Recently my car started making this god awful scrapeing/rattling noise but only when the car is cold and only the first ~10 seconds of startup. It is definitely coming from the rear end, muffler is older but there is no obviously signs of failure.

I listened to it PB. To tell the truth, all I could hear was wind noise from the phone being held out the window.

I know the video sucks, I'll try to get a better one soon. You can hear the scrapping though before and after the wind takes over

New video where you can actually sort of hear it! Also edited the first post with it

PB really can't hear it. You can tell way more than we can. Front or back? Left or right? Does the frequency change with the speed of the wheels? Does it go away when you throw it into neutral? Does it go away when you hit the brakes? Does speed matter? Does it go away or appear when under power or when you let off the gas?

My car used to make a noise kind of similar to this some two years ago, I think it was one of the pulley/tensioner but don't know which one as I have changed everything at once and then the noise went away. I believe it was the power steering pulley..

You sure you watched the new video? You can hear it a couple good times. It's definitely behind the engine, it's behind me for sure. Left side, which made me think resonator or muffler but they look alright (though they are 10 years old)

I hear something, sounds like a lose baffle in a muffler. But I can't hear it well enough to tell.

Does it make the noise when you rev the car cold just sitting there ?

Or if you put it in gear, then put your foot on the brake and give it gas. PB you need to answer these kind of questions instead of just holding your phone out the window.

My guess is it's a loose heatshield or something else rattling since it seems to only happen at a specific rpm. Get underneath and shake things until you find it.

I let it idle 3-4 minutes before revving it to see if the heat might make it go away, no luck. When revved (cold) it happens between 2-2400rpm. When revved warm it doesn't do it. It does not do it below 2k even when driving. Outside of 2nd gear it doesn't happen. Not sure if related or not but lately my car has stalled on the first cold start but then after that it's fine (idle is a bit high though at 1,200. Could be CTS or something). I got under the car earlier and shook the muffle and piping and heard nothing. I haven't checked heatshield yet, though if it was a heatshield wouldn't it happen no matter the gear?

Probably right. Do you feel a vibration at all? When those drive shafts get a bad CV joint or center bearing, they will vibrate in second gear at a certain RPM...though I'm not used to people saying it makes a noise. Come to think of it, is the heat shield that covers the drive shaft in good shape?

No vibrating that I've noticed. Come to think of it though the sounds does kinda sound like metal on metal contact where one surface is spinning (like a driveshaft or wheel). I'll check around the driveshaft tomorrow
