Hey guys. Just picked up a clean 1997 a4 quattro 1.8t sitting on newer ( couple month old )st coils. Has a apr chip as well. Downside. Motor is knocking bad. Got it for super super cheap. Was wondering which motors all fit in this thing. Want to stay 1.8t as i have the exact same thing but 2.8 already. This is more of a project. Also would like to know some basic mods for the 1.8t as well. Thanks in advance

well thats a vague question. the options are limitless, it all really depends on how deep your pockets are! whats your budget is the 1st question you need to answer

Im looking to spend about $3-5k after all is said and done. I have owned rwd nissans up until now. Was looking to keeping it a 1.8t just to leave some more cash to put it into the motor. But am open to things that are easily swapped in. Saw some rwd threads and love the idea since i have an awd daily

If you have that amount of money to spend why not just rebuild the 1.8t motor that is in it?

It has a horrid knock. Barely turns over. I just picked it up. Going to take it apart and see how bad it really is. I found a few 1.8's for cheap in my area. Was curious as to what year 1.8's fit. New to audizine so im trying to get a hang of navigating thru all the threads.

yeah, just throw some rods in, pick up used parts over a few months, and you will easily get to 300awhp with 5k, maybe up to 400awhp.

Don't go RWD either. The tires just spin since a lot of the weight is in front of the front wheels

Ya im trying to kick the rwd habit. I am going to look into a rebuild. Hopefully not much damage has occured. The previous owner didnt seem to know much about the car and was young. From what he said car was ok, then he chipped it and ran into issues not long after doing so.

Maybe just look for a built motor locally? They usually go for $1500 or so with rods installed.

Ya i have yet to find a built motor locally. Found a few online with the usual money back gurantees and what not. I just need to see what all drops in with little to no modifications. Current engine code is aeb. The manual trans is ok from what i can tell. So a motor that would drop in and bolt up would be nice.

$1400 plus shipping. Willing to bet you could get this to your door for $1300 if you haggle with him

I should mention that is a stroker motor, so it is 2.0, not 1.8. I would ask the guy what has been done to the intermediate shaft too.
