Hello everyone! I'm Bordom, or you can call me Emmanuel. (whichever floats your boat) I'm 19 and I've been around these forums for almost a year now (10 months) and I've posted a few questions and answered others since then. I've been researching much into our B5 generation finding out about our chassis quirks and irks.

Enough about my miscellaneous talking that doesn't pertain to why you actually came to visit. This is my 1996 A4 2.8 12v 5-spd Quattro Manual. I got it with 249xxx Km's and now have 260xxx in the time i've owned it. It's Brilliant Black riding on standard suspension and 225/40/18 Teszen Virus wheels.
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk166/chrias1/myaudi.jpg (http://s280.photobucket.com/user/chrias1/media/myaudi.jpg.html)
I got it as a gift from my Uncle who planned on moving on from the B5 and got himself another (newer) Audi. It came complete with most of the items listed below and a set of OEM winter wheels.

Mods List:
K&N Cold Air Intake with heatshield,
18" Teszen Virus Wheels,
Two-Piece Depo Headlights w/ 35w 6000k HID's,
Stubby "euro" passenger mirror,
Two 12" Alpine Sub-woofers + 1000W amp controlled through an Alpine head unit,
Deleted rear muffler with 2.25" straight pipe,
Blacked out OEM rear tail lights,
35% Tinted windows,
3/4 Wind screen deflectors for the windows,

I have since dealt with:
5 Wheel bearings on 3 wheels,
Rear springs/shocks
Rear diff,
Rear brakes pads/rotors + calipers,
Center carrier bearing (polyurethane'd)
Driver's side upper/lower control arms

Items on the blacklist:
Torn rear inner cv boot, (Raxles at some point)
Cam seals + timing belt at 300xxx km

Future Ideas:
SPDS from Scotty,
Coils/Springs+shocks,
A8 front/rear brake upgrade,

Does anyone know what ECU the A8 ABZ uses?

Use the ABZ ecu. Send it off to have the IMMO turned off. You will get a code because the rear O2s and the auto tranny are missing, but neither will create any drivability issues.

A thought occurred to me today and the idea of swapping in a 2.2T from an S6 was born.

I haven't found much information on this, but as I understand the 2.2T will bolt directly to the 01A. I will need to fabricated engine mounts.

I am unsure if the ECU and engine harness will fit the 96 A4.

It seems like a very straight forward swap if the wiring is the same.

Anyone shed some light on this?

I've got an issue where the inner fender liner is rubbing against the wheel, effectively making atrocious noise and destroying the liner. Are there any clips that hold it back?

The front fender liner is held in by a series of small torx head screws

I assume all of the torx screws are around the edge of the liner right? My issue would be around the just in front of the wheel. At speed the liner will fold inwards towards the wheel and rub against it.

When I first saw them 6 years ago when my uncle bought them, I wasn't a fan either. They've grown on me since.

The screws go around the edge yes, but there is also one or two closer to the inner edge. You don't need the screws that connect the belly pan to the fender liner, but make sure the fender liner sits behind the edge of the belly pan and not in front of it.

If you're missing some screws I probably have some extras laying around I could send you.

Oh and the stubby mirror isn't a mod or a euro option, it was standard on A4s before 99.

My liner rubbed through on the tire, then no more issue [up] I took it out and trimmed it anyway

Update:

I spent 4 hours detailing the exterior of the car and it turned out rather well. It's the first detail I've done since going to Ottawa and there's still much to do.

I restored my FK two piece headlights and they look amazingly clear. Pictures of these will come eventually as soon as I find a cord for my camera. In the mean time, I did a photo shoot with my brother and his 250cc Hyosung at the water treatment plant in downtown Toronto.

Still waiting on a buddy's A4 to be sold to me. (New sport suspension + bilstein sports = replacing my tired standard suspension[drool])

Took the liberty of swapping over the taillights from the 98 over to the 96. It looks much more modern now. Though, I believe a slightly darker red would really pull it off.

Update on suspension swap:

Was able to get the passenger front sport strut assembly out of the 98 and into the 96. Got to the drivers side and that's when things got more interesting.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/14/84cc86fd0f64bbc37d7a399264c488e1.jpg
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/14/7fff3a3ce2e7736c74204c0d30befb74.jpg

Front spring was broken on the bottom of this "new suspension". Turns out all that was done was newer passenger side control arms, struts and top hats for each side.

Disassembled the drivers side strut assembly and the new shock was dead. Must have hit a pretty big pothole to break the spring and kill the shock.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/14/349099427d93b1143423a3d524ff9fd4.jpg

Both rear springs were also a disaster. Broken 1 coil around in the rear.

Long story short this car is going back to my buddy since registration hasn't been changed yet. Paying him for the taillights and misc bolts I broke. I'll hopefully see at least $300 back and it'll all be said and done.

At least I got a still good set of rear strut assemblies from the junk yard.

http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/10/14/4a36a77a472ce1ac7f05d7d7c3052ac9.jpg

Looks like standard suspension is here to stay.

Would it be advisable to use an aftermarket axle in the rear as a replacement? As there isn't extreme movement for the rear axles to come apart it would therefore be okay to use aftermarket axles in the rear. I would keep the original and rebuild it when funds permit, but that isn't an option at the moment.

I've read around on the horrors of aftermarket front axles "taking a dump" when they get installed and the wheel is turned. I haven't found any threads on aftermarket axles in the rear failing as the front do.

Does anyone have experience with aftermarket axles for the rear as replacements?

A lot of people run aftermarket axles in the rear. I haven't really read anything horrible about it. I wouldn't buy the the absolute cheapest you can find though.

Here's a vehicle you don't see everyday in North America

A cactus green 1996 A4 1.9TDI 5-spd Avant. FWD, but Would love to get into a diesel.

TDI gearing for the 2.8 would make it much more fuel efficient.

I highly recommend the OBX 3" catback with fresh OEM-grade cats. The reduced back pressure makes the car feel amazing (much faster buildup of revs) and I sometimes even get a nice pop/crackle when I blip-downshift aggressively.

I've thought about catbacks but I lost quite a bit of low end torque with the muffler delete with a slight drop in fuel economy. Plus, the 12v is pop/crackle happy as is.

Thanks for the recommendation though!

Im having an issue with ride height. I swapped out my rear springs because I thought that they were broken, and I replaced the blown shocks with good junk yard ones. (They're up earlier in the thread)

Anyways, I put them on with new springs I bought from the dealer last year for this car. Now my rear sits 1-1.5" over the tire, while the front is 2.5-3" over. This reverse rake is killing me.

Any ideas here? Could it be the springs are too soft? The other springs I replaced last September 2013 weren't broken at all and were from a later B5 with heavy duty suspension. With those springs ride height was nice and flat.

Help is greatly appreciated before the Great Canadian Winter sets in!

You have the typical 96-97 negative rake. For whatever reason, this seems to be common on our early B5 cars. You do not have the sport suspension correct? My negative rake was fixed by switching to the sport suspension.

That is correct. I have standard suspension. I was throwing around the idea of switching to h&r sports up front to even it out.

I didn't know the 96-97s had this negative rake issue

BaseDrifter
10-26-2014, 12:17 PM
I can think of at least 4 instances offhand of seeing this on 96-97 cars and never on 98+ cars. Did you recently rebuild the front end? New control arms?

Bordom
10-26-2014, 12:22 PM
Front end is still the way I got it, minus a few control arms on the drivers side. It had this negative rake when I got the car, but it leveled out when I replaced the rear springs with ones from a 2000 part out.

That negative rake seems like a huge design oversight for the pre-facelift

I managed to scrounge up some of the old 2.8 12v development that was spear-headed by VAP, a guy named Mance. This guy had such a passion for the 12v he went so far as to build his motor that included a rifle drilled cam [eek]. In the end, he ended up with about 250 CHP with all of his mods and aftermarket engine management.

I haven't been able to find his modified throttle bodies or velocity stacks but with all of his workshops now at my whim, I may delve into this world that's been long abandoned.

One crucial thing to note is the injector ports on the 12v head. By far the WORST engineering oversight I have ever seen from Audi.

EDIT: Forgot to post the Intake manifold bolted to the head. Can you say "where did my horses go?"

I've been thinking up absurd things to do to this 12v when the time comes for rebuild. Seeing on the S4 forums where they all get around to build 3L and going ham, I was wondering if the 3L crank would be plug and play for the 12v block? As I understand it, the cranks are interchangeable for 2.8-3.0L 30vs. So being of the same block family, it should work, should it not?

So, I chipped off some of the paint on the driver rear quarter panel over the center of the wheel well by accident and found a nice helping of rust. I forgot to take pictures of it before starting so this is where I began my documentation.

Surface rust sanded down with 40 grit sand paper then again with 320.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/14/e70e972b869cc1f16178026172779635.jpg

Taped it off and sanded more along the boundaries so the primer would take
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/14/b2ba73d067109b7689015fee4c7806f2.jpg

Two coats of Rust Check rust inhibitor primer. Did a slight wet sand to get some bubbles out, but it was still a bit tacky and didn't turn out too well.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/14/08483c64c4f852be5816972f4b38486d.jpg

Tired coat of primer on. Sat outside for an hour in 0' Celsius with a hair dryer trying to get it to dry faster.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/14/cb7cb246b27fdc3319c1a05143060dac.jpg

Currently sits outside in the cold waiting for a wet sand and re-masking for paint. Called a paint shop that specializes in mixing paint and they wanted $27.50 for the paint and $9.50 for clear. However, they highly recommended since it is a black car that I use general automotive paint and coat. I quote "black is black there's no difference, unless it's a more specialized colour."

Thought about doing the chips in the paint on the drivers doors but is too cold up in Ontario to paint properly for an extended amount of time.

Is this normal? Shifter movement while in 5th on and off the pedal.

https://vimeo.com/111993862

Is this indicative of trans mounts?

Mine does the same thing slightly. If I have my hand on the shifter while I am on and off the gas I will feel a slight movement. I thought it was a little strange too. I'll be swapping my motor and trans mounts soon for 034 ones.

how are all your mounts?
what about the linkage, is it worn out?

The mounts are all stock with 266,XXX km's on them. I've checked my motor mounts and nothing is leaking, so i assume they're still in good condition. I have no idea how to check trans mounts however.

As for the shifter linkage, there's a great deal of side-to-side play when in gear. I was going to upgrade to the JHM bushing so it's not as sloppy.

I thought it was normal because I've learned to drive stick in this car. I only question it now because I was curious.

They are sorta right about the paint. My front bumper is painted with a black from a Toyota paint code, no one would ever be able to tell the difference.

That shifter movement looks normal, my car does the same thing, even with new motor mounts, snub mount, 034 street density transmission mounts, and JHM shifter linkage + bushing.

That would be pretty awesome, but probably extraordinarily expensive. I'm guessing that nobody has done it before either, I'd say compare size and whatnot to the stock 2.8 unit and go from there.

**UPDATE**

Drove home today in fresh Toronto snow. Had some fun tearing up the street as it was a "little" slippery. Got home and parked real nice.

The two pieces that are supposed to be shifted upwards are not the same. Looks factory, as wear marks indicate its correct. However, the removable piece had one missing stud.

Wanted to let everyone know my sun roof doesn't open randomly anymore. But since it's been one day we can't rush things.

Also, while on the highway I noticed my rear end likes to shake its booty. This only happens when I quickly shimmy the wheel back and forth. I can physically feel the rear end tracking on its own, which develops a swaying motion back and forth.

What could it be? Bushings, shocks, misalignment?

The front also wanders a little bit. I'm thinking tie rods but since I haven't checked anything yet I can only speculate.

Input would be appreciated!

I've found myself in a never ending battle with suspension components with this car.

I couldn't deal with the stupid reverse rake anymore so I switched back to my original rear facelift spring assembly. Now the drivers rear suspension groans and sounds like it's loose going over bumps.
I went in, re-tightened everything to make sure I didn't miss anything, and it didn't help.

I stepped one of the shock mount bolts last year and have been running 3 since then with no issues.

Ideas?

Never mind. Took it in for an alignment and techs showed me how fudged the rear end is. Front end isn't far behind. My Febi control arms are already cracked even though I torqued them at ride height. Not even 10k km on them.

Parts list:
Front control arm kit,
Rear tire rods (both),
Rear sway bar end links (both),
Rear bushings for rear upright, to lower control arm.

Needless to say that the rear tie rods are what caused my loose feeling/groaning noise.

Anyone have parts to add to my list?

How difficult would it be to install a single piece drive-shaft without dropping the exhaust or removing the front rear diff cross member? I'll be doing rear track-rods and an axle replacement, so it would make sense to drop the rear diff to make track rod replacement easier.

Could I slide the SPDS through the front cross member?

If I do drop the exhaust, could I still fit it in without dropping the diff or cross member?

What front cross member are you referring to? The driveshaft sits behind the front subframe.

You may get away with disconnecting the exhaust from the down pipe and sliding the driveshaft out towards the front. But the by the book method is to just drop the exhaust out, it's only a few hangers.

Im referring to the cross member that sits in front of the rear subframe which houses the rear diff mount.

I am curious to know if I have to remove that bar to shoehorn the single piece in. I know I'll have to drop the exhaust regardless so that's not a problem.

My problem is if I do have to remove the cross member in front of the rear subframe. I snapped off a bolt head ladst time I was there and am dreading having to drill it out

I have a max budget of $1200. And everything I've seen, even +$2000, are shoddy. Rust, body work, rough running. Audi owners in Ontario like to over price their vehicles [headbang]

I forgot to mention that 96 I'm going to look at doesn't run. Apparently needs a fuel regulator. I'm going to use it to leverage for a cheaper price. For $1700, it better run and drive.

Oh, Haha. That definitely throws a wrench in the gears a bit. Those are fairly cheap, No idea why the owner himself wouldn't have just done that.

If I do pick it up I'll pilfer my current car so the part will be free! I'm thinking it's actually a fuel pump or fuel filter though

It did when it was newer lol. Saw it today and it was shit. Flaking undercoat, fenders rusted through, injectors leaking, stumbles if you let off the idle.

Only desirable thing in that car was the interior. I'm telling ya, Ontario owners want fortunes for piles of crap.

The black one did not have ANY RUST whatsoever. It was beautiful. A few scratches, dent in the rear bumper, and the drivers door had a dent as well but there was no paint damage. Over all aesthetically, it was what I was looking for.

Mechanically however, different story. Needed brakes all around (calipers, rotors, pads), front control arms compete (things I already have)

It didn't run, turned over slower than usual but concluded it was a fuel pump issue. The dude was telling me how his mechanic "had to drop the entire tank assembly to replace the fuel pump," but told him about the compartment on the trunk and then showed it to him. As soon as I did that I knew he changed his mind about keeping the car. He even declined offers of $1200.

I liked him, straight up dude. The search continues

Nope. I'm also going to shop around to see how much it will cost to repair that disaster. I have a feeling, if I do repair it, the factory undercoating will have to come off and be replaced with something like truck bed liner.

RHD for cool factor in NA. There is a RHD cactus green avant available here but that's pretty beat too with $4000 asking price. I concur.

I saw some decent Audis in Japan that could be imported with RHD for around $5k. Don't remember the site though

Audi TDI are a dime a dozen in Europe from what I've read. Buying one should run you about $3k USD. Importing is about another $2-3K.

Looked at that 2000 low km 2.8. It was pretty clean. Though I have some issues with it.

The hood and body had a bunch of rock chips, someone opened their door into the drivers door, missing trim piece on the bumper, over spray on the hood and drivers door, crack in the rear bumper, light scrapes on the edges of the doors, misaligned rear trunk, one speaker works, central locking pump doesn't work, and LCD is junk.

Cleanest car I've looked at thus far. I sadly didn't take too many pictures.

Its got 128k km, or 80k miles

The clutch is higher than my 96 and feels a bit weak. Mine engages sooner than this one does.

Not a spec of rust on this car, which is what I wanted, but the amount of rock chips bother me.

I realize I'm looking for a unicorn (perfect condition for cheap) but this is as close as it gets right?

looks a million times better then the other toilets you posted lol.
Im not a fan of the 2.8 at all but thats just me....whenever i buy something i buy it based off of its modification costs.
If you just want a daily that you wont want to mod then go for it.

why the respray/overspray? bad accident?

Thank you gents! It was an awful stretch to give up that $500. I really didn't want to dip into my savings, but I did.

Hopefully a hand buff and wash will have it looking really smexy. I was also contemplating 3m clear film on the fenders to protect them, as well as a clear bra to help protect from paint chips.

Since I'll be picking it up Saturday, I may as well start with the central locking pump fix.

Symptoms:when lock buttons are pressed, a loud whistle can be heard and then the pump will operate for an amount of time.

Dude told me there was a leak so that's why it's not working. Searching, hasn't turned up any results, only the graphite disk that shatters.

Congrats on the new ride! I think thats a steal for 80k miles with maintenance done, in my area someone would be asking upward of 4k for that car, because there insane, and overpriced lol.

Thanks buddy! My First order of business when taking possession of this car would be to fix that locking pump and fill in all the rock chips with a paint pen.

I'll be swapping over my 96 trunk and the headlight washer covers. After that, going to find a bumper trim piece for the passenger fog light cover.

Had to back out of purchasing. Called the insurance company and they wanted +$2000 on top of my $2000 I already pay. That couldn't be afforded.

Managed to take a small portion of the finish on the knob off, with my phone 10 mins after installing [headbang]

Experience: Immediately felt a difference in shifting. Throw was much easier and felt like a short shifter. Very happy with this.

Solowerks coilovers and the OEM RS4 grill being picked up.

Then it's time to save for that rocker panel to be repaired, or I'll grind it down and use POR15 on it for when I do the rest of my small rust spots as well.

Thinking of having a shop do my control arms, coils, SPDS, ECS rear diff mount, and alignment.

I don't have a garage at this point so it may be worthwhile.

It'll be a while since it's still winter. I've read that they knock a little bit for the first few weeks, but it always goes away. I will write a review on first week impressions and then the first month, 6month and one year as well as mileage on the setup.

A little fiberglass and paint it'll be as good as new!
New door would most likely have robbed painted, that's some thing for a little down the road.;)

It's shit simple.
Step 1. Turn wheel hard.
Step 2. Stomp gas.
Step 3. Maintain slide by throttling to attain maximum style points for the misus

Please note: Any of the aforementioned to be done at your own discretion and not on public roads. I am not responsible for any damages or unfortunate events to befall you should you follow the steps in this post.

Other than the welds, everything looks excellent. The paint is good and springs also look good. I may be missing one top nut as I only only saw one rolling about, but shouldn't be a problem. I can swap one from the originals over.

Since I have two spare rear shock mounts, I was thinking of swapping the rear coils over to those and swapping everything in 30 mins once spring rolls around. Heading to the wrecker to find two front aluminum tophats to replace the original steel ones in a few weeks.

That way the shop I'll be taking everything to won't take so long to get everything together. It'll save me a couple hundred.

Liability, what if they snap at the weld.
And customer satisfaction. I wouldn't want my people complaining about my welding on my products.

I'm looking at about $900 for everything.

Body work will be on my own time with POR15. Thinking about upgrading to 98-99.5 fenders as I can get them for $100 for both brand new. Put some body filler in where the lower fender trim would usually go, and shes good.

Looked over the car today and making a list of body work to do. Oddly enough, my passenger fender is not rusted on the underside.

-Light rust forming on bottom door lips. (All doors)
- little chips in paint that can be filled with a paint pen
-passenger rocker panel (getting worse the more I drive. Gotta POR15 that really soon)
-rear quarter and fender lips bubbling paint
-passenger door to be professionally repaired
-patch of rust right under clear bra on the passenger side and little rock chips under the grille
-something oddly ate through the coast bra and left me with a hole.
-needs a really good polish and wax.

Still one of the better cared for B5s. Pictures later on of all problem areas

You can see that the rot is much worse than I thought. It extends under the protective barrier for 1-2" all around and seems to extend under the door sill. It looks like I've lost 1/2 of the 1/4" of factory metal.

I want opinions on how to proceed with this. POR15 sells an epoxy that is supposed to strengthen and full holes caused by rot. Opinions?

Those are the major cosmetic flaws of the vehicle. Some minor and can be filled in by paint pen. Others (like the tumor on the door and creature living on my rocker) look to require substantial metal work.

I can handle the rock chips and surface rust of the doors, hood, and roof but those two things I'm not confident about. Opinions on how to proceed?

What do you guys think about the condition for it being a 96 with 270,000 km? (About 169k miles for you 'muricans)

I would definitely take care of that rocker, I would sand her down, make sure you go as wide as the rust is even underneath the paint to stop it from spreading, use some par15 or fiberglass put a good few layers on, sand down to perfection and then paint.

Purchased a POR15 super starter kit last night. What worries me is how far upwards it extends. Definitely seems as though it started UNDERNEATH the sill, but I don't want to take it off because they usually break and they are mucho bueno dollars to replace ($300)

I planned to peel off about an inch of the factory protective coating, knock off loose rotted pieces, then sand to a light rusty layer. Then I would jam as much POR15 as I can up under the sill with the paint brush when painting it on. Two coats of that should take care of it, then finish with bed liner.

Smitty, I have no idea how to use fiberglass. You'll have to send me a video as well as a list of locations to pick that up from

Since I have aftermarket Depo Two-piece lights, there is no fog. Lol

I found CHEAP fenders $140 for a pair.

I figure this would be a reliable car while my "go fast nature" would go into a bike. But the yearning for a 4.2 is a powerful thing.

I figure this would be a reliable car while my "go fast nature" would go into a bike. But the yearning for a 4.2 is a powerful thing.

When I need a timing belt, maybe
My one piece spyder heads have the fogs, I'm gonna put some blue bulbs in there or something lol

And do you have a link or is this local?

LOL Sorry, writing a midterm and my mind turned to mush.

I looked again and it's $140 for the Facelift style fenders while our Prefacelift fenders are about $12 more expensive.

The only thing wrong with ours is you have to fill in the holes where the lower fender trim would normally go, IF we had lower door trim (which we dont)

They should be good though.

If you look for fender trim or any other panels for Prefacelift, you have to search using a 99 A4. Don't ask why because I don't know lol

For the fender trim I was referring to all the B5's 97+ that have the lower door trim sitting above the door sill plate. You do have the "lower" fender trim, as do I, but we don't have the "upper" trim over the sill plate.

Looks reputable. Or you can go and get fenders from Rockauto. They're stupid cheap and I don't think they'll fit well if at all

Nothing but the most half decent for your child LOL

If they shipped to Canada, I would have picked them up along with a facelift hood. Sadly they don't, but I figure this would work for you!
