So last Friday I was pulling out of a parking lot in 1st gear when all of a sudden I hear a bang. The car was still running so attempt to pull away, but then car just revs and won’t move. WTF could cause this? My car is at the shop waiting on a verdict.

Can you give us some additional info? Mileage, abuse, etc..

Often times all of the warning signs are there but people do not notice them.

The car is my daily driver, and the car is babied not raced or beat on. I just had the CV boot cover replaced two weeks ago before a long 5hr drive to the mountains for camping and the car was running like a champ. My shop just worked on the car a said she was fine, I started hearing a little noise right when I would come off the clutch in 1st gear.
This started a few days before this happened, but was not really loud to the point where I should take it in to the shop. The car is 500 short of a 100,000 it’s a 07, after the bang noise the car would only rev. I shut it off, and started it back up again. If the clutch was bad the car would not be able to start right?

The clutch has nothing to do with whether the car starts or not. There is simply a switch on the pedal that allows the car to crank when the pedal is pushed. How does the pedal feel? I'm having a hard time thinking of a clutch component that would make a bang when it failed. I would also think that the clutch would fail in the engaged position. Check all of your axles. If you broke an axle or CV joint, it would go bang. With one of them effectively disconnected, the car will not move and will just rev.

My shop just did a CV boot cover two weeks ago, do you think they caused this problem?

I had a friend with an S4 that had a similar thing happen. Turned out that it wasn’t the clutch, but one of his CV joints let loose and was spinning freely. Oddly enough, when one CV is just spinning freely, the rest of the wheels receive no power and the car will not move, like altuthman pointed out. My suggestion…check all the CV joints and make sure are working properly.

Cant say for sure thats your problem…but I would check all the CV joints and make sure are working properly.

This is another good point. I would look into this first. Especially since you just had work done.

If not, time to remove the clutch and replace it with this beaut:

Ehhh, could or could not be the clutch. Agreeing with what everyone else has said, with experience of a clutch literally blowing to peices I did not hear a bang or anything to indicate she blew until I went to shift and the clutch just sunk straight to the floor. If I remember correctly I could only start my car once or twice after it until a shop got in it and did some magic to get the pressure back in the pedal.
