View Full Version : my licence plate solution

since i wanted the quattro script i couldn't get the licence plate frame as there isn't enough room for our lousy fat licence plates here in NA.
1. pop out little plastic tabs in these spots...voila, beneath these tabs are screw holes for a euro plate frame. these will come in handy.

2. insert licence plate screws.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/Stunners4/RS7%20plate%20mod/DSC02695_zps758efbd3.jpg
3. rare earth magnets attach quite well to the screws. now buy a bunch of these flat rare earth magnets to stack on top of each other so they can reach the licence plate. cost <$10.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/Stunners4/RS7%20plate%20mod/DSC02697_zps683853d6.jpg
4. get some 3M strips that you would use for hanging things at home. dollar store, cheap.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/Stunners4/RS7%20plate%20mod/DSC02705_zps0c21c418.jpg
5. figure out on your licence plate where you want the magnets to attach for optimal height and right/left positioning. now attach those 3m double sided stickies.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/Stunners4/RS7%20plate%20mod/DSC02707_zps98120b5c.jpg
6. attach a stack of magnets to 3m sticky.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u275/Stunners4/RS7%20plate%20mod/DSC02709_zpse30f67ff.jpg
7. now attach whole contraption to vehicle. completely removable and totally reversible with no cutting, gluing etc.
to keep the plate from covering the script/frame i folded the blank lower white space under. looks pretty good imo.
even passed the cop sniff test today as a radar trap cop pulled out behind me as i drove by, later passing me and admiring the beast :)

Does it hold up after banging around in traffic?

Nice job! Those will no doubt hold. Have this on my TT and it doesn't go anywhere when I forget to remove it.

Cool trick, might have to do that if I decide to put some Europlates on the front of my car. Glad I live in a state that only require rear plates

Very cool solution! Much better than the double sided tap I used for the Euro style plates.

Nice job! We're so lucky that we don't have to have front plates in Florida. I'd be a fugitive of the law.

It looks great!!! But can you shed some light on how you "fold the blank lower white space under"?
The US license plate in that position will also block the Quattro lettering at the bottom of the license plate...just wonder how you folded the bottom of the rigid license plate to avoid covering up Quattro.
Thx

great idea for Denver where the fine is $100 from the parking cops !

I think you're better off moving somewhere that doesn't require front plates. [cool]

It's pretty simple. Just put the plate face down on the floor and get a piece of wood with a straight sharp edge. Line the edge of the board up with where you want it folded and then stand on the board and fold plate back with your hand. I used a rubber mallet on the backside of the plate to finish it off so the folded edge was as flat and flush with the front as possible.

I think you should be promoted to administrator and get a free APR tune and free wheels for this tutorial. Thank YOU!

Thank you sir. Now I have a solution to go to the city or long trip without spending a ridiculous almost $100 for a tow hook license plate holder.

So, maybe i did something wrong, but the magnets didn't work perfectly for me, gave about 55% hold, then i put a nice zip tie on that SOB and now its not going anywhere lol. Thanks!

I finally did this solution last night. It works perfectly without any issues and I also painted the screws black so that they look blended in with the grille.

nice job, now just fold under the bottom part of the plate if you so desire.
instead of the 3M stickies, i updated the mod and used some cement/glue for the magnets attaching to the licence plate. there is no way it'll ever come loose now and completely reversible on the vehicle side at least.

I only need something to cover my ass from police or meter maid so I don't really concern about aesthetic when the plate is on since I will run without the plate most of the time anyway LOL
And yes, I also put the glue under the magnets to ensure that they won't come loose and we are totally on the same page, I don't care if the plate is gonna be a mess as long as the car is immaculate.

Maybe you have got bad quality magnet. Was the rare earth mentioned on the package? I just did trial run on freeway driving like a maniac in dynamic mode and the plate is stuck to the grille without fail.

Whatever works for you my friend. The magnets I used are so strong that I had a hard time even just to separate them.

Years ago, there was a guy with a B7 S4 who did the magnet mod - they were strong enough that they held the plate on with a microfiber cloth between the magnets on the plate and the car (magnets were behind the bumper). Done right, those things are solid.
