So I have done some research and look through google but did not find anyone who had the PRNDS come on while trying to start up the car. My car would not turn on this morning and the PRNDS was solid red. After shutting the car off two times it finally revived. Did some driving and the lights never came on. This once occured to me about 3 months ago and I wasnt too concerned but now I am starting to think something is slowly going bad. Any ideas? [confused]

It could be your transmission control module (tcm). I had a similar issue a while ago in my A3 where the gears would flash though.

Sounds like a bad TCM. Fairly common on CVTs, no so common on Tiptronics. I think Dave (Öperator) just had this happen to his Tip though. He replaced his tranny as the TCM is nearly as much as a whole unit.

After doing my SPP Tip mod, my PRNDS is solid red, doesnt bother me so im just living with it, but is this really a bad thing? All i did was replace the shift knob so idk how it could have gotten messed up

Doesnt seem like everyone is on the same page. If the TCM was shot im pretty sure the PRNDS would be on consistently as I am driving or going on and off as some of you had experienced.... in this case I am having problems starting up the car as the PRNDS light is solid. Not flashing.

TCM is shot! Simple as that, no matter what the behavior is (and there are more than one)
If you scan the Tranny module, it will confirm that

How much are we talking for a new TCM?

Exactly. My issue was intermittent but the end result was the same. Cost wise, you're probably looking about $1200 (just for the part) or so and it's inside the transmission. :(

Seriously? FML and what causes the TCM to go bad? Rough driving?

It's your TCM as mentioned by others. I had to replace mine a few months back.

Typically, this means that your TCM is wigging out. Luckily there are thousands of CVT B7s to get one from. Or if you are looking to purchase a new one let me know and I can get you pricing.

Jake,
Just for personal knowledge, are the TCM on Tiptronic and CVT the same?
What is a ballpark price in both case?

Nope! It's just the nature of Audi, and it doesn't matter for which transmission or how well you take care of it.

Late reply, but yeh, I replace the whole trans........ only to have whatever gremlin is running wild take out the new one too................
I was just thinking about you the other day....So apparently JHM is working on a way to talk to the transmission through OBD-II.....It probably is a while out, and you may not want to pay to ship your car cross country....but it is one more option.
Would you be willing to try something crazy?
Have you ever had any electrical issues before this?

Very unlikely that they are the same. Completely different configurations: a spline with 7 simlulated gears v. 6 gear auto, no reason to assume they would be the same.
As for pricing, it looks like you can get a reman CVT TCM for about $250 on eBay. I think on Dave's build thread he said that the TCM for the Tip was not much different than the price of the whole trans $1k+.

Somehow I'm getting the impression there's some confusion on your tranny. It is tipronic, based on your profile not CVT I take it. In comparison the tcm are apples to oranges. Cost wise they are the close to 1300ish.
You should get your car scoped and see exactly what trouble codes there are. Just because PRNDS is solid doesn't necessarily mean the tcm is going; it's a fair assessment that's all for now. Have you experienced any other symptoms, engine cut, limp mode, flashing PRNDS etc.? Take a closer look if possible.

The TCM was $2700 from the dealer. I got a used Transmission with 13k on it for under $500 freighted.

How do you know if you have a CVT or a tiptronic? Im looking at this b7 that has the PRNDS light on.

Is it FWD or Quattro? FWD = CVT and Quattro = Tip

I thought it was possible to get a TIP in frontwheel drive.... I could've sworn you had three options for front wheel drive (Stick CVT or TIP) and you simply couldn't get the CVT in AWD

According to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_A4#Transmissions
Quattro was Tiptronic only, CVT was FWD.

This. If it's FWD and automatic, it's a CVT. They call it Multitronic.
