Hey guys,

question for all you do it yourselfers out there, my S4 just rolled 8000km so need to do my first service.

What are you guys using for oil? or just the audi oil from the dealer?

thanks

This question is never easy to answer, it gets asked often and there really is no right answer.

Bottom line, use whatever you want on the approved list.

Personally I like using Mobil 1 0w/40, I've seen great results from oil tests and previous cars. I also like that I can run over to walmart and pick up a 5qt jug for $26 whenever I want to, I don't need to order it online and pay for shipping etc.

But thats me, everyone is different. I find myself to be a stubborn man. In my old car I ran 10w-30 dino religiously, took my friends about 6 oil reports and an engine teardown to steer me towards the light.

Castrol 5w-40 synthetic is what i use, at a price of $58 thankfully for the connection I have.
but that can come out to about

ease of purchase is improtant... i pretty much live in the middle of norwhere hahah. When i called Audi to get some filters the parts guy was pressuring me to come to the dealer beacsue the first service is free. I asked if he would pay the 1600km round trip it takes for me to get there. I got a no for an answer and he then proceed to process my order! lol.

My company has a oil sample lab so i always send off for analysis. One of the best things anyone can do for piece of mind your engine and other companents running healty.

Awesome! I usually send off to blackstone due to how easy and affordable it is. Since you are in a different market you might be able to find some other recommended oils up there, the Napa auto in my old town actually had a few recommended oils in stock all the time.

But again I stick with tried and true 0w-40 Mobil 1, since you see more below freezing temps for longer periods of time you may want to look around for other weights from the preferred list.

I let my dealer (who I trust) just do my 5000m service but I brought along my own Motul oil for them to use. I usually use Royal Purple in my Shelby I had, but I was told the Motul was very good oil for the Audi's so that is what I bought. Does anyone here use Royal Purple in their S4's?

Just got a new S4 yesterday. I do my own oil changes. Service manager said as of now nothing is better than Penzoil Ultra 5W-40, and any decent filter will suffice. He has a 2013 S4 and won't use what the oil the dealership stocks. The ultra is about $9 bucks a quart and the car takes about 7 quarts, give or take. I just ordered 5 boxes on line.

Pennzoil ultra euro is good but analysis shows plenty of oil better than standard pennzoil ultra, including m1 euro 0w-40 which is cheaper and widely available

Word, M1 is what I use. Buy one jug and 2 bottles and put it all in with a Mann filter I buy off Amazon. Can't beat it.

Lots of good choices. M1 is fine but just so you know it is NOT 100% full synthetic. Although IMHO, that doesn't really matter. BTW, does anyone actually have issues with what their dealer is using?

This has been argued back and forth about a billion times and honestly, it's only not a synthetic because of the supposed base stocks it's built on. That said, considering all the other oils people have analyzed against it, it still performs better and if it does, then so be it. If there's one complaint I have against it is that it does seem to want to burn a bit more than other oils. I think all M1 oils do for some reason. I had an issue with it in my previous car (which wasn't an Audi) and now this one a bit too. Not much, but about half a Q or closer to 1 the closer I get to that 5k oil change interval. Initially, while it's still new, it's fine, which is really weird to me.

According to dozens of posts on BITOG the M1 0w40 502 has a tendency to sometime shear.

I have 125,000 miles on my B8 and I have done a oil analysis on each oil change and have tried a few different oils. My favorite is Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40. It seems to hold it's viscosity the TBN the best plus the wear metals seem to be the lower that other oils. I also like it because it's supposed to have more detergents that most competitors and that cannot hurt deposit buildup of many VAG DI engines. I've run it to 11,000 miles and still have plenty of protection left in the oil according to Blackstone labs.

The first oil change should be covered by Audi for free.

Agreed.
All the reports I have read all say that M1 is a fine oil plus it is widely available for just about $35 for a 5qt jug + 2 qts.
HOWEVER... the reports I have seen conclude that Pennzoil Euro Ultra 5w-40 is superior. It is harder to find and a bit pricier. Since I have Amazon Prime, I just had 3 boxes (18 qts) delivered for just $127, which is just $49 a change. I think my car is worth the effort of planning ahead, stocking oil and filters when I need them, and spending just $14 more per change than M1. If you put it in perspective, an oil change at the stealer is $180!!

I always use a factory filter. Since they are just a cartage they are cheap from the dealer. I used Mobil 1 in my previous audi's B5 and B7 and I also use it in my honda turbo jet ski. I don't have any issues with using mobil one. I always buy it from walmart for 25 for a 5 qt jug. I use either 0-40 or 5-40 The dealer will do my first oil change on mine since its free.

FYI, that 5-40 available from M1 is not VW certed. Just FYI... I too used to use it on my previous car, but it wan't an Audi and I had to buy it and normal 0-40 M1 for the other Audi we have. Now they both get the same stuff. At one point I was using the same 0-40 in the other car too, but the damn thing kept eating it up like no tomorrow. The 5-40 for some reason wasn't quite as bad.

got another 8000km on the car so due for my 16,000km service. Will be getting an engine oil sample for anyone who is intrested in the report.

I used Mobil 1 0w40 Euro blend.... took me 2 days of tourning around my town visiting every damn car shop or parts store to find enough haha. My wal mart which is the cheapest place to find synthetic oil in town doesnt carry the 0w40.

Just to throw it out there, would the community be intrested in some comparrison of oil types? or has this already been done? (i never searched) I get unlimited oil sample tests for free so can easily switch oil brands for a service or two and compare how all our favourite oils stack up against each other.

Side note my car is beat to shit every day summer/winter in extremely dusty enviorment. Temps ranging from +30C in summer to -50C in the winters. So a good car to choose to test oils lol

Walmart near me is now stocking the 5 quart jugs of Castrol Euro for around $26.

I have been using Motul just because I can get it cheaper than M1 at WalMart.

5w40 or 0w40 are fine. I generally run a 5w40 Castrol per the factory fill.

Speaking of Catrol Euro. I was at the local AutoZone yesterday picking up some detail stuff and noticed they had the Castrol Euro in stock. Pick up a bottle out of curiosity and looked on the back of it. Says "Made in Germany" on it. So, the question I have... is this now the same old green stuff that used to be made back in the day in Germany or not? Not going to buy a bottle just to open and check color, lol. But if anyone is buying it, check the back of the bottle and see if your says "Made in Germany". If it does, what's the color of the oil... Amber or Green?

I use it in my B7 A4. It's amber.

Full synthetic every 5k. Change it often and regularly and use any of the above mentioned or quality oils and you are going to have a very healthy engine. Don't over complicate it with branding... it can be argued to the hills which brand is better... As long as it's a full synthetic at the recommended weight from a reputable manufacture...

I'll agree here, do just check it complies with VW 502 spec on the labeling

Pennzoil Ultra Euro, 5w-40, every 5000k.

Blackstone results have also proven better for me than Mobile 1 0w-40.

Also, after switching, car burns less oil. I sometimes had to put a quart in between oil changes, now I don't even bother as it never actually gets low enough.
