View Full Version : One of the center piston rings was upside down in my engine

I just realized looking at the pictures that the center ring on this piston was upside down, the bevel pointed by the red arrows should be facing down towards the crankshaft.

Did you do that or did it come like that from Audi? This might explain why audi has replaced entire engines for oil consumption.

I bought the car with 24k miles but the car was modified by the previous owner, revo tune, exhaust, FMIC so not really sure what happened before, but this is the first time this engine was opened since I bought it.

DUDE! WTF?

My question is the same as above--is that from factory, or subsequent mis-installation?

To bad you could take it back now and get a new engine...

no, I have too much shit on it. I'm in the process of installing IE drop in rods and to be honest I don't have the time and energy to do it even if I could.

If I had a spare car, I think I would spend the effort to tear mine apart to find out. That's ludicrous!

Yeah I feel you, I just finished my build and it takes everything out of you. I wish you the best of luck and hope that it idles perfect when you get done.

Mine goes really slow, I've been gone for 5 weeks I had a lot of catch up to do now I start being really busy at work. I have to finish it in the next couple weeks otherwise I see impossible to finish it after.

And yes, isn't that the best feeling when you have a smooth idle after do major work?

It's not worth the effort just to check that.

I don't know I haven't reached that point yet lol. Mine idles like shit.

Sorry to hear that. What tune do you run?

I'm stock right now I'm holding off on tune until I get the engine running normal.

So you're running the Franken on a stock tune?

Yes with manual boost controller. I don't want to tune it till I get S3 injectors, FMIC, and Upgraded fuel pump. I'm going with a custom tune so that's why I'm holding off. Plus I thought it would suck to have a sweet tune while breaking in the engine.

Not the first time VAG has done this. The 99.5 MKIV VW Jettas, which were built in Mexico, had all of their piston rings installed upside down. Specifically, on the 2.0L 8V I4 engine. It resulted in ridiculous oil consumption. 1L every/1000 miles, at a minimum. I'm not sure if any other MY's of that platform (and/or engine codes) were affected.

Wow, how do you know this, do you have more info, maybe a link? I'd be an interesting read.

Makes me worry a little about the mk7 GTI being built in Mexico.

Whoa!

Wonder if this is why my 2008 has its awesome oil consumption...

Shiro you're a BPY engine I'm assuming by the Crowned pistons? (I bet you even have a red T huh?!?!?!)

This is actually well documented, and it's not "because of mexicans" lol, the piston rings for the 2.0 8 valve AEG engine were machined and stamped upside down! The assemblers followed proper procedure and it was tracked back to the ring supply and manufacturing. A lot of golfs and Jettas had engine rebuilds in the early MK4 days.

But it seems that ANY piston ring issue in the last 15 years gets lumped into this occurrence with no real relevance, it has happened since but not to the extent we saw in 1999/2000, seems like a ton of people with any VAG engine that burns oil say ohh yeahh dumb VW my rings are upside down!

My BPG had crowned pistons. I didn't think BPYs were installed in B7s from the factory.

BPG, BPY. same difference.

My old b7 was BPG I think but I could never totally discern the last letter so I've always gotten the y and the g confused ever since.

BPY is the same engine, but for VW cars. I think the oil pan is different. Eric used a BPY block in his car after punching a hole in his old one IIRC.

I have the BPG engine. I didnt really motive any oil consumption but I've been changing oil around 3-3.5k miles

here's how the pistons came out after soaked for about one hour in Chemi-dip, I'm very happy with the result

My '99 beetle was fortunate enough to not have this issue, but the upside down rings was not limited to the jettas. Many of the late '99's through early '01's had issues with the rings.

Wow! that turned out great, how many miles were on your car? My pistons looked like shit and had pitting.

I'm wondering if this is the same issue my B7 have, I just find out my cylinder 3 is gone and is because the piston ring.
