View Full Version : Any B6/B7 S4 owners in need of a healthy motor or looking to sell car w/ blown motor?

My 2005 S4 was sitting outside during the insane hail storm in Fort Collins about a week ago. The body is absolutely trashed. Dents in every panel including a few dents in the A and C pillars. [o_o][o_o][o_o] Even the chrome trim around the windows is hammered.

I'm guessing the car is going to be totaled however it won't be looked at until July 11th. After a timing failure ~2 years ago, I had just about the entire motor rebuilt by an ex-VW tech. I replaced nearly every timing part in the engine other than the chains (determined they weren't needed) and did tons of other maintenance at the same time.

- Heads were completely rebuilt with OEM parts by a good machine shop in Denver.
- Hard to reach sensors, valve cover gaskets, serpentine belt/tensioner, spark plugs, and I can't even remember what else. I wanted to make sure I didn't need to touch the engine for another ~75k miles other than routine maintenance.
- The short block had 81,680 miles on it when it was rebuilt and has ~98k on it currently. Cylinder walls looked great when the heads were pulled.
- Runs flawlessly. You can drive it before hand. I'll give you receipts for every part I purchased.

Since I'm sure the insurance company won't give me an extra $10k for the rebuilt engine I've come up with a few options.

1) Find someone in need of a motor and swap them. Your motor needs to be running but I don't care if it has oil consumption issues or startup rattle. Obviously I'd have to turn my car over to insurance in running condition to the insurance company. If you are in need of a good motor I'll save you a huge amount of money over doing the timing service and other parts on your current motor.

2) Buy back the totaled car if the buy back price is reasonable. I could then part out the car and sell the engine and other aftermarket parts. Junkyard engines with questionable maintenance history still sell for $3-4k and they're hard to find!

3) I'm on the lookout for a B6/B7 for sale with a blown motor so I could swap my healthy drivetrain into a clean body. Please keep an eye out and let me know if you see one for sale for a reasonable price!

I'm hoping to find someone in need of a motor in the next week to have something lined up if insurance totals the car. Things will move quickly if they total it and I need to have a buyer lined up.

Other parts I would have to sell if this goes through:
- Stasis MS coilovers (it will be hard to let these go [=(])
- JHM trio short shifter
- JHM Stage 4 clutch on a Clutchmasters billet chromoly flywheel (lighter than stock but less chatter than the AL flywheels)
- O34/JHM street motor and transmission mounts
- JHM tune (might not be worth it after sending to JHM to change the VIN)
- Car has an APR exhaust with the middle resonator removed. Sounds great but hasn't fit right since day 1. Stock downpipes with pre-cats removed and V-band connections to APR catback. I'd sell it for cheap if someone doesn't care about the issues.

The transmission is in good shape. It shifts great with the JHM trio. No grinding or obvious signs of wear.

I actually replaced the transmission fluid right after getting the engine rebuilt since I couldn't find a maintenance record for the last time it was changed. I was pleasantly surprised when the Audi fluid I drained out looked brand new but I replaced with Motul Gear 300 anyway.

Please let me know if someone may be interested. [up]

Pictures don't even begin to show the damage on the car since the camera only picks up a few dents at a time. Some of the pictures I took make it look like the body is still in perfect condition!

Hood was replaced two years ago and in perfect condition before the storm. [o_o]

Good size dent in the a-pillar. It takes some serious force to dent the pillars.

A few of the car dealerships got hit hard. I walked around Weston Auto's lot and they had some very nice cars with bad damage. C63, CLS550, B8 S4, E60 M5, 135i, 335xi, X6, and I can't even remember what else.

I might be interested in swapping some of my A4 parts for your S4 parts before the insurance company takes it.. If that's an option.

Will get back to both of you (as well as those who have sent PMs) this evening. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay on sending PMs. I'm in the process of moving and didn't have a change to dig out the maintenance record folder. I'll send out PMs later tonight!

I wouldn't mind picking swapping bumpers ha ha.

Btw the guys at BW have a b7 avant with a blown motor. I Gabe say it was for sale once. Maybe check and see if it is.

Sorry to see that happen. Any word from your insurance?

Cheyenne just had a real nasty large hail storm. Just enough room in the garage. Moving boxes and furniture in the way from our move.

Sorry that I haven't send PMs to anyone at the moment. I had the car inspected by the insurance company and I was very surprised at the quote. It's much lower than I was expecting. A few thousand $$$ away from being totaled but they missed a broken tail light and don't think they put in enough hours for many of the repairs.

Does anyone work at a dealership or collision repair shop that can give me an hourly quote to replace ALL of the chrome trim surrounding the windows on both sides? I looked through ELSA but I don't have enough experience with how the labor charges are set up to get an accurate number. I have read the rear triangular windows must be broken to change the trim, and the whole process is pretty time consuming since the interior has to be completely pulled apart and the trim is riveted to the car. I think the insurance company quoted an hour or two to replace all of the trim and I don't believe it's even close to what it would actually cost.

On a separate note, I appreciate everyone's help! At the moment I'm trying to decide whether to fix the car completely, part out (I'd need $7k for the engine for this to make sense), or buy an S4 with a blown motor to swap my drivetrain in. Please keep your eyes peeled for a B6 or B7 with a blown motor for sale. Unfortunately not a fan of the avant body style. Not a single one on Craigslist or Autotrader in the area that isn't already being parted out.

Thanks!

My $0.02.

If they can fix the body, keep the car. You have a mechanical history with the current car that you can't get buying a replacement.

Good luck!

Benji,

Still dealing with insurance but my motor is available for the right price. It would be an outright purchase since I no longer need one to swap out. I'll send you a PM this evening.
