Just wondering if anyone has ever upgraded from their S4 to a Porsche. Or has both concurrently. Or did you go into a RS5 or RS6? I think if I ever upgrade I would get a Cayman or Cayman S would be the next step. What was your guys thoughts when you did it if you did? Just looking for some food for thought if I ever want to upgrade from the S4 I would get a Cayman. Id love to have an R8 but its out of my price range. If its a dumb question flame on me I don't care.

a used v8 R8 would run you the same price as a new cayman after you option it out. Remember that porsche has a bajizzlion option layouts and that it can easily be 30-40k on top of the list price.
just saying, if you really want an R8 they are not exactly crazy out of reach cars and the v8 is a pretty reliable motor, little slow, but i mean who cares when you are in an R8?

I bought an S4 because i need the space so a 2 door Porsche is out of the question until it becomes a 3rd car.
I've constantly upgraded everytime I changed cars in the past but I feel that at this level there is no "natural progression" to something better in the 4-door similar size "sports car" category.
Probably why we see lots of members go from a b8 to b8.5 and not to something else

Really depends on what you're looking for out of your car, none of those cars are really the same. I have all three currently, but I picked up a Cayman GTS for the purposes of tracking it, it's incredibly nimble and you can totally feel the nearly 1k less lbs of weight.

I've been looking at Cayman S's for a while... then I started blowing by them on the track, and it made me like my S4 even more. Practical, versatile, quick and plush, all with a 6spd... tough to find this anywhere else.

I priced out a cayman s, with similar equipment as my new s4 Stronic, it MSRPed at $81K!! and was not a 4 wheel drive car.Yes my S4 is NOT a Porsche , S4 is very heavy compared to cayman s, cayman s is faster, but for me it is not as good of an all around car. Quattro is worth the reduced price of admission.

The video is of an idiot who admittedly knows practically nothing about cars. He doesn't understand the difference between an 4.2L engine and a 85L gas tank.
He entered his car in the Gumball 3000 race, and had to do the brakes and other maintenance, along with paying for gas. No surprise there.
He complains about gas mileage in an R8. It is a supercar, not a Honda Civic.
He installed an aftermarket exhaust that costs more than $10,000.
The only thing this video tells you is that people can know very little about cars, and yet still own a supercar if they have enough money to burn.
I talked to a guy who had owned a lot of exotic cars, including an R8. He told me that the R8 was by far the most reliable out of all of them, and he regretted selling it. He owned it for a year, and got more than what he paid for it when he sold it.
The R8 is not going to be cheap to run, but if you have the $80k to buy one, then you obviously should have the money to maintain it.

Having both is what I'd recommend. For me the 911 is not practical enough due to limited rear seat size and lack of trunk space.
Of course this depends on your own personal needs. I have a dog and buy/carry stuff bigger than the 911 can handle on a regular basis.
My friend has a Cayman and he also has an SUV because of these reasons
For what it's worth, the Cayman has a decent amount of combined trunk and frunk space, way more than the R8. For anything else that's large and has to fit in one spot you'd need an SUV or something. Nice thing I like about my S4 was being able to fold the rear seats down and fit a giant tv in it.

Yea good food for thought. But Id like to have the Porsche or R8 as more of a play toy that will last for 10+ years or so. Not putting many miles on it. My S4 is a 3rd car for my and my wife now. We have a Suv and a beater Honda also. I love the S4 line its so nice and versatale. It has like everything your looking for in a sports sedan. The avant is like the perfect car.

Yeah that video lost me when he was confused about a 4.2L car being able to hold 80+L of gas. I bet he takes it to the dealer for a brake job and gets them to install his winter wheels as well

I completely gave up at 2:30-2:45 and stopped watching entirely. for anyone not wanting to spend 12 minutes with this fruit tart please go to that time and listen for 15 seconds and you get the gist of this paste eater.
anyways, it's the 4.2 v8 a little bit spiked up, but the same engine from the rs4 iirc.
maintenance on this car (and this is prolly one of the cars I would be upset with if it was not in manual because my dick gets hard when i see gated boxes) is going to be a cake walk especially if you do some of the stuff yourself.
the r8 is prolly second to porsche in terms of reliable daily driving and high performance cars (i am reluctant to call the v8 r8 a supercar because it's not exactly a quick car, I would even say that a tuned+pulley'd s4 would more than likely hold it's own against the v8) however the r8 looks simply stunning, and the reason why I pointed it out to OP.

Yea I love the look of the R8. But yes I think its a little under powered with the V8. The v-10 is awesome in there but takes the car to a whole nother price level. Yea its the same engine from the RS4 but with different intake manifold and 2 throttle bodies. Im wondering how they got the same power out of it with 2 tb's. Im surprised its not a little more. And the sound is mind blowing from that v-8 ive had a B7 S4 with the v8 and it sounds amazing.
I do all my maintenance on all of my cars unless its cheap enough at the dealer to just let them do it. But working on cars is not that hard with a little know now for the maintenance part of it. Honestly their is really nothing special about the car for the cost that makes it crazy to work on or anything like that. It doesn't have special technology. Its just the ASF and the design of the car for the cost and the engine setup in the back. and special design of the interior.

I'm currently waiting on what the 2016 981.2 cayman has in store for us. I just paid off my 2011 S4 and it would make the perfect downpayment for a new cayman S. I also have a 2006 wrx as my daily/beater car that I'll keep till it falls apart. Or I could be smart and do nothing and enjoy not having to make $700 car payments monthly anymore.

I would not buy a used R8, especially the V8. Yes it's a R8, but it's slowww.
I'm waiting for the new R8 V8 which should be around by 2016 and hopefully come with the 4.0TT.
You will have a nice new car with warranty that will be fast. [evilsmile]

Yea the RS7 looks and probably is just as nice and everything. But I don't want a car that big of have the need for "true" back seats Refering to the back seats in a Porsche.
Well yea that 4.0T motor is nice and yea my decision isn't for sometime down the road just looking for food for thought.

i think i would, given that i would never track it, and there are no roads that would ever bring me close to edge with the r8 the v10 would be wasted on me. 400 ponies is enough for me, but for the way that car looks i think the used market there are flat out bargains out there. when the new model drops the used price will plummet as well.

I love the way the R8 looks. The problem for me is spending that kind of money on a car with relatively poor straight line speed (v8). Sure, it's great on a track but I'm not interested in tracking the car. I'd rather pull of a 997T for similar money.

I see your point. If you want an exotic to drive around town, a used R8 would be a great choice. Especially if you're single. Just don't race anyone.

+1, but in 5 years, I'm eyeing GTR, 911 4S or R8. Yea, I'll be that guy making posts about having to spend 2k on 20" Winter tires.
RS7 daily would be nice!

I own both, 911 TT isn't a daily driver. If it was I think you'd wanna kill yourself. S4 is great for DD and it's quick enough. There's zero room in 911 for anything. You're luck if you can fit 2 bags from the store in it.

yea My S4 isn't even a daily driver. Once it snows it will be put away till its gone. but down the road i want a nice play toy for me lol and the wifee has her S3 or A3 lol.
Since i have a company car and 3 personal vehicles the S4 takes a backseat as a daily. When it snows the wife drives the Suv. I think i would get an R8 just because it would turn more heads than a porsche would. My dream car is a Ferrari but maybe when I'm retired and well off maybe lol.

I haven't seen many used R8's (V-8's) for under $100K and those that were seemed to be well used. Love the looks of the car but I find them pretty expensive. Maybe not compared to a Lamborghini or Ferrari but expensive compared to other used sports cars including Porsche. Where are you guys seeing bargain R8's?

78k for an 09 with 25k on it not to bad didn't go into options but quick glance its 5-6 years old and already lost atleast 40K+ on it Its like lossing a S4 value every 6 years lol

i find it quite the opposite, i find it hard to see a 6 figure used v8 r8. i mean the base msrp on these things is 115,000 selling at 100k for used just makes no sense, at that price point you are better off ordering brand new.

I would tend to agree on a used $100K+ car but $100K is something like 2 years old. $80K is for a 5-7 year old car. I agree it is further depreciated but not sure I'd consider it a bargain I guess.

ye I agree. If I was going to spend 100K to buy a used one whats another 16K to get a brand new one and cream your pants when you get a brand new R8 hahahaha. The only thing I don't like about the R8 is the seats. Atleast the seats for NA. I would have to buy the euro seats and install them in there. We got shafted on the RS4 seats too

i see it more as there really have been no changes to the r8 since it launched so you would be getting a car that was more than likely babied with a rock solid v8 motor and still looks brand new to the general public.
hard to tell the differences between an 08 r8 and a 13 r8 ya kno?

I purchased a 1985.5 Porsche 944 as a track car. i wanted to properly learn how to drive on the track with cheap(er), a very analog RWD, and manual transmission coupe. It already has a 1/2 cage, corbeau seats, 5pt harness, and MOMO wheel. I didn't want to continue beating on the S4.
The porsche comes in right around 2600lbs wet + driver, but only 150hp.

The lease on my 2013 S4 ends in 6 months. I am considering replacing it with the new m3 (manual) - I really miss that with my S4. The b9 s4 seems to far away to be a real contender. But I am in love with the Cayman GTS. I believe the packing is just perfect (I would not add any options to it). But still at 75k MSRP (and little to no discounts) it is at the top end of my affordability range. it also doesn't help that I have a 3yr old and the Porsche will be relegated to driving to work alone or the occasional weekend run. I am not that rich... yet (maybe in a few years I could really afford to have a fun car). Right now it is not so practical. I have never test driven one and don't plan on doing it till I am ready to buy (I am pretty sure after the test drive, Ill be ready to put my kidneys on ebay for sale).
I love the R8 as well but I don't know if I can ever justify getting a used super car. The M3 seems like the more logical progression at this point. The most practical option would be to buy out the lease on the S4 and chill out for a few years but hey we are all car guys here... if I wanted to be practical I would have gotten an A4 :)

if 75k is your ceiling than I would suggest you take a few of the US high performance cars for a spin and see if you like anything. the z28, hell cat, and gt350 are all within your price range and all have been getting some seriously stellar reviews.
I really feel like the US market for sports cars has entered in a golden age of best bang for the your $ (if you want new cars, i think $75k can get you a LOT of car in the used market and opens up some pretty serious doors)

I've thought about it. But to be clear I am of the school that the only Porsche is a 911.
I live in Denver. I previously lived in Zurich and shared a 2002 911 cabrio with my roommate there. That 996 is probably the ugliest, least respected incarnation of the 911 but we had a blast with it. Treated it more like a pick-up truck, perpetrating around in the winter with the top down and skis hanging out the back. And it was shameful how much p***y we pulled with it, even in CH where they drive their bentley's into the lake the day next model year comes out.
A few months ago I came pretty close to trading my S4 in for a ~2012 911. They depreciate so fast that you can find a steal if its even just a few years old. Living in Denver was probably a big reason why I didn't pull the trigger. People aren't that flashy here so it would really stand out (good and bad I guess), and I remember our 996 always trying to kill me in the mountains when the roads were iced.

The V8 has much better handling and balance due to the lighter engine, something to consider. As a negative, both the V8 and V10 have the known issues with carbon buildup and you WILL want to get them carbon cleaned every 30-40K miles.

i thought that the carbon build up had an extended warranty on it where they covered it in loss of power scenerios, which is about the 30-40k mark

Yea but none of those cars come into play. those are raw power muscle cars. Yea they are decent. But refined power and luxury are the best. Something that you can go for a relaxing drive in and have some fun.
Yea i under stand a real porsche is only a 911. But to get a decent 911 its going to cost around 120 or so. The Cayman GTS is far less that that or even just the S.
i think when you are buying a "supercar" everything makes it that from the interior to the exterior to the drivetrain the whole package.

All im saying is you have options. and currently i think SRT or dodge, or whatever they are calling themselves are practically giving away brand new vipers.

I own an S5 and a Cayman GTS, both are manual.
The Cayman is a fun car, but the S5 is a much better daily driver. The Cayman is fatiguing - stiff steering, stiff suspension (yes, even the PASM), and it has a lot more engine, tire, and exhaust noise than the S5. Also, it's much lower, so there's the constant fear of scraping. The relative lack of low-end torque is noticeable when compared to the S5. The Cayman also attracts a lot more unwanted attention than the S5.
The Cayman is great as an extra car for fun driving occasions, but I wouldn't use it as a daily driver. I think the S4/S5 are at the sweet spot of being not too soft and not too harsh. I can see going from the S4/S5 to the M3/M4, but the Cayman is not quite the same type of car.

Yea ive driven all of the Camaro versions except for the ZLA. I think the car in general sux. The tech is lacking and you cant see out of the car at all. The rearview mirror is to bulky which adds to blindspots. The SLP 575 Camaro is nice has tons of power but I just don't like how big the blind spots are and view out of the windshield. Its like having tunnel vision 24/7. I haven't driving a gt350 but ive driven a gt500 and that car is nice. But if I wanted to own one of them I would of bought that instead of the S4 since they are roughly the same price. Yes nice sounding V-8 the Shelby name and its an all around car on and off the track. But I wanted performance with luxary lol. (spoiled I know ) But if I want a S/C mustang I can just drive my dad's lol. 05gt with a blower on it. I don't know about owning a dodge. The dealer around me blows big donkey _____ . I have a dodge ram 5500 as a company truck and I hate having to take it there to service. Its totally well below par and ive never liked any dodge product really. Ive worked on a few and they are just head scratchers for somethings they did when they built the car. Not fun to work on. Now with Fiat taking over things into the future might change. Somethings have already changed. But I don't have a friendly dealer near me at all. I think like 30 miles to the closest decent one.
When I do buy something that is a "rare" car im not going to drive it everyday. It will get tucked away for the winter. But yea its a must to drive some of these cars before I consider buying one. Just kinda around me where I live, the R8 would be more of a WOW factor than a Porsche. Unless it was a gt Porsche model. But im not a baller for that kind of money unless I win the lottery or find gold coins in my back yard lol.

Glad we are in agreement with the 911, but to be clear it's not a supercar, even if it costs 120k and you put it in quotes. The "supercar" porsche is what, the Spyder? You can get a very nice used 991 for 80k.

But im not a baller for that kind of money unless I win the lottery or find gold coins in my back yard lol.
have you looked at any of the newer 2 seater jags?
there is a guy at work who has a burnt orange with black interior F type and that thing is flat out stunning.

I would probably go to an RS7 before I'd go to a Porsche.
Its a great big huge car. I've never understood the huge car/truck with huge motor category. Small car big motor i understand.

THATS a great car and a great idea. I wish I had done that when i was younger. Very reliable, repairable and fun.

The thread name caught my attention first time poster thinking about getting into a 2015 Audi S4. Right now have a Porsche 2012 Cayman R as a DD and after 3 years it has just lost its appeal. I test drove a an S4 yesterday and was impressed. My car is being sold on Tuesday next week if the PPI works out for the buyer, should be no issues. If it sells I am going to place a custom order for a loaded S4. Don't get me wrong the CR is fun to drive but the suspension is so stiff and you feel every crack in the road. I miss having a back seat and getting and out of the Sports Bucket seats is a task. Now that the weather is getting cold the tires do not heat up very well and it feels like you are driving the flinstone mobile. My other car is a 2011 Porsche Cayenne V6 and I have been driving that more. I have only driven the CR one time in the past month. The S4 seems like I can have fun with it because it is not a big car, has power and handles well.

Well... just the opposite by purchasing a B8 S4. After 11 years, I was ready for a more modern sports car, unlike the older 911.[:D] So is that considered a downgrade then? I think not! I love both cars for what they are and enjoy the best of both worlds now. Major S4 selling point was the ability to pack my entire family in there and take long trips.
Cayman's are fantastic btw, very well balanced cars. I see more and more track guys making the Cayman switch because of this. Only problem I see with 'em... no back seats. :) If you're serious about a Cayman, for only a few grand more you can easily step into a decent 996TT. These cars are under valued right now and in another performane league from the Cayman.
Cheers

Well i think any of the GTx porsches are supercars. Well if your considering that 918 spyder a supercar than yea the 911 are nothing but i think those are only true super cars to the rich and famous lol. But to us mere mortals a decent 911 or an R8 or base lambo int in that category as well.
Yea the old 911's are neat but have 0 appeal to me. Not my generation taste i guess. But to some people they love them. To each their own. Yea the 2 seater jags do look nice now. but i dunno how i fell about them. I know when ford owned them they were nothing but a different body lincoln nothing fancy about the drivetrain. It was just all Ford engines except for the one v8 but the lincoln LS and the older F type shared that engine and it wasn't nothing great. I dunno i guess i would have to sit in one and take it for a ride to see how i feel. I know if i want a cabi I would deff get a TT I drove a first gen TT 225hp with quattro and that car was a blast to drive with 6pd and all.

West is special. We miss him here. He's the trolliest of Trolls but I find him terribly entertaining. I'm reasonably sure he's still hosting on AR.

The Porsche is a whole different level of engineering than an MB/BMW/Audi. The delta between a PDK and a DSG is like the delta between a DSG and an older Tiptronic. If you tick off every option you can build a $100k Cayman. If you take $5k of options you'll also be extremely happy with what you got. Even the "convertible" isn't a bad option. If you want a fast Porsche (turbo or 4 liter) it's going to cost you double. Then again, S4 people might pay $60k where an A4 buyer paid $35k. If you like road feel, Porsche has the best electric steering in the business.
