View Full Version : So my car was stolen

Long story short some asshole stole my car while I ran in my house for seriously 1 minute.
Just got the car back today and the guy has been using the car all week. The car is fine for the most part besides the interior.
A good detail hopefully should take care of everything.
That's not my concern. He still has my keys to the car. Audi wants $1375 to re-key the car, that's new locks in the doors and ignition.
Is there any other option I can do so he can't take the car? Or do i need to just man up and pay that. Insurance blows and wont cover new locks but I'm going to have a good talk tomorrow with them to try to get them to pay for it. I have full coverage I don't understand why they wont.

Post an armed guard that will shoot the asshole when he comes back to the car. Otherwise, nope.

not really.....Well yes...
Another option. have the immobilizer defeated in your ECU, and swap everything....literally everything to another car. So find a parts car, take the drivers door latch teh trunk latch the gleobox door, the ignition, literally everything. its gonna be a pain in the dick. Honestly i would just sell it. Install a kill switch temporarily, He would be an idiot to steal it twice.

i would definitely let him steal it again.... set up a trap so you are alerted, and can get there in time. and this time i would shoot him when he was on my property. nothing fatal, but a permanent reminder that i tagged him back

I prefer shooting him too.
He was parking it in front of this women's house every morning and she called the police for a suspicious vehicle.
The police are doing a stake out in the area to watch and see if he comes back to get the car and try to arrest him.

find a way to trap him in there once he gets in. lol. all the doors are electric... install a remote kill switch.
on the surrius doe - get lowjack maybe? or a cheaper, simpler GPS device linked to an app, to throw in the spare tire well?
Better question....why did they give you your car back?
Bad cop:
Old lady informs police that car is found.
police return car without seeing the perp.....
perp is never caught
Good Cop:
old lady informs police that car is found
Cop informs you car is found but that it is being staked out to see if the perp returns.
Perp returns gets in car, police surround him, he is bonered
you get your car back, thief pays for your new locks and goes to jail.
Alex is one happy man and goes out to get beers with Martin

hahaha I asked that.
They said they would've left it there and waited but if the cops got another call they would have to leave and get that call and then he could take the car and my car is gone again.
Priorities.
My car is at the dealership now so its not too pressing.
My advice...
Buy a new car and don't leave it running in the driveway with a STEAL ME! sign on it

ha I know I've learned my lesson I've lost a lot and spent a lot so far. I live in an awesome neighborhood getting my car stolen was the very last thing on my mind.

Yeah, I was just joking around.
I've done it too to warm up the car, when the weather gets nasty around here. Just had a little more luck than you.
I think I am going to learn from your incident, and either buy a remote starter or sit in the car to warm it up.

Da heck?!
Just buy a couple new keys and have the Immo reprogrammed to those keys. The key he has will open the door but as soon as he tries to start it the alarm will go off. And install a LOUDER alarm horn /siren.
When you adapt any additional / new key to the car "ALL" of the old keys must be matched at the same time or they will no longer work. Another option would be to ONLY re-key the ignition and get new keys and disable the door/trunk key hole however you want- delete, fubar, or whatever. I mean...when was the last time you used the key in the door? That way = cheaper and he can't get in with the key.

Why you get a new key, and want to program it, the dealer asks for all the keys.... So if you were to get a new key, and get it programmed wouldn't the old (the one the thief has) one no longer work?!?

Sad to hear. One way I utilize my turbo timer. Set to my 9:50 setting, take key out ignition, shut door, lock car, run into wherever I want, come back, car still running, still there, unlock car, hop in, key in ignition, turbo timer off, and me on my merry way. Also great for letting the car warm up (I have an expensive turbo and let my car warm up before driving, despite it not being ideal). Truthfully can look like a bait car if someone were to come up and pull the handle just to see it locked.

hmm that's not a bad idea. Option A.. Would the key-less entry work or will that be disabled also? So the only way he could get in is use the key physically (if he's smart enough). Once he tries to start the car the alarm will go off. If I'm fast enough I would be able to out there and jack him up.

Like it was said above. [wrench] a kill switch and a alarm that will alert you on your phone[eek]. The jackass will be cranking and not start if he comes back for it. You either shoot him or [headbang] to death and you have your key back[up]

The only think that would work on the old key is the physical means of opening the door. See the plastic key, that can still unlock your trunk. So access to the car is still possible, but actually driving it is not. And if you lock the car, and it's physically unlocked the alarm should sound (kinda like if you lock the car while you are inside, and then open the door).

That's awesome! I'll do that, make sure i have nothing in my car (he already took everything). Then i just remembered, I have APR. Security lockout on the flash.

Hate to thread jack/derail on a serious thread with a terrible situation that nobody should have to go through in life (pardon OP), but I would rather let my engine fluids get up to temp (really just coolant, as oil will be right behind once driving short distance) than spend money on rebuilding or getting a replacement turbo if she blows. I blew a couple before (Garret BB), and it's not necessarily a cheap fix.

Wow. I'm not trying to make fun of the scenario but that guy stole your car like a BOSS. always turn off the car an lock it no matter what.

on a BUILT engine?
you are harming the turbo more by doing that.
idling to wam up is the worst idea even on a stock car, but on a built car its one of the top 10 DON'T DO's.
think about it, cold motor, pistons haven't expanded, you are firing the richest mixture during cold start, you are getting tons of blowby, and extremely rich blow by, tons of fuel into your oil system, its wiping the oil clean on your bearings in your engine, on your turbo, in the head. Everywhere.....running a turbo on cold oil isn't bad, running a turbo at full capacity on cold oil sure is, but driving to warm up the engine won't kill your turbo. Idling for warmup on a built engine... That's Turrible.....

My thoughts. Do you live right downtown or something, or in a suburban neighborhood? If the latter, I think it's pretty weird that someone just happened to be that close to your home/car while you ran inside. Guy probably lives in your neighborhood.
What I would do is buy cameras for in front of your house, and affix a GPS tracker to the car. Leave it parked on the street so it would be more tempting for him to steal.
Once it's stolen you can trace his location (with police assistance) and find who it is- especially likely since he was driving it everyday, not just joyriding it. Honestly, insurance is there for you if it gets stolen, I'd be more interested in putting the scumbag behind bars.

I'm in a suburban neighborhood. I think he could possibly live near by.
He was watching my car for a few days. I saw the dude a week before it was stolen eying my car. I know what he looks like, one of those want to be gangster white guys. So if i do see him he's going to have broken bones.
I'm just going to keep an eye out. Reprogram the keys so the car wont start and hopefully the alarm goes off if he tries so I can get out there and do work.

I don't understand why they wont. (insurance pay out)
Because it's your fault that it got stolen, because you left the keys in it. But the guy sounds pretty determined, and when there's a will, there's a way. So who knows, maybe he would've found other ways to steal it.

Yea? That makes no sense. So if it my fault i rear end someone and total my car insurance would pay me for a new car, not me. Whats the difference here?
Paying for new locks would prevent any future break ins (or walk ins in my case) or another stolen car.

What is insurance? it is not there to protect you for the moments you expect. I can tell ya that much. Its there for unexpected accidents.
So what happened here? Alex left his car for 2 seconds, and it was stolen, that is an accident. Unforeseeable, unexpected, shouldn't have happened, but it did.
Alex another option you could do is keep the keys, Immo delete the ECU, I can help you with this, and swap the ignition switch. So he would be able to get into the car, but he wouldn't be able to drive it.
There is also the opposite selection, replace the trunk and driver lock cylinders with a new key and keep the ignition key so he can't get in unless he breaks a window.

You might look into a 2 way alarm. That way you'll be notified when someone open the door.

I was also thinking about that. Would the alarm turn off though if the car is unlocked?
Or is that a separate deal between the factory alarm and the aftermarket alarm.
