View Full Version : Totalled my S4... what would you do now?
IanVr6

Don't want to go into details of what happened, but at least I'm ok. Car was on its side and had to get out through the passenger window.
25-30K in damages.
I'm still waiting on insurance to tell me how much they are going to give me. My HREs were included in my policy so at least I get that money back.
I've been looking around to see what should I do. Went to the Audi dealership and nothing excites me there. Love the 4.0TT, but don't want to drive a boat and I really don't want to downgrade either by buying a S3.
Spoke to my salesman and he is willing to help me out with a new S4, but I'm not that excited of getting into a new car note with basically the same car. I need an upgrade(not that I really wanted to).
Options are:
1. Find a used 2011-2013 S4 with some mods here on Audizine
2. Buy a BMW M4 coupe - never thought I would say it as an Audi fanboy, but its the EURO sports car to get right now.
3. Porsche?
4. New Golf R?
5. Don't buy anything now until summer of 2016 when maybe Audi will have the new R8, TTRS or RS3 available. - Seems like a long time to wait.
6. *add yours here
Not really into muscle cars, unless you convince me. Good luck with that.
Want to stay below 100K.
I'm pretty bummed out...

Sorry to hear about your car. I always thought it was one of the more tastefully modified examples.
I'll sell you my 2012....
Seriously, if I was in that position, I would consider the M3/M4 first, or wait for the RS3.
I probably wouldn't do a new S4 with a new model coming out in the next year or so. I like the Golf R a lot, but why not just do the S3 at that point? Same basic car, and there is a certain something you don't get with the Golf R.
I would also consider a Mustang GT350 as I think the new Mustangs are pretty damn nice. I also think the Cayman S (or especially the GTS trim) is really a nice car, but damn, they are getting close to 911 territory. I'd almost splurge the extra $40k at that point and get a GT3 (I've thought about it....).

First- we're all glad you are ok and we didn't lose "one of our own"
Option 1: Buy the car back, find a clean/ well-optioned Avant....and BINGO! with your donor parts, THAT would be a unique and great ride.
Option 2: Cadillac CTSV is supposed to be a M5 beater, if you want something different.
Option 3: RS5.

Single, living in a warm weather place and no need for 4 doors? Clearly the easy button here is a '01-'05 Porsche 911 Turbo, the 996 generation. Stellar performance, rock solid reliability and they're WAY down on the depreciation curve right now. You can easily get one for under $40k at the moment...

Sorry to hear about your car but glad you made it out OK.
If it were me I'd get either:
1. new Cayman GTS
2. used R8 you can find some for under $100k although probably V8 only. Slap an armytrix exhaust on it if that's your kind of thing and you got a beast
3. new Vipers are a good price(since dodge is slashing $15-20k from the price) and apparently a great car. But you like Euro and most don't care for it's big bore V10 sound
4. Get something simple to wait out the B9 S4... possibly RS4
Dr GP

I'm on my 3rd b8 S4 because I can't find anything I like better that is out there right now in this price range. Would consider a new Corvette, but thats just me. Would you consider a CPO S6? I don't think the M4 is a bad choice either.
golfinz
01-28-2015, 10:53 AM
For 100k, and if you want something now, I would consider:
New M3/4
CPO Porsche (any one really)
New GTR
New Viper (if you get a good deal)
New Z06
New RS5
If I was in your shoes (single/no kids), I wouldn't even consider a big sedan. Sorry to hear about the accident, but being 6ft up on the right side of the soil is what really matters.

M3\M4 or Cayman GTS or Corvette?
I started another thread a few days ago. Got a lot of good advice. Basically same dilema. 13 s4 lease ending in a few months and don't know what to get. Although I am strongly leaning towards buying a DD for a few months and see what changes 2016 brings to M3, 340i, M2 etc Also hoping the M3 will stop comming out of dealer allocations with demand dies down a bit so I can get mroe than 8% off (upto 12-14% on ED).

Either the M4 or go with the 4.0TT. i made this switch from the b8.5 s4 to the C7 S7 and love it. I know its bigger but it honestly doesn't drive like a big car. lower a C7 paired with some sways and links and it will handle with the best of them. Eurocode proved that with their in house S6 during the Eurotuner GP.

Looks like you have the GC SRT-8 if you need a "practical" vehicle to haul people or stuff........ I would be looking at the following:
**Used Porsche 911 Turbo or GT3 (Cayman handles great and is an awesome car to drive but you may get bored with the power quickly)
**New C7 Z06 or gently used C6 ZR1..... maybe even a C6 Z06 with the carbon package (some great deals to be had on the C6 ZR1/Z06 cars now that the C7 Z06 is out)
**2008+ Dodge Viper
**Audi R8 V10 (while the 4.2 is still a beautiful car it's not going to make you happy from a performance standpoint). You may have to consider going up a few grand in terms of price to have a better selection of cars as the sub $100K inventory is scarce.
**BMW M4
**MB SL63
**MB C63
**Camaro ZL1/Z28 (this may be into the "muscle car" spectrum but worth a mention)
**Mustang Shelby GT 500 (2013 or newer..... again this may be in the "muscle car" category but also worth a mention)
**Caddy CTS-V
**GTR
Sorry to hear about your car..... glad to hear you're OK..... cars can be replaced and people cannot!!!! Best of luck on whatever decision you decide to make with a replacement vehicle!!!

The car makes fantastic HP and in a straight line it's an absolute beast but.... it's a big ass, heavy car!! If you're looking for a "sporty" feeling car that is tossable it's not that car. I was talking with a close friend last week who has a Challenger SRT-8 (also owns a 2009 Viper and has owned a variety of modded cars in the 700-800hp range). A good friend of his just got the Hellcat and let my friend take it for a nice long drive where he was able to get all over the car. He said it's an absolute monster and while it handles very well for a car of it's size and purpose it's nothing like the Viper in terms of a "driver's" car. The Hellcat is the true definition of "muscle" car..... not "sports" car.

If you want to stick with Audi and are looking to upgrade, I'd get an S6. I know you don't need the sedan since you're single but that's a very understated, practical choice that will go when you tell it to and keep you in style. If not that, I'd look at a Cayman. Seems like a lot of folks dig'em and you don't see them everywhere. I'd skip the 911 and M cars because you do see them everywhere.
Anyway, glad you're OK. Have fun shopping.

In a somewhat similar position. My lease is up this year and my car was just in an accident with unibody damage so I don't want to buy it out.
I am going to place an order for an M3 in late spring and do euro delivery. I like the RS5 a lot but the lease figures were so much higher than the M3 I couldn't justify it (about $400 more a month at least). The new M3 is simply a fantastic car and is the newest and best option out there. The S4, though great, is long in the tooth and I don't like to repeat cars.

fixed.
this is nothing new in the auto industry, car makers borrow parts all the time, it saves them money on a part that otherwise no one would ever care about.
my comment about the hellcat was a bit satirical but none the less it should at least be entertained, in the 50-100k range there is a car for every single taste and demographic. If i was single with no kids, honestly I would prolly end up in a jag, if I was married (i am) i would end up in a tesla, and if I had kids I would end up in an acura mdx or gmc terrain.
but there are a plethora of cars out there for every suit style and need at that price range and they all are gorgeous.

Honestly, I prefer the sedan, coupes have been a pain in the ass for day to day. I like my friends '15 Vette, such a great upgrade from the previous generation, but I wouldn't own it as my only car.
My list would be :
B8.5 S4 / S5
...however...everyone drives a BMW / Audi / Mercedes / etc my only upgrade to the S4 will be something unique

Yes you can. Send the insurance company every invoice you have for aftermarket parts. I got back close to 75% back for all my mods and none were even listed in my policy.
you can try this, it's worth a shot, but for most insurances you would need to declare them and be factored into your rate calc.

I would go for a 997 GT3 or a used R8 until the new R8 2016, NSX, or new new Ford GT40 comes out.
A used 997 GT3 and a used are R8 would be more fun than the M3/M4 on the street. I find the M3/M4 too bit lacking in grip compared to the other 2 cars for the street.

i disagree, i would bet this car comes in at $150 OR below. it's only got a v6 twin turbo, and an engine that was sourced from another Ford car so the R&D costs associated with this are largely in the aerodynamics. Of which, most of the $$ spent is on safety which they get a pass on because cars with low production numbers do not get the same treatment as high volume rides. (I think)
The GT could very well be a few grand over a GT-R cost but time will tell.

Had a friend who owned an F-Type R cabrio. Drove nice, but I found it quite uninspiring. Especially when another friend turned up in his E-Type Series 4 V12.
If only the F-Type really moved me emotionally. Saw a side view of the coupe, and initially mistook it for a F-Califorinia, which is probably my least favourite current F car.
He's now sold the F-Type after a year, and bought a C7 RS6 Avant in matte Daytona Grey.
If you really got the moolah OP, buy a 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 and keep it for 20 years. Last of the Mezger engined 911s in its most potent form. Ltd edition, so a real $$$ machine if you hold on to it long enough. Look at the price of a 1972 2.7RS now.

Ian, what are you looking for in a car? The ones listed in the your OP are very different in style, taste and handling. Its not even fair to compare them to an S4.
The input from everyone is joke. 997, Cayman, R8, M3, M4... are we really comparing these or just blurting out sweet rides? I'd hardly call the Cayman a step up too.
Have you driven any of the cars you listed? I would start there as the M3 and M4 are completely different handling machines than any Audi. I personally loved my M3, but sold it for since it was a coupe and it pained me every morning seeing it parked in the 3rd stall only to gain 3k miles every year. I had modded the shit out of it too making it not so daily driver friendly.

I have only driven the M3/M4. I want a daily driver that is an upgrade to the S4. I'm selling the Jeep SRT. Great SUV, but got bored.
I'm not really feeling a Porsche as a DD and to get something really fast you have to go over 100K.
Jaguar is a nice option. Will look into it.

Cheaper to mod? I'll have to switch to an American or Japanese car. Not my cup of tea.

I only had my wheels on the policy.
Are you sure that wheel coverage will pay out when the car is totaled? I had coverage for an aftermarket stereo on a prior car, and when the car was totaled the insurance company didn't give me a dime for the stereo. Turns out the extra coverage was only for theft.
BTW, giving a list of mods to your insurance company might not be a good idea. If your accident was speed related they could claim your mods led to the crash and invalidated your coverage.

If you say so... Insurance companies make money by minimizing their payouts. If you give them an excuse on a silver platter they might just take it. It has happened before. You probably think your insurance covers track days too.

For fucks sake... Insurance companies do not make money by minimizing payouts. [facepalm]
That's the equivalent of saying we make money by shortchanging or scamming people out of something they paid for. Insurance companies make money by making smart underwriting decisions, insuring people that are deemed low risk and ensuring their premium dollars are well spent by paying legitimate claims and the money that is owed, not a cent less or more.
Don't be ignorant. Insurance is one of the highest regulated industries, in the U.S. at least. Denying a claim takes multiple experts' approval, at least in the company I work for.
Aftermarket endorsements are just that: endorsements designed to cover the aftermarket part in the event of a loss. If your specific endorsement was specifically designed to cover only in the event of theft and you didn't know that, then you should have done more research when buying that endorsement and ensured that you were purchasing the coverage you needed.
And no, track events are usually excluded from standard insurance and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know why. Insurance for track events exists specifically for that purpose.

......but traction will be an issue....DSC will kick in all the time even in MDM mode and without it the car can get abit loose......
This is one reason why I now drive an AWD Audi, until other Mfrs build a reasonable alternative. High HP RWD & traction control is a pain, but the traction control can keep one out of trouble on the street. I hate it when traction control kicks in with a big power pullback & delay on the engine. I have driven a few times with traction control off, but cornering on the street can get a bit more tweaky. On the track high HP RWD is just fine, on the street not so much.
The M5 & E63 can be had with AWD, but not the C63 and M3/M4 - it will happen eventually.
IanVr6

AWD is not a big deal here in the south.

The manufacturing of the GT will be outsourced to a subcontractor since it's largely CF, so it's possible the business case for this is not necessarily sales targets. The main purpose is most likely homologation for LM GTE and obviously a halo car to build brand equity. Ford performance wants to start selling lots of the "lesser" performance cars.

Here are some crappy iphone pics.

Is anyone considering the new ATS-V. Looks pretty fast and will finally be available soon.
