Hi Everyone,

A couple years ago I bought a '99.5 A4 1.8T Quattro with a 5-speed manual. It's the good 'ol brilliant yellow [:D] with onyx black interior. I'm sure I'll get some comments on the color. I honestly didn't think much of it when I bought it but it has definitely grown on me and I really like it now. I brought it back from LA and have had it in both IL and MI. Its still never seen salt or snow and has always been garaged kept. Before me it was owned by the original owner who was a girl, so its never been driven hard. I love this car, handles like a dream!

That car looks real clean.

How is your drivers seat not torn? How many miles are on it?

Thanks! Just turned over to 128k yesterday. I think the fact a girl owned it (light weight) for over a decade plus it being leatherette is why its not torn. It does have a slight crack on the left panel (on the top of the seat surface) that is almost unnoticeable and doesn't seem to get worse so I haven't bothered to fix it. In fact, its so unoticable I don't even think you can see it in this photo.

I like that.

There's one [brilliant yellow] for sale semi-locally that I like. Not that I could buy it though.

That's a great car, is the paint as good as it looks in the pictures?

+10 points for the clean engine bay. A new coolant tank would do it wonders though (and ditching the red vacuum line for black.) :)

The only thing I would change right away in the interior would be the pedal covers, otherwise it looks super nice!

Thanks guys! Yes, paint is pretty darn good. The yellow does do an excellent job of hiding scratches, so there are a some scratches in the clear coat (but not into the paint) but unless you are waxing it you never see them. Only other problem is rock chips on the drivers side of the bumper. Why are these cars rockchip magnets? Its like the paint on the bumpers are weak or something. Is the coolant tank discolored or something? I'm not sure what they're supposed to look like as this is my first Audi. Not sure why the vacuum line is red, that's the way I bought it. Whats wrong with my favorite pedal covers [:D] They are Sparco. I didn't even have to instal them. The asian girl who owned it before did. Now why would an asian girl want a five-speed Audi and put pedal covers on it???

Welcome! I love the color, only thing that bothered me was it fades in bright sunlight. Plus one for the awesome foot peddles, and new tanks are white, no big deal, but it does clean up the bay.

Guys, I got a quick question. I'm in the middle of tracking down an A/C leak. I have a hissing noise coming from up toward where the lines go into the firewall in that picture. What parts should I be checking for leaks?

I'm pretty sure a hissing noise is normal after your turn the car off with A/C on. Both of my B5's do it.

To find a leak, you could either use a UV dye that's put into your A/C system, or use a spray bottle with a little soap and water

Welcome to the Brilliant Yellow club, and be prepared for a few members to be jealous of the color, haha. Car looks to be in excellent condition, wish mine still was. Over the 5yrs Ive owned mine, the paint has faded and clear coat cracked on the rear bumper, roof and both front and rear pillars.

Really? I thought I had found it [confused] I found that if I put my hand over the line on the left it would hush the leaking sound. It seemed to be on the bottom of the line.

I went to Autozone to get dye and the guy said that if I can hush it by putting my hand on the line he is almost 100% sure I have a pin hole crack in that line. I was just going to replace that line. What do you think?

Yeah, I'm not sure. Maybe both of my B5s are broken, not a surprise. lol

If it was me, I'd try spraying some water soap on there just for a visual verification. The only place I would think to find that line would be a PnP or the dealer.

Can anyone else confirm that they have a hissing sound up there after shut down?

I probably will try that, but I hate to since I'll probably have to put a can of 134r in before I can even try it. If I leave the compressor on for maybe 30 seconds or so it starts making a grinding sound so I think it is almost out of refrigerant. Because of that I'm hesitant to turn it back on without adding more 134r.

If you have to add more refrigerant anyway, I would just add the dye instead and see if you can find any leaks. Also, it sounds like you know what you are doing, but, don't just throw in more refrigerant with one of those "AC Pro" bottles... it's basically one of those quick fix in a bottle you can find for coolant leaks, etc.

Oh, really? Maybe I don't know what I am doing [:|] I didn't buy the AC Pro, but I got this:
http://www.interdynamics-europe.co.uk/ourproducts/product.php?id=74

Then I got a can of something similar to this but it had leak stop too: http://www.amazon.com/Interdynamics-334-R-134a-Refrigerant-Dye/dp/B008QDWGN2/ref=sr_1_6?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1406728750&sr=1-6&keywords=interdynamics+dye

I also have this UV light: http://www.amazon.com/Interdynamics-438-True-Light-Glasses/dp/B003JOB594/ref=sr_1_9?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1406728750&sr=1-9&keywords=interdynamics+dye

Is this stuff all junk?

That stuff is good. Only thing I would recommend is to use a vacuum pump to remove excess moisture from your system before charging it with refrigerant.

The hissing is absolutely normal. In fact, if it is not hissing, that means your AC is broken.

It is the sound a leak, yes. But a controlled leak. It is the sound of the refrigerant in the high pressure side of the system leaking through a precision-sized orifice into the low pressure side. This pressure drop is what makes time travel possible.

The part you are covering with your hand (circled in the photo) is the precise location of the orifice. It lives inside the line.

I like this guy [:D] Maybe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but that red is cool! Thanks for the comment on the Cali plate, I may have to put it back on. I live in MI where you aren't required to have a front plate and there's nothing to keep someone from using another states plate on the front. I've been using a non license plate that just looks cool but maybe I'll put the other one back on.

test fit of the new benz wheels. just put my kw v2's on and new upper/lower control arms, tie rod ends, and sway bar links. if I feel up to it today, I have to drop the trans because I cant get it into gear and it makes a noise only when the clutch isnt pressed down. bad pilot bearing[mad]

if I can find a brilliant yellow id buy it in a heartbeat. your car is beautiful man, best of luck with it. make sure to keep that paint regularly waxed, you dont want to wind up as another brilliant yellow paint fade victim

Haha, [:d] no it won't be sitting. I'll be driving it down in Southern Illinois while going to SIU, but because I won't be living at home, I won't have a garage to store it in. I'll probably have to get a good outdoor cover for it.

Haha, you know Ive got to rub it in some. It is weird that its the only color Ive ever seen on the B5's fade so badly. I once saw another users BY on here and it was faded like something horrible, and I told myself I hope mine never gets that bad..... open mouth insert foot, because its getting there.

Thanks. With what Ive got done, it makes for a fun daily and still surprises me 3-4yrs later. I still need to take care of a few things and get it retuned. The color is definitely one that is hard to get just right in pictures, but in the sun and right after a wash, it looks amazing.
