View Full Version : Tool Exchange Program

After rebuilding my engine I find myself with a lot of audi/vw specific tools and they were not cheap. Most of them I will never reuse (fingers crossed). So after thinking about it, I thought it might be beneficial for the community if we started a loaner program on our spare audi tools. That way others will not have to fork over the cash that a few of us already have. I don't really know how to regulate this or prevent people from scamming the good people who are willing to loan out their tools. I would think possibly having the loanee put up some form of collateral whether it just be half the cost of the tool or just some form of a deposit that they would get back once the tool was returned to the owner. Also I would expect the loanee to pay for shipping.
Here are the tools I have that I'm willing to loan out to others in need:

Great idea. I rented the torque plate to have my block bored from some members here. WAAAYYY better than spending the $400 or so to buy my own for a one time use.

Great Idea indeed
Fraggy, in think in order to make things perfect and searchable, you should post the tool PN (if any) and a picture
On the same token, I have the injector removal kit. Injector removal becomes really easy, and Teflon seal replacement is a walk in the park.

This would of been helpful when I did my seals on my injector.

GREAT idea. I'd just use Paypal. Have people put down a deposit equal to 3/4 the value of the tool and pay for shipment both ways. This protects the loaner and is a great benefit to the loanee. Shipping on small items is pretty minimal. I know I'd certainly love to have this kind of a resource if the need be.

Yeah agreed, I guess if the person is really in a crunch and you trust them then the deposit could be adjusted.
If I didn't work on multiple german cars I know I wouldn't want to purchase the tool.
Love this.
Fraggy - I'll probably be in touch for the cam timing equipment & polydrive.
I have a brake piston retraction set, stubby metric triple squares, and probably a few other things. Need to have a look around.

It'd be awesome if there was a way to integrate this into the classifieds somehow... Or if I had the time to put together a website for it. This thread might get real clogged haha.

Yeah just post up a picture, part number and what it might be used for.

Yeah we need to find a way to have this work more like a check in check out system rather then just using post. Probably needs to be tied to someones email so that they get a notification when someone wants to borrow something.

If I feel motivated, I could put together a website that could handle it... just would take some time to develop.

Do It! Then we could just have logins. Then we can maybe get the link put into a sticky. The website woudn't need to be fancy, just have a list of tools each tool would be linked to a person and it would sate if it's available or not. When the took comes back the loaner could check it back in. Seems reasonable but I don't develop websites.

I'm down for anything that will make my life easier when I do my chain tensioner and timing belt later this season.
That injector kit looks good too, Phil!

Love this thread. Sub'd. I'd contribute, but my most specialized tool at the moment is a flat-head screw driver.

I got everything you need and I've done it 3 times, but only once successfully. I can help you with any questions.

You need to step up your tool game, Sears has a nice 256 piece tool set. You can usually find it for less then $200.
