Hi guys, going to be coming through Colorado on a road trip, and was thinking of going up Pikes Peak, but I'm worried that it'll be closed for bad weather. How often do they close the road? Is it driveable when it's snowy? I've been through some pretty heavy snow before on just all-seasons, but I also wasn't trying to climb a mountain then either.

If Pikes Peak is a bad idea in late December (I'm thinking it's not the greatest idea), can you guys fill me on any other roads that I should drive? My plan is to come from Amarillo up to CO Springs and then through Utah and Grand Staircase-Escalante to Las Vegas.

There's my route that I've planned so far. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Looks to be a good route. I'm not sure but I think they close the road during parts of winter. Check out this website for more info.http://www.pikes-peak.com/attractions/pikes-peak-americas-mountain/

I could be wrong, but I thought the route to the top was permanently closed in winter?

I lived in Woodland Park for years. I drove by Pikes Peak everyday. But I never once drove up the mountain due to the slow speed limit. The pass however is great fun every time if you know where the cops sit. There are tons of fun mountain roads once you get here, even if Pikes Peak is closed. Is the train open to the top?

The Cog Railway stays open year-round, but I think it's unable to make it to the summit in January and February (maybe March, too... not sure).

I figured there would be a low speed limit, but ever since I saw Race into the Clouds or whatever it is, I've been wanting to go up Pikes Peak.

Mt. Evans is also a nice drive.

I know you can't get to the peak. Just sharing options. Either way, after looking at his planned course it's out of the way.

They do come the peak in winter. However, the ride up to the rest area that they close is still amazing. Should be even better now that the whole mountain is paved.
