View Full Version : Crankshaft and timing

So Replaced the water pump and timing belt about 300 miles ago. Everything was fine until one day I was driving to work and it started making a noise so I shut it off and coasted into a parking lot. Turns out the timing belt tensioner bolt that goes into the block snapped. I locked the cams but didn't lock the crank. I put it all back together and noticed my top dead center was of on the crankshaft pulley. I think i moved it a tad when i was removing the bolts that connect it to the crankshaft. So I moved it a tooth to where I thought it should be and I put it all back together nervously and nervously started it. Everything seems to be fine. My question is if my crank was off by one tooth would the timing be off and it wouldn't run at all and bend the valves or could it be a tooth off an still run? is there anyway to tell where the crank should be? My thought was maybe that the crank lock bolt would only lock at top dead center? or will it lock at any place around the crank?
