Surprisingly I did not see this discussed much in a search.
Skip the Audi standard document for recommended oil manufacturers for now.
Just curious about weight only.
Typically Audi recommends their VW 502 00 spec 5w-40 oil but almost every online guide recommends 5w-30 for the S6. In the engine bay the sticker says VW 502 00. Looking in the manual is even more confusing since they recommend VW 502 00 or VW 504 00.
I would suspect it is 502 as 504 tends to mostly be a diesel spec, but you can get 502 oils in both 5w-40 and 5w-30.
Which weight is right?

I use Mobil 1 0W-40. It outperforms 0W-30 or 5W-30 in all temperatures. It's also VW 502.00 rated.

I would only use 5w-40 or 0w-40. There is enough of those two weights certified out there. Then again, it tops 120 where I'm at in the summer. Also, on the labels note the difference between VW 502.00 certified and formulated to meet or for VW 502 00. Somewhere this is an Audi oil chart for their certified oils. I use to have a link, maybe someone will read this who knows where it is and post. [;)]

I think the dealer used Castrol 5W-40 in mine. I'm not fond of Castrol, but untill the warantee is up I'll endulge them. After that, its Redline like in my A4 2.0 TFSI. I prefer to run true synthetic oil, not dino oils some lawyer says is synthetic. Redline is formulated to be used in VW 502.00 but not certified.

FWIW I got the dealer info off the 5k service paperwork.
They use Castrol Edge Professional EO 5w-40
