I'm planning to change the oem-grill to a aftermarket black optic rs7 grill. I first thougt blacking out the window trim with vinyl ist the way to go to make the rest fit to the grill, but after a first test i think that it will not satisfy me.

Anyone already used plasti-dip for it? How lasting will it be and does it harm the trim?

Thanks a lot in advance.

The best way to black it out is with factory black trim but it is CRAZY expensive.

Plasti dip is good for some things, but there are challenges to using it on that trim. To make it right, it has to go all the way under with the doors open. It will be an intensive masking/shielding job to keep from spraying it inside the car, but it is possible. It will have some texture to it as well and IMO the glossifier will not be able to make it as glossy as the trim on the grill. And, if you decide to take it off, it may not come off too easy from the underside with all the ridges on it. Key to making it easy to peel is to put plenty of coats, 5 or 6.

I went with the vinyl wrap and it looks great. Some flaws due to issues with the installer. It was raining the day he put it on and he didn't know that it was wet under there and it didn't stick right everywhere. Key is to get a good product, not that cheap Shadowline stuff or poor equivalent and get someone with experience to put it on

I just got mine done and it looks perfect. Again don't use the cheap stuff and get it professionally done. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/10/2db3c09a790af8d39ad439bb51ad14e5.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/10/dafdcd5a233c33d6f0681c375a022b8d.jpg

There is this video which shows how to do the trim for a Tesla. The trim and window design looks pretty similar to the A7. It's a helluva taping job as Dennis mentioned.

For what it is worth, I too plan on going to a pro to have my trim vinyl wrapped to black. I think that is the best way to go if done right.

What's the general price range for the wrap?

I got my window trim wrapped in gloss black vinyl. I think it cost me about $250. It looks great.

I ordered the black optics grill from OEM Plus.

The best way to black it out is with factory black trim but it is CRAZY expensive.

This is what I wanted to do with my order. I have the extended carbon package (mirrors are body color), and the only surface that is "up in the air" is the window trim. On my Quartz Gray A7, the aluminum window trim looks quite good. But on my RS7 matte Daytona, I would expect less so. But when ordering, my dealer could not locate an option for black, carbon, or body color window trim, and (said) he could get no clarity from factory. (Why is this part of ordering so damn hard?) So, depending on what is there when the cover comes off, I plan to either love what is there, or have it professionally wrapped or painted.

I paid $300 for the gloss black window trim. Additionally I paid $150 for my front grille chrome trim be gloss black - it's now spectacular. I initially thought it was expensive, but it's a hell of a lot of work. I'm very happy with the results.

$250-$300 actually seems pretty reasonable for a job like that. Now I'm thinking......

Pale Rider, you should be fine. The carbon optic package for the previous years included black window and grille trim with the RS7.

OEM Plus sells the Audi black optics window trim pieces, but they run about $800 before shipping. Shipping is oversized boxes, so that's about $250 additional.
Then you have to install them.

Far more cost effective to just get vinyl wrap on the trim. $250 and it's done, plus you can peel it off it unhappy with the look or want to go back to stock.

Just to be clear, that price is for matte black trim. Gloss black is WAY more. 1550 plus shipping, more like 1800. Then labor to install. Rivets have to be drilled, and possibly rear window glass removed, (it came up but I forgot what we concluded)

Wrap looks good if done right, and as you say, it can be removed easily

with our cars the upper trim is attached to the body and wraps under into the car, all polished. THe door has a rubber seal that lays on the trim. If you do our cars like that, the trim will have a visible line with polished going into the car when the door is open. It will look ok with the door closed, but half assed when you open the door. To do it right you would have to have the door open, and spray the underside too, which would require a drop cloth curtain to keep the spray out of the car. Do-able, but not easy.

The A7 is actually a little different. There is a rubber seal that the window slides in and out of when you open and close the door, so the chrome trim does not wrap all the way under. The upper part of the doors on the 7 are frameless.

I tested a bit yesterday. The rubber ist noch Problem, i prepped right everything is fine. But the dipped result over all is not really satisfying. Especially around the rear view mirror it is very hard to get good and even layers of dip.

I decided to take it of again and Stick with a rs grill with chrome surrounding.

Any pictures of around the rear view mirror before you took it off? I'm just curious how bad it looked.

Unfortunatly not, it was way to thick at the bottom of the trim, all in all it wasn't that bad, i would say 95% perfekt, but i'm aiming for 100%.

Got an offer for a wrap today: 400-500 € for just the trim. It will be cheaper for me to buy a chromed grill.

By the way: complete wrap would ne around 1,5k....thinking about matte grey ^^
