let's see your installs and hardwired power sources.
i'm gonna pull the trigger soon. any recommended/non-recommended cameras? i'm leaning towards the b40/a118.
i don't have any particular needs, but i would like it to just work. i'm using it strictly for traffic incidents only and will likely set it and forget it until something happens.

I have the BlackVue DR550GW-2CH. Front camera installed right in front of the rearview mirror. Rear camera installed at top of rear windshield. Hardwired with PowerMagic Pro inside the passenger side of the dash, into the fuse box. Camera runs while car is on or parked, but shuts down if the car's battery voltage drops below 11.8 Volts.

I see that you have the cord for the 9500ci or stir plus cord too. Smart man!

how'd you run the wire from behind the mirror to the fusebox? i'm not averse to a going straight to the box by tucking into the headliner, but didn't want to mess with the pillar. isn't there an airbag in there?

Yes there is an airbag in there. I would recommend just removing the a pillar which is pretty easy. The first time it is scary and difficult. If it makes you feel better disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery may be smart. Then just tuck it next to the sunroof water drain which is also in there next to the airbag. Haha. Then just next to the dash then into the fusebox. Any questions just respond or pm me.

If I ordered a 650, could I simply plug-n-play with the wiring for my 550?

Ok yes I have almost the same setup. I have a stir plus with a mirror that I did and a anti laser priority. :)
Great system. I also have 2 dash cams the blackvue dr500gw. Same thing but just bought 2 instead of the one package like you did.

Did you do the install yourself? If so great work! I like the custom panel! I did one too and then removed it. The s4 ashtray isn't as big as the s6.

Do you have the rear sun shade by chance? I'm really curious if there's any clearance issues?

No rear shade in my car.
Darn. Do you have any pictures of the rear camera install anyways? I'm seriously interested in getting a BlackVue setup -- as long as there aren't any obstructions.
Thanks

Are dashcams more specific than just mounting up a GoPro?

I think go pros are awesome. I've used them before and I know that some people will try to turn them into a dash cam with some success.
In my opinion and what I'm looking for is a dash cam that is hard-wired to your vehicle and specifically has features for the video and recording management where it gracefully handles the disk management without much, if any, user input. The dash cams that I'm looking at are more designed to be a bit more discreet and designed better than a go-pro in terms of the forward and rear racing camera -- to be more inline with the contours of the vehicle. Again, if you don't care about those features that true dash cam is designed with, then sure, you can use a go-pro to be a dash cam.

Im paying attention to this thread because Im interested in this now and didnt realize there were cameras dedicated to being dashcams. Anyone have models they would recommend? I have no clue where to begin.

The rear camera is so small, and mounted so high in my rear windshield that there is no way I can take a picture of it from inside. And my rear windshield is tinted with 15% film, so there is no way to take a picture from outside either.
The BlackVue has been fantastic for me. Absolutely no complaints.

Yes, dash cams are more specific than a GoPro. The BlackVue has a GPS built in that tracks your speed and location, and tags it to the video. The camera also has a shock sensor and a motion sensor which also tag the videos. The model I have came with 2 camera, one front and one rear. It also has a constant power supply to allow the camera to continue recording while the car is parked. That way if you get vandalized or a hit-n-run you'll still have video evidence. The power system is smart, so it will shut down before killing the car battery.

I have the 550 2 channel and I opted to mount mine to the right of my rearview mirror. I first had it right behind the rear view in the middle (well technically in front of if you are looking out from the driver's seat) but it looked awful from the outside. Just way too obvious. From where I have it mounted now, you can still see it easily but its not as gaudy looking I guess would be the best way to describe it. The rear camera is mounted in the top middle and can be seen from my rear view mirror. Unfortunately there is no other stealthy way to install these cameras. I am sure in the future there will be much smaller units available. I can say that the video quality is superb and I have zero complaints about the usability and the quality of the unit. The app works well and the wifi allows you to even view live feed.
Here are pics of my setup:

I too have the power magic pro and i feel its a necessity. The blackvue has a parking mode and needs power to keep recording. It even has motion as well as impact sensors that even allow you to adjust the sensitivity.
