I was a bit disappointed that the 2014 RS 5s did not have the carbon fiber insert on the engine cover and even sadder after finding out that it is now available on the 2015 so I had it hydro dipped. Some of you may find this to be ricey or ghetto, but I'm not a big baller like some of you out there and think it looks great for $200 as opposed to $800 for the real deal. If it was an exterior piece that would be seen every day, then I would have gone with real CF. What do you guys think?

Yes, met him through a Subaru meet. He's in North Texas. http://www.rangerhydrographix.com/
Does a lot of in-house work for Subaru of Plano.

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm hoping it holds up to engine heat. The hydro dipper said he applied several coats of clear so it is rock hard and is confident it will be just fine. He did all the work of separating the center piece from the border piece with the runner channels as well as removing the emblems. He plastic welded it all back together and reapplied the emblems for me. I still haven't installed it back on the car yet. Only laid it on top of the motor for pictures. He said to wait until the weekend to ensure that it is 100% cured. I have it sitting on my fireplace mantle right now and it looks damn nice there!

Looks fantastic, you just need a coolant cap to match that R8 oil cap and the engine bay is complete.

As far as I can tell, the R8 coolant cap doesn't fit. :(
I think the Porsche one might.

edit: Just saw shonseb's build thread and confirmed that the Porsche 991 coolant cap fits so order placed via ECS Tuning.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrographics_(printing)

Ever worked on plastic model kits with those decals that you need to soak in water and then apply with tweezers? Kind of the same thing but much bigger scale and the entire piece is dunked into a tank with the graphic floating on the water surface.

Post #6 has the vendor info. I don't think this is something that is a group buy applicable though as it is pretty labor intensive and he is a one man operation. It was a 2 week turnaround time for me and I live like 10 minutes from him so no shipping was involved.

So you pop open you hood, and those around you knowing that cover is plastic and you have it covered in fake carbon wont raise and eyebrow??? A dick comment said, that motor , differences in drivetrain, and over all factory body add ons isn't enough??? The car speaks for itself... To each his own I guess.

Based on your theory, we should just leave everything stock? Thanks for the opinion though (no sarcasm). I did this for myself and like I said in my original post, I would have gotten real CF if it was on the exterior.

Shit, guess iam not entitled to an opinion on a public forum... Well if you going to call someone out and not even spell asshole out, then this fake hydro dip is for you too. My comment was more of a compliment. The rs5 is quite a car for those that get it, most really don't... To add adornments to it I feel is distasteful. If the real carbon one rolls around and I had to pull the trigger on something the OEM piece would be it.
