I have try'd to search but haven't found what I'm looking for. I'm wondering if anyone has built a b5 tdi Quattro? I've seen were people have try'd but gave up or what not, I haven't seen a built one I know in Europe they made them but I have been thinking about it since I know a guy who built a tdi ranger. If it has been done can you send me a link to the build thanks

If you're talking about swapping in a TDI motor it's definitely been done before, there's even a guy in Ontario that imports drivetrains from europe to swap in and sells the car afterwards for a hefty premium. Your best bet would probably be to find a totalled passat tdi (rare but they do exist) and grab the motor out of that. The biggest hurdle is AWD since tdi passats only came in fwd, but you'd probably be able to transplant the tdi guts into an awd transmission.

Why not just import one from Europe? Here in Manitoba there's a few guys bringing over c5 a6 2.5 TDI and some b5 a4 tdis they sell for 7-8k inspected ready to go.

so I guess you would need to find a 98-05 passat tdi[confused]

Negatory. TDI passats were only imported in the B5 chassis in 1997 (incredibly rare) and also in a couple of the later 2000's years, I think 2004 and 2005, but not positive on that one.

I remember earlier this year or last year, Scotty at Advanced Automotion had a b5 tdi he was parting out.

My plan is to source a tdi motor and mate it to a 5 speed quattro I know a guy with a few tdi blocks and I have a 5 speed tranny in the back of my truck so was gonna play around and see what will mate the best (with least cost) then buy a donor car and do the project. I would like to keep my 1.8t in my a4 so I would buy another a4 prob blown motor and a tdi car

the problem with the swap is sourcing a tdi transmission. the gears in a petrol transmission are wayyyyyy off. it defeats the purpose of the diesel engine and kills gas mileage because it will rev way to high

I mistyped, I meant 98 Passat tdi's are rare. the 04-05's are not.

From the info I have found, there all of 2, yes two, 98 Passat tdi's imported to the united states. Some guy local to me bought one of them and has a compound turbo setup on his.

wonder what it would take(computer, cluster, and ????) to get an 04-05 to work on our cars[confused]

Not a whole lot, the B5.5 passat is basically identical to a b5 a4 from the firewall forward. If you get the engine harness and ecu everything should swap right in with a bit of wiring work.

I'm guessing the hardest part would be the whole transmission issue, and of course you'd want to retain Quattro. If you had a hookup across the ocean for parts, it could be done. It would tickle me pink to own two swapped b5's- a vr6t and a tdi. I would be a very happy guy if that were to happen.

if I could find a smacked up b5.5 tdi manual id swap it into a FrontTrak audi b5. BOOM! transmission issue resolved lol.

I don't understand the logic behind putting a TDI motor into an old B5. First thought is, are you really that broke that you need to save on gas costs? But then, if you can afford a swap, why are you worried about the first part unless you are just crazy and bored?

What's the point of a v8 swap? What's the point of a euro bumper? What's the point of new reemz?

A tdi swap would simply be cool and unique.

V8 Swap=different powerband/increase in HP
Euro bumper/wheels= Aesthetics
TDI Swap= Gas savings? parts difficult to source?

TDI's can have power too- http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=410054

Any points for uniqueness too? I've always said I am an OEM kind of guy, and this definitely falls under that category.

I guy I work with has a 05 passat tdi wagon 5speed that's wat gave me the idea. The passat tdi wagon is only auto in North America, he bought a tranny and ecu from Europe 650 he sayd to his door. That's whats triggered my tdi Quattro idea. Now the transmission is the problem I suppose it could be bought over seas but I wonder if you had a longitude tdi tranny and a 1.8t tranny or 2.8 tranny and swapped shafts gears and synchro if that would work at all? Just a thought

I have found a guy that has imported tdi 4motion passats into canada. The cars are apparently whole cars with the roofs cut off, he is selling whole cars so I'm told. That I think would be the cheapest and easiest route. I believe there 04-05 but not 100% sure

now that you say that, I dont see a point in swapping over to a TDI either, besides the fact to be different..lol...the 1.8t is much more capable of an engine anyway

I don't think you guys get it. Just because you can afford to pay 5 mpgs doesn't mean you don't want 50. And if you pay Xxxx's moneys to get there, who cares? Some people pay 10k to get to 500awhp, so what if someone wants to pay 10k to get to 50 mpgs? Its a difference in opinion and if you aren't willing to admit that, GTFO.

I want it for uniqueness the mpg is a bonus I would just buy a jetta if I wanted fuel milage. I still might buy a mk4 tdi to drive tho just has to be under 500 bucks for me to buy or mint shape

moped/scooter(100+ mpg's) in the summer and dry days, prius(50+ mpg's) in the winter and rainy days: MPG WIN[drive]

just remember, just because something is different, doesnt mean its cool or worthwhile.

Hah, have you seen the market for mk4 tdis? For less than 1.5k you'll get one with half a million km, torn up interior and rust holes all over the body.

I don't really care milage but I have found a bunch for 800 to 2000 with km from 200000 to 600000. I work with a guy who has 730km on his tdi 2002 jetta same motor and trany never had a problem and another guy I work with has 360km on his same thing no problem. Rusty body well that's a down side but owell
