So i just got this 2001 1.8 the other day and sometimes its hard to start. I noticed that the gauge on the dash is only reading right around 12 volts. It has a brand new battery from 10-2014 and i had it charged and tested just to see and it tests fine. Sometimes when i try to start it, you can hear the starter whining but not actually cranking the engine at all. You have to turn the key all the way off and then try again. sometimes 3-4 times before it actually engages the stater. Once it starts, the car runs just fine. I went for a drive the other night that lasted a little over a hour, with the lights and everything on and the voltage stayed right around 12v the whole time. Going to pull the alternator in the next few days and take it in for to get tested as well. Would a bad alternator continue to charge my battery to 12v though?

Yep. Prolly the alternator. Are you headlights dimmer then they should be?

I dont know. Im not used to the projectors so they are a hell of a lot brighter than my prefacelift yellow hazed out headlights... I know usually a bad alternator will make the lights flicker and these dont seem to do that

Here's my two cents: I also have a 2001 1.8, the gauge always reads 14v, and even with the heated seats on, doesn't go much lower. Sat for a couple weeks, tried to start it yesterday, no good, not enough juice, BUT it still engaged the starter and tried to turn the engine. You may have a bad starter and alternator. Put a digital meter on it with the engine running, if it says anything less than 13.8, ditch the alternator. It can charge the battery at 12.5 volts, but it also has to run the rest of the crap in the car, radio, ecu, dcu, heat, lights, all that emissions garbage, etc.
