View Full Version : DIY for AMI How To Run a 3.5mm cable from behind your glove box to your arm rest.

For those of us with AMI, we didn't get a convenient AUX jack in the arm rest. Sure we can buy the AMI to 3.5mm cable that goes in our glove box, but who wants to keep reaching over to the glove box and plugging and unplugging your phone every single time you need to use it? It's very inconvenient, so i decided to find a solution and I finally did it.

I ran a 3.5mm jack connection from the glove box to the arm rest in the center console. I bought an AMI to 3.5mm cable from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007VWEEQQ/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), along with a 12 foot 3.5mm cable, also from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009UEBUZQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I then used this guide (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/505118-Glove-box-removal) to remove the glove box to run the 12 foot 3.5mm cable from behind the glove box along with this guide (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/592333-AMI-armrest-cable-reroute-Express-Version-*No-cutting-or-glvoebox-removal-required*) to route the cable from the behind the glove box, under the seat and finally to the armrest. Under the seat, I didn't want the cable getting tangled up with other parts, so I stuck it under a cover under the seat (as pictured).

I am very pleased with the results and can finally use my smart phone or any compatible device to stream sounds from Songza, Pandora, Spotify, YouTube or the like to my AMI, whether it be my phone or someone elses phone. Overall this mod cost me $20 and all of my morning because I went running around trying to find the radio removal tool to remove the AMI unit, but in the end ended up using two thin screw drivers and a third hand to pull out the AMI unit while I pressed the release buttons holding the AMI unit down.

Special note: There is no opening in the glove box for the 3.5mm end of the AMI cable to go through to be able to run it behind the glove box, however, there is a factory cut opening underneath (you can see where the female end of the 12 foot cable is sticking down from) where the AMI unit rests, so I ran the 12 foot cable through there, however, I used a razor blade to cut an opening on the plastic housing of the AMI unit to prevent the 12 foot cable from being pinched. Once I did that, I rested assured knowing the 12 foot cable was not pinched.

Here you can see the little notch I cut out (just above the little screw) using a razor blade. This is the underside of the AMI unit.

Another note: I decided to use a 1/4" drill bit to make a hole in the small cover to run the end of the 12 foot 3.5mm cable through, but 1/4" is too small and I didn't have a larger bit to make the hole larger right now, so that part will have to wait til I go to my dad's house borrow one of his.

Edit: Finally got around to drilling a larger hole and now my DIY is complete.

Great write up! [up]

Although if I could make a minor suggestion, if you temporarily remove the kick panel and passenger seat, you would be able to lift the carpet up and run the cable underneath for an even cleaner look! Then you should probably be able to run the cable completely under the carpet to the center area and straight up through. Would take an extra hour or so, but the benefits would pay off visually.

First off, thank you!

Regarding the cleaner look, I completely agree running it under the carpet would be best. Visually, I don't think anyone would notice but me, but good for reference anyway!

Thanks!

After one day of switching AMI cables (between 3.5mm end & 30 pin end) just twice, I decided to just stick with the 3.5mm end. I will lose the feature of being able to see the track songs on the AMI display along with the ability to change songs using the radio and steering wheel controls, but at least I'll have the ability to switch between my Android phone and iPod without needing to switch AMI cables. I have a convenient power socket in the arm rest that will keep my iPod and phone charged, so I'm happy with that.

Maybe try drilling a hole.

I'll be doing this, only running it thru and down the center console.

I ran mine down and through the center console. I didn't use a 3.5 audio cable. I used a lightning extension to a lightning/30 pin apple adapter that is in the glove box. That way my phone charges and still retain the title/tracks.

Was thinking of doing this soon. How long of a cable did you need? Currently using the Lighting/30pin adapter and reaching into my glovebox is annoying!

Great guide, I will make sure to follow this thread hopefully soon!
Just a tiny of topic. I got the Bluetooth phone prep option. Call quality basically sucks.. Is it possible to hook the phone via aux (just like in this guide) and when doing calls, it will use the car's microphone. Or is it strictly for Bluetooth? I want to achieve high quality music (AUX) and high quality phone calls. Eventually, any other solution for this? thx

Outstanding, gonna do this soon. My bluetooth adapter is failing, prefer hard-wired anyway.
