View Full Version : Bad Axle Seal?

So about a month ago I hit a pretty good pothole and broke a control arm. While loading the car on a flatbed, we noticed a pretty bad leak, and it wasn't motor oil. The smell of the fluid was too strong. Anyways, I replaced all the control arms and CV boots and a few other things, so I drove around the block to make sure everything was good. Well the leak is still there as expected as I wasn't able to address it without the car running/moving. I have a feeling it's the axle flange seal as it's very wet around that area and a stream is going down the front differential. Either that, or the axle itself isn't seated as far in as it should be. I have no problem pulling the axle and all that crap again if need be, but I want to make sure I have the right idea before tearing it apart again.

Here's a picture of the passenger side axle, which is the one that's leaking. It seems to me that the axle is just pulled out a couple inches from the pothole mishap.

And here's the driver's side, which is dry.

Any help would be much appreciated. My car has been out of commission for over a month now.

I think what your saying is right, pulled out. Are the shields that screw onto those #6 Hex (there's still one screwed in) off to show the axle seating or are they missing completely?

Yea, that definitely pulled out a bit. I wish I could help with how to get it back in there... Good luck with it tho!

It looks like the axle is not in all the way I would personally replace the axle seal tho just to eliminate any possible chance that the seal has been wrecked from the axle not being fully seated

The shields are still there on the top, and nothing on the bottom. I didn't even know there was supposed to be any kind of shield there.

I'm going to pull the hub assembly off today and try to just work the axle back into place, maybe using a BFH and a block if need be. If it still leaks afterwards, I'll pull the the axle out again and replace the seal, which I fear may have been damaged.
