you can get some 12x1.5 nylon lock nuts at ace for like $2. then just drill out literally anything you want. I have a few Billiard ball shift knobs laying around i made this way. you could even drill out an actual shift knob and glue in the nut to make it work.

I've been thinking about that. I have a few 12x1.5 lug nuts and could probably just JB Weld one into a set-screw universal.

I cut the bottom out of a red bull can, filled the can with quiksteel, and then drilled a hole and used the shifter as the tap (it's soft enough to not do damage.) I need to do it over, though. It doesn't hold well. Every few days, I can tighten it another quarter turn or so.

TWM sells knobs with modular threads and they sell them for the B5. Their knobs are really pricey but you can sometimes find them for cheaper on eBay. I got mine from someone who I guess bought it and then ended up not using it (ever) so I picked it up for maybe half of the original price. Its the heaviest they sell (Big Type-R) and the extra weight really does improve the shifting.

You can also buy a Delrin wrapped knob that fits our cars from 034 for close to $100.

Just got back from the hardware store (and did a little googling). There are ALL sorts of neat bits of hardware that would make adapting universal shift knobs a breeze.... and none of that hardware is available in 12mm x 1.5 :(

not alot of hardware stores carry metric stuff, i got mine at ACE. maby that is an east coast thing.

My hardware store had plenty of metric stuff (It's a Tru-Value, more or less the same sort of "neighborhood" hardware store as Ace). But I'm talking about stuff like this:

or:

http://www.tacomascrew.com/core/media/media.nl?id=10901&c=1254522&h=ddff4ebcd29b724fcf28

The first one is available in 12x1.25 and 12x1.75, but not 12x1.5. The second one is simply not available in metric at all. They look like they would be useful for filling the big hole in a universal knob if the hole is not big enough to take a full-size nut. I've just had some success rounding the corners off some lug nuts and jb welding them suckers in, though. I'll road test them tomorrow after I'm sure the JB is cured.

pro tip for the future, jb weld can be cured faster with heat, the more heat the faster the cure but you loose strength. i also believe if its cured with heat around or above its normal threshold, it can withstand that heat after cured. but dont quote me on that last part.

i thought about casting a shift knob out of jbweld tinted black, but the quantity of the stuff i would need got expensive.

I'm using the quick-setting stuff. It's pretty solid within half an hour, supposedly full strength in 4 hours. I'm not in a hurry, anyway. And I only ground down the nuts enough to just barely fit. I put the jb weld on, slide the knob on, then hammer that sucker home. Between the friction fit and the jb weld i don't think it's going anywhere.
