View Full Version : Anyone go from 19" to 20" wheels? Looking for real world results

Aside from personal opinions regarding which looks better, has anyone made the upgrade from 19" to 20" wheels? Looking for feedback from people who have made the switch.

I live in the midwest and roads are not always the greatest, but feel like my AG M510's seem small at times. I am lowered on H&R OE, and the ride has gotten a bit bumpy and slightly more harsh than stock...so I'm curious if 20 inch wheels will drastically make the ride a lot more harsh and bumpy.

thanks for any feedback

It really depends on which tire/size you go with. I made the switch and have 255/30/20 on and they are harsher than the 255/35/19 I came from. My commute is only 12 miles a day so it really doesnt bother me and I am EXTRA careful when driving and looking out for bumps and potholes when I am not on my daily commute.

I also went to a 20" summer set up. I use my OE 19" setup as a dedicated winter set. I'm also on H&R OE Sports. Here are my observations:

The 19's ride a good bit smoother (255/35/19) than the 20's (255/30/20), there doesn't seem to be a hugely noticeable difference in steering, etc. from one to the other when used in the appropriate weather conditions, but the 20's in my opinion look abundantly better on the car. There are a couple of real world issues you'll have to deal with, one being sharp bumps in the road and the ever present pot holes that riddle the streets of the north east here (and the reason that I'm back to my winters for a few days while my 20" summers get straightened and refinished). So if you drive on roads that are less than perfect, definitely be extra vigilant with the 20's.

thanks for the feedback all. I so up in the air with the 20's. I agree they look so much better, just not sure if i want to deal with all the possible issues they might come with.

I have 20x10 all around with a 255/30/20 tire and have an aggressive offset as well. I think the S4 should have come with 20's, because the 19's just look small. I actually think my 20's ride more smoothly, hope this helps. Picture below for reference!

30 series is not for everyone, I don't mind them too much, but I think about going back down to 19's, probably some B7 RS4 Hartmann reps, to remove any possibility of ever rubbing and to get a less harsh ride.

At my ride height in the front (25 1/2" FTG), which is not the most slammed S4 around, I have a little rub in the front on higher speed turns when hitting a dip at the same time, not a biggie, its somewhat due to the ET35 offset on 9inch wide wheels also, but its kind of ghetto.

My alignment shop told me you pretty much need to run 30 series at 40-41 PSI, otherwise you risk denting your rims easier, at 35psi, they are comfortable though.

Been running 20's since 2009 on a B8 A4, B8 S4 then my B8.5 S4. No issues at all, its a bit harsher...but nothing that is worth worrying about for my usage.

I know this is all probably in the wheel and tire section, but for 20" wheels what is the most used/optimal width and offsets? For example, I know a lot of ppl use 19x9.5 with around a ET40 offset.

I really wanted a 20X10 et42 wheel but TSW wouldnt sell them to me saying they would rub....especially with my SuperSport springs. I ended up with a 20X9 et35 and glad I did because they have a slight rub in the rear if I have people in the back or if I go over a big dip in the road at speeds.

what is the optimal offset for 20x10 on H&R OE's?

I went from 19s to 20s. Obviously side wall height would make a difference in ride. You could go with a slightly greater diameter tire than you have to increase your side wall height and help with the ride. Personally, I didn't notice much of a difference. I put on Michelin tires, many say they are the best? I've been spanked on this web site for what I did. I'm running 265/35s in the front on 9 inch wide wheels and 295/25s on ten inch wheels on the rear. I'm of the opinion the wide tires help the ride as well. Good luck.

You've got options with OE's- I'm running 255-30's ET 35 on a 20 x 10 and I'm almost positive you can fit a 265-30-20 Tire with no rubbing and no stretch- at least with the Hankook V12.

If I can piggyback this:

Would Adaptive Suspension temper the harshness of 20"s? Would adding 20s alter the function of the electronic shocks that come with the adaptive suspension? What about adding springs and 20s? (I tried searching and there is too much use of ADS for Audi Drive Select instead of Active Dampening Suspension)
