View Full Version : Door lock cylinder issue

Both of my keys slide halfway into the driver's door lock and hit a hard stop. I tried them in the trunk lid lock and they work fine. I peered into the driver's door lock and I don't see any debris. Tried squirting a little grease in and that didn't help. I didn't want to push too hard and break something. I also could see two teeth inside the lock cylinder that would appear to ride in the slots on the key. One of them moves up and springs back. The other one doesn't move at all... not sure if it is supposed to or not.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is my lock cylinder seized or something? Should I keep working at it unless I can free up the other tooth? Is there anything I can do w/ the lock cylinder removed? I did find this video, which looks helpful for removing the lock cylinder.

There is no record in the service history of the keys being replaced, and it would seem odd for them to have done that and replaced all the lock cylinders EXCEPT the driver's door. Any help is appreciated.

This is as far as it goes.

Well, I finally got it. There are 3 or 4 teeth on each side of the inside of the lock cylinder. These teeth ride in the slots on either side of the key and spring up and down. At least half of mine were seized. After picking and prying for a while and squirting plenty of PB blaster in the cylinder, I got most of the teeth loose. Then, following the DIY video in the OP, I took the lock cylinder out and got the last 1-2 unstuck from the back. Soaked the whole cylinder in PB blaster for a while just for good measure, doused it w/ throttle body cleaner, dried it off, then greased and oiled the heck out of it. Works perfectly now! [:D]

Anyone else who needs to do this, just take the lock cylinder out of the door first. Nothing will fall down inside the door when you remove it, so don't worry about that. You can then carefully unclip the body color painted piece from the lock cylinder once it is removed from the door and proceed to work on it.
