a back to the front if I get a flat.
Never a dull moment on a modding project!!

So sitting at Costco waiting for my wheels now, they showed me the low profile weights and they should clear.
I was thinking, the front dust shields are seriously blocking the air flow from the wheel well into the rotors (that's essentially the intake area for the air flow). I can't imagine a better mod to aid air flow, they are coming out!

I noticed the same clearance issues with brembo 380mm BBK's and the oem 19 inch peelers a couple of days ago, was thinking along the same lines as you getting them re-balanced if I ever wanted to run them again, interested to see the result.

Looks really good, good job on the DIY. I recently installed same kit but with Black Calipers on a Monsoon Gray Black Optics package S4. Those are some big rotors and calipers, they don't look like they will fit until you put the wheel on lol. If you are looking for more upgrades I recommend H&R sway bars and sport springs (1" drop I think from Eibach) to finish it off with some improved handling to go with the BBK. Enjoy your new stopping power.

First of, great 'DIY' guide mate. Good job!
I don't want to mess up your topic, so let me know. If you want i remove my post (with pleasure).
So i noticed you had your doughts about the stock brake dust shields.
Obviously the stock ones aren't as big and not sure if they sure a purpose (in your climate/area).
Incase you looking for an alternative and maybe an additional 'DIY' project....
Basicly i had ordered the stock RS5 brake dust shields and added the VW phaeton air scoopes (you could go with the phaeton dusk shield aswell afaik).
My version

The phaeton shields
http://www.mdracing.co.uk/image/rs4_phaeton_brake_ducts/large/pic12.jpg
Don't know how much fresh air these pull...
But i went a step forward and made my custom air inlet tunnels leading air from the 'foglight' mesh into the wheel well onto the scoops

What rear rotors did your go with? They factory size just slotted?
Stoptech sport rotors. I would say they are similar to OEM but slotted yes. Supposedly Stoptech uses a high carbon content alloy for these but they don't publish the exact metal content. They do have a nicer finish than OEM and an anti-corrosion coating on them, but heat dissipation is my #1 goal and not sure they are better than OEM in that respect. I thought about the JHM lighweight rotors but recently saw West cracked his at the track and that made me look elsewhere. Let me know if y'all are aware of other options I should consider. I did consider ECS two-piece but wasn't convinced they were better than the Stoptechs and in fact they look like they're made by Centric who is Stoptechs parent company anyway. They are probably a little better than what I got just not sure the price difference was justified.
I will say, when I eventually address my suspension, I believe that makes the rear brakes work a lot harder and I'll need to consider the next step in rotors and rear pads at that point in time.

Sways, endlinks, coilovers, and other suspension bits are definitely in my future! I'm thinking full Eurocode and then Bilstein PSS-10, but that is a ways out! This is going to be a track machine, that's the goal anyway! And thank you!

Full eurocode and bilsteins is what I have and the car is a joy to drive. I have the dampers set to 6/10, 10 being the stiffest and there is all most no body roll in corners. There is minimal lean on the initial turn which I'm sure could be eliminated at the higher settings but 6 is pretty rough on the city streets in San Francisco. If you go that way you will not be disappointed at all, I can't recommend it enough.

Don't know how much fresh air these pull...
But i went a step forward and made my custom air inlet tunnels leading air from the 'foglight' mesh into the wheel well onto the scoops
Very cool, thanks for sharing! If I continue to have brake cooling issues I'll definitely look into these options more. Those phaeton air scoops and custom ducts are impressive to say the least!

are you running spacers?
A small spacer would help me sleep at night with that fitment.
(sorry if mentioned, skimmed through comments)
Awesome DIY though, love this stuff
My goal was no spacers as I'm not sure how they'd fair at the track. I do also have a set of track wheels/tires on the way (should be here late next week), and will need to check their fitment as well. I'm getting 19 x 8.5" (+32mm offset) TSW Nurburgrings from Alan at ModBargains with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's mounted on them. If I have any issues I will probably run spacers but I am hopeful I can manage without them! Geojoe has a similar setup and hasn't needed them.

Awesome, I love hearing success stories on my future mods, thank you!

So unfortunately VCDS doesn't want to cooperate and I can't get the EPB (electronic parking brake) into service mode. This brings me to a dead stop on replacing the rear rotors and pads today, bummer.
I go to '53 - Parking Brake' and then 'Basic Settings - 04' but it doesn't look like the proper menus are coming up. I updated VCDS to the latest version, still no luck!! Any advice? I will go ahead and flush the brakes in the meantime but not sure I'll figure this out without talking to Ross Tech.

I have the jhm rear rotors, and the main problem with them for track duty is they don't float. So any serious heart cycling will be a big problem. Probably the best track setup at this point is oem rs4 rotors, but even those have disadvantages. Girodisc made some great ones for a while, but I think they stopped. Apikol might have something.

Beware of old Motive lines, I had a break and lots of fluid in the engine bay and garage floor, not fun, luckily I way overbought on fluid and half of what I had appeared to be enough! Phew! And I had the fittings to repair the Motive on hand, never a dull moment.
Now for some good news! The gap between the wheel weights and the front calipers improved a decent amount after everything was fully torqued down.

Pads are fully bedded in now! So much so that after I got home I could feel the heat emanating from the front and rear rotors and calipers (even after driving 10 minutes on the freeway with zero braking to cool them down!). The front rotors were cracking and pinging after I parked the car too, pretty cool.
The brakes definitely have more stopping power than stock and pedal feel is excellent now that the pads are bedded in. The real test will have to wait until April though when I return to the track. I'm likely picking up some Pagid RS-29's or PFC 11's for my front track pads. There are a few other options I'm still considering also.
So this is my daily driver and track car for now. I'm looking to improve on-track performance while maintaining comfort on the street (to the extent possible).

Yeah I found some customs machined 2mm hub centric shims. As long as you have good studs with plenty of threads you'll be ok, it's the same as having a wheel with 2mm less offset.
The other thing, you may know already is stoptech pads a pretty soft and residue easily (easy bedding) their street pads do not mix well with other pads. So stick with stoptech pads or go with a different brand of pads. don't mix! I don't remember any pads quieter than the stoptech pads you should enjoy the hell out of your new setup.
Btw, what method is used for audi for fluid exchanges ? (Furthest away--> nearest from the master cylinder or do you do it by banks)

Awesome on the hubcentric shims, do you mind sharing your source?
I had planned on switching back and forth between my track pads and the Stoptech streets, will have to look into this more. I believe Joe does this w/o issue but he is in the bed-thoroughly on every swap camp which probably helps. I absolutely plan to do this after my recent issues with pad deposits on my stock brake setup.
For the flush I did farthest to nearest, though not sure what the prefect sequence would be for our cars. That seems to work. Also, I flush frequently so as long as I'm at least getting fresh high temp fluid into the calipers I think I'll be good. I may start going back and forth between Castrol SRF and Motul so that I can go off of the color change of the fluid and be more sure I've achieved a full flush.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to investigate these options some more before my next swap.
The OEM one's aren't bad (the stoptech sport rotors are essentially OEM), they aren't 2 piece (lack of performance) and the obviously don't float. Floating rotors are a must for any car seriously putting heat into the brake system. The RS4 rotors are semi-floating I believe (ie they can float in the radial direction), but I believe the center hat is still iron.

Also, considering how balls out you're going (which is awesome BTW), you might consider getting a set of Ti shims in between the caliper pistons and the pads. I got a .5mm set from racingbrakes.com They should help provide a buffer to prevent fluid boiling. Although, the trophy kit doesn't appear to have dust shields over the pistons (can't really tell from your pics on the last page), so maybe the need is less for shims.

What are the odds I post after another member named Ryan. OldSport's name is also Ryan! [:p]
Too funny!
StopTech doesn't recommend the shims as a fix unless you do indeed have a problem with boiling fluid. With the right part for the application there shouldn't be any issues however. there are too many variables to this topic so we will see how the brakes respond at the track!

Ryan,
I am very impressed. This is one of the most detailed and thorough write ups I've seen over the years. We especially appreciate the business and the kind regards! I'm anxious to see what your first impressions of the kit are like on the road and track. I hope this writes home to some people who are hesitant to buying BBk's for whatever reason. If anyone has any questions or would like product information and/or pricing about StopTech stuff, please give us a call or shoot us a PM.

Thanks again for all of your help Greg, I'm very happy with the results!!
