So last month my S4's temperature sensor went bad, had to send to the local auto shop, take the supercharger out and replace the sensor. This month is another story!

So I was just cruising along, driving under normal conditions and all of a sudden a little pop. Barely noticeable and could have been mistake as a bump in the road (New Orleans, bumps everywhere) and all of a sudden power steering was gone, and I won't lie half of me was kinda excited, i hate power steering, but I also knew something was wrong. I pulled over and turned off the car and turned it back on. I was on the side of a major road so I went on to a side street. Then about 1 minute later the "alternator is not charging the battery" light came on, so it was time to see whats going on. Also for reference my car is B8S4 2011 and I just hit 36k miles. I pop the hood and it just wreaks. Burnt rubber smell. The interesting part was, half of the belt was still attached. Half of it was shredded off. Then I also saw that the bits of shredded belt had wrapped around the supercharger pulley etc. Now I am getting both belts replaced, and then taking a further look at everything.

My mechanic and I are both completely stumped. No idea what could have caused this...

UPDATE: Harmonic Balancer went bad, so currently I'm getting 2 belts replaced and the Harmonic Balancer. Also I am officially upgrading to APR STG 2 since they already have the entire front of the car pulled out, might as well throw that on other than do it and have to pay for the labor again. Currently really really excited .Should be getting my car back (13th of June). ALSO IT WAS MY THERMOSTAT THAT WENT BAD. Excuse me for calling it the temp sensor causing much confusion among us.

Sidenote: (wouldn't it be cool if there was a setting in cars like ours where you could just disable power steering? That would be awesome IMO)

It wasn't the SC belt that went, it was the belt that is looped up to the AC, PS, Alternator, etc. So I don't think that would've effected it.

Any chance old age got to it at 35k miles?

One might change the belt at over 50k-60k miles or 6 years to be overly conservative. They should last over 60k miles, but will be showing age at 6 years.

Belt failure coincidence?

Time, Heat, Solvents, Oil & Age affect the belt reliability. Did a solvent get spilled on the belt? Did the wrong belt get loosened & end up off track, when the mechanic tried to relieve
the SC belt tension.

You're under warranty, why take it to a non-Audi facility at all? Location issue?

I've voided all warranties I believe. I don't want a TD1 flag from the dealership either

To replace the coolant temp sensor the super charger doesn't have to come off.
Your in Louisiana?
I'm a tech at the B. R. Dealer

Did they change thermostat? That's under super charger.

This is what happened, excuse my terminology, it was the thermostat.

Talked to the guys at the shop today, and they say the Harmonic Balancer is bad and thats what caused my serpentine belt to rip up. So now I'm getting that replaced.

Yeah im in Louisiana, I've been going through Greff Motors, love Randy Jr and they've been pretty awesome about fixing things and installing my ECU tune, and possible future upgrades.
As the post says above, its the thermostat, my mistake

"Harmonic Balancer is bad" ......Really?.... that seems odd.

I haven't heard of harmonic balancer being bad, but you are in good hands at Greff motors. We actually warrantied his Mechatronics in his monster Stage 3 A3.
