$500 special. Car runs pretty bad. I think it's a 2001, I'll double check. it has 150,000 miles. 1.8L.

What do you guys suggest doing to get it running correctly again? My guess is bad coil packs

Could be coil pack but with that I will invest in new spark plugs as well

^^ I'd go new coil packs and plugs

That looks incredibly clean for $500, how's the interior?

Swap the coils to cylinders 1 and 4 and see if the faults switch cylinders. If they do, you have bad coils. Definitely would do spark plugs too.

With the "Random/Multiple Misfires" code, you may also want to take a look at the PCV components as a leak can cause misfires. I agree with the others that it does look like a very clean car for $500.

What app is that? Are you using a bluetooth dongle with it?

The seat has a tear in it but other than that, it's just dirty. I'll get better pics up tomorrow and a video up of the sound. The steering felt heavy. Might be low on fluid.

Main downside of this car is that it's not a manual :( It will be easier to sell to some new driver maybe

They lost or broke the switchblade key so they made a "custom" key out of wood........

http://www.lemurmonitors.com/ yep. it can tell if your car is going to pass emissions or not and will read you live data. Can't beat it for 100 bucks. they have it on amazon with free shipping if you have prime. check it out it's neat

That homemade keyfob is pure Bawler Status.

Super clean car for $500. Like others have said, swap the coils to see if the misfire follows. If it does, then you know your problem. Swap plugs while you are at it and enjoy. As for the seat 99.9% of 1.8t driver's side seats develop tears at some point.

The headliner is sagging in the back. Is that common? I have no coils ordered and I'm going to buy new spark plugs today. The oil light came on but it was full with oil, what does that mean? Paint is in terrible condition. It's like a satin finish now :(. I wonder if a good polishing would help it at all.

When the oil symbol appears is it shown in red or yellow? Does it say "min" or "sensor" along with it? if it doesn't say either of those and is in red then the oil symbol is likely the no/low oil pressure warning which is not good. I can't tell if in yopur second to last photo if that's the oil warning in yellow you are talking about or if its for something else.

sagging headliner is not common place with the B5

That is what I would do as well, easy way to check if the coils are bad or if the problem lies elsewhere.

Edit: I see you already ordered new coils.

Well, if you're gonna drop $100 on a diagnostic cable I would've spent $7 on a blue ebay cable and registered the cable for $100. That would give you access to most of VCDS' functions like throttle body alignments and output tests.

Ha, I found that same oil cap in a junkyard. Shaved it, bead blasted it, and put satin clear coat on it. Looks a lot better now.

The headliner sagging is quite common, these cars are getting up there in age and the glue loses its strength.

Was it the red oil light? If so, you've got oil pressure issues.

I have an obd cable but this thing is cool because it can tell me why my other cars won't pass emissions like this one ford probe I had. Just anther gadget to the collection lol

Better shot of the paint, it's really depressing

So all I need to do is replace the oil sensor, right?

This car isn't quattro right?

How is this to-do list looking so far?

-change spark plugs
-change coil packs
-change oil sensor
-hope that's the only problem
-detail the car
-remove pin stripe
-ignore the rip seat and saggy head liner
-profit and enjoy?

Pretty much. May want to inspect timing components/service them.
The parts you mentioned changing should be with oem parts. Those are areas you won't want to get cheap parts for.

hmmm that has not been my experience on any of my current or past B5s nor any of my friend's B5s. Perhaps I am just lucky.

Quick update:

I cleaned it up a little. No more pin stripe!!! I checked the power steering fluid and it was very low. A little lower than minimum. What could have caused it to go that low? The oil didn't even register on the dip stick. I still need to replace the coil pack. Dealer wanted 56 bucks for one. Tons of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. It smells really bad as well.

The driver door won't stay open. It keeps trying to close on level ground. Why is it doing that??

Thanks for everyone's compliments and advice :)

Should I install this? Came with a Jetta I bought and I had it for a year brand new and never used it. Not sure if BOVs are bad for these cars.

Is there any parts that would be interchangeable from a 2002 B6 A4??? I'm not sure if the seat would fit/work. The door on my a4 is really annoying on my a4 because it keeps wanting to close. I havent figured that out yet
