View Full Version : SMS Stage 2 B8 S4 Dyno Results

SoloMotorsports

Check out our Shop B8 S4.
It came to us as a stage 2 car with APR Intake, full APR exhaust and upgraded APR cooling.
Naturally we felt obligated to tune it for a higher power level.
The results were impressive. +38whp +6wtq over the existing stage 2 tune.
We have the upgraded HPFP going in next month for some E85 tuning. Be sure to stay tuned for those results.

Nice results improvement all being the same with just the tune upgrade.

Question. Are these motors hungry for more air or fuel on top? I noticed that both graphs show the HP goes flat at about 6k to redline. Any other motor I would say a cam upgrade or porting the heads would be in order. As you are the tuner, what is your take?

Currently you must send in your ecu or bring the car into the shop for the initial flashing. Once unlocked our dealers are capable of flashing simos 8.4 for revisions and upgrades.
Yes E85 is comming shortly!

Very impressive numbers.... nice work. what size pulley are you using? is it comparable to APR or GIAC/AWE? Did you start working on 2014 models yet?

Why tune for a fuel that's not readily available to the masses such as E85?? IMHO tuning for E85 seems like a waste of resources, maybe for the guys in the Midwest is not. Good job on the HP improvement [up]

They do custom tunes, so what downside is there to offering an E85 tune? It offers race gas performance for the price of regular gas (the ethanol itself is cheaper of course, but it requires 30% more fuel per volume, so it comes out about equal). You guys may not have it out west, but basically everywhere else in the country is covered, for the most part.

We tune many platforms for E85 as it's quite popular with our customers who mod their cars.
The car should respond well to e85. We've dabbled with e40/e60 blends on this platform already so I'm confident full e85 is possible on stage 2 with the upgraded hpfp.

My car on an e40 mixture performed flawlessly on a 104 octane map, can't imagine how great it will work with e85.

Imo you'd need a flex fuel sensor tune or map switching by end user for it to be something anyone would want

Just conjecture but that looks like version 1 of APR stage 2 in the graph. The SMS results look very similar to APR stage 2 version 2 (which has been around for 2+ plus years now). But I might be wrong. Definitely good to see other tuners getting in the mix. Also wish we had access to E85 up here!

yea e85 is hard to get on the east coast as well. Its probably some like 1/50 gas stations have it. Ive only seen it once somewhat local. Its more in the middle of the country due to that is where it is made. Hoping to see more info on the ability to tune Can you tune any cars that are B8.5 and up with just shipping you the ecu. Ive heard that you cant, it all has to be done via the obd 2 port. Due to security of the car.

Have you had any long term issues with people running full E85 in the s4 with the corrosive factor of full E85. Are you running the HPFP due to volume needs or due to the fuel crossiviness. ??

cspcrx
12-26-2014, 10:45 AM
I would like an E85 tune as the highest pump gas you can get here in Phoenix is 91. E85 is available almost everywhere in the valley. Seems like those running 91 oct tunes, no matter the tuner, see little to no results. Then you go to the 93 oct tune and you start to see some noticeable increase in the power.

As S4M3 said, we will eventually get our car out to the track and get some 60-130 runs in. We also have a half mile event in Florida coming up soon.
We certainly aren't hiding behind dyno numbers. If our customers go to the track and share the data we will gladly share it, but the majority of our B8 S4 customer don't go to the drag strip.

E85 Testing has been underway since yesterday.... so far we have noticed a good bump in power. Fuel trims up top are pulling about 1% so there is plenty of fuel with our upgraded HPFP.
We pulled it off the dyno to drive it on the street and get some cold starts on it.

I work at Solo so it would not be fair to say anything, but tune is great I am sure some of our customer can chime in.

I've had the Stage 2 tune for about seven months now, and it continues to put a smile on my face. Paired it with some 19 lb TSW Bathurst wheels that you all also put on for me, and it's basically kept me from wanting to buy a M4 lol.

Haven't been able to get in a drag strip run yet, but I'll hopefully have a run before winter hits.

Out west is hard, the nearest station for me is over an hour away. CA hasn't embraced E85 as other states have, I can order 55gal drums but too much of a pain...
I wish we had E85, 91 is water down but at least I have 100 Oct, 5 miles away [up]

Will you offer 91/100 oct tunes for 8.5?

I wouldn't generalize it as out west. I live in Washington and live three minutes away from a station that offers E85; have multiple stations in the vicinity. Sorry you guys get that horrible watered down 91 octane there. You gotta pay to live in the Bay.

How did she do? I figure we're a few days into the following week, so plenty of time to upload the slips [:D]

Also, wondering about the cost of the non "big 3" tunes (solo, epl, uni, etc), are they significantly cheaper than the big guys? From a business standpoint, they're the new guys with not a lot of history/data (yet?) so they need to entice folks with price and other features (flash at home). Guess, it depends on what people are comfortable with. One side says to buy the tune that's the most proven, the other side says they don't care about 1/4 mile times (it feels fast enough) and it's a good price. Ahh, the great debate...

At the minimum, if you are going with an unproven product (eg haven't been used on cars for multiple years/multiple users who are driving the cars at strips/road courses etc), I would want to see logs that show the tune is performing and not compromising engine safety.
