Hey guys, just got hold of a set of genuine 20" rotors for my 3.0 BiTdi avant and was wondering what is the widest tyre i can use on the car? Standard fit is 255 35 20 but would i be ok with 275 or 295 wide tyres without rubbing issues on the rear or the steering? Wheels are 8.5" ET45
thanks

The widest tire that you can get to fit isn't necessarily what is best to use. 255 is good for an 8.5" wide wheel. A wider tire won't seat as well on the rim, the sidewalls will be bowed in, and your contact patch won't be any better. The wider tire will also add extra weight.

^ I second this. 255 is the widest that should go on an 8.5" rim. I'm sure you can easily get away with 275, maybe even 295 "without rubbing," but it will actually hurt your handling rather than increasing it. Going too wide will increase your chance of blowing or bubbling the sidewall, or the whole tire coming off the rim during a turn. It's like wearing shoes few sizes too big.
