Need some ideas here. Engine started making a clattering noise like a diesel around the first of the year, so I came on here and decided to replace the cam chain and tensioner based on what people were suggesting. That didn't change it and now it's getting louder. Just hoping for some input/ideas on where to go next. Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts.[evilmad]
Replaced since owned (engine wise):
T-belt/water pump, etc.
Cam chain/tensioner
High pressure fuel pump cam follower

My thought was "cam chain tensioner" before reading your message, now I'm curious. I also have some issue in this area. And my 1st thought was to replace the CCT (see my other thread (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/596411-Cam-chain-tensioner-possible-issue-advice-needed)). I didn't do it yet, just looking at some advice...
Now, questions... Can you hear the diesel like engine noise while driving, or is it only at idle?? Any weird rattle when starting the engine?

Do something for me. If you increase the rpms does the noise get louder or faster sounding?

Only at idle, only after warm-up. Apparently any load is enough to quiet it down. Nothing out of the ordinary at initial start-up, warm or cold.
Was considering CCT as well Acme, may be my next step.

If they get faster sounding what does that mean? Tia

Like the noise speeds up. I had the same issue from there. Thinking head gasket in my case.

CCT = cam chain tensioner. You already did that, no?

Yes, my mistake, I did replace that. I meant the cam actuator on the rear of the intake cam that's in the aluminum housing at the rear of the head, not sure what Audi calls it.

The cam adjuster right?

Right. VVT on Toyota, Vanos on BMW, etc.

Got a friend suggesting that it could be chain slack from poor oil pressure to the tensioner from a weak pump or restricted passage since it quiets down with any RPM. Sounds reasonable, but not sure how to cure if the passage is restricted. Any thoughts?

Subbing this thread to see how your situation pans out. I have a similar noise coming from the rear of my engine but I haven't yet replaced the cam chain and tensioner.

Mine and my moms car do this. Both b7's. I thought it was just the noise of the engine.
