What is the commonly used code reader/reset tool used on these cars. I own an e 39 M5, and am used to my Peake code reader, and am curious what the equivalent is for a B8 S4 car. Also where is the best place to get them. Thanks in advance for your help..S

Get a Vagcom. Read codes and unlocks functionality in your car.

The El-Cheapo code readers from the mass market retailers like Autozone, etc. seem to work on some codes, but not others. The real solution in from Ross-Tech @ http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/

Much more than a code reader/reset tool, very helpful for customizing some aspects of the car's electronic systems, and a must-have for doing jobs like rear brake service.

Or you can pick up an ELM327 (http://www.amazon.com/ELM327-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Scanner-Scantool/dp/B0051CAE1C) and download the Torque app for your phone, set you back < $30. I've had a Peake before as well but the option I mentioned and the others above offer way more options than the four digit code and a reference book the Peake tool does, except it reads the BMW specific codes. Ideally I'd suggest the Ross-Tech option.
