View Full Version : ST Coilovers or Just Replace the Shock..

So at 120k miles, my right rear shock is leaking, enough so that I can feel a difference when I push down on that corner.
I wanted to put in coils, but it really wasn't in the plan until next summer. Now that I'm looking at replacing shocks though I'm thinking now might be the right time.
I have to do both rears at the same time right? So that's like $200. My concern is if I do that, how much longer till the front goes? Then its $500 total.. At that point I should've just done the $650 for STs.
I can't really decide, what do you guys think?

I believe the shocks and struts are the same[up]. The springs mite be different because of the weight difference[confused]. I know when I placed my order with Chris @ 1552 they do ask on the order form if its a Avant or sedan and quattro or fwd

Spring rates will be different - due to the different weights of the vehicles. That's why it also matters if your car is quattro or not (because quattro adds weight). Keep us posted.

Just a rear shock swap on both sides should be fine right? My springs are fine, the one shock is just starting to leak.
Man if I had more money I'd just do the STs and all. Anyone in for a bank heist?!

You are being such a vagina. Get st's from chris. You will get them and be in the best mood ever. You think getting a tune will make the car more fun, start taking turns around corners on nonboat suspension and you will be having a blast.

Agreed. Just like in Gran Turismo, you do suspension first, then worry about the rest.

No offense VCE, but OP, do it right the first time.
I did my STs a few months back and I scrapped my stock suspension. It had 80k on it and while there may have been life left, it wasn't worth it for me to box and sell. IMO putting a used stock suspension on your car is only good if it has very low miles on it or you're trading it in and want to pull your coilovers off to use again or sell.

His set only has 40k! Idk I'd just rather grab a HFC, and then work on maintenance this summer. I can't justify a $650 mod when there's still other things to be done. For example, a bent wheel, and a clunk over bumps. Not to mention original control arms and clutch that will probably need to be done in the next year or so hahah fuck

Bent wheel is easy if oem[up]. Most rim places will do an exchange for a recondition one for about $100.00 bux[drool]. The clunking over bumps noise is probably upper control arms. Here's a set that a member is selling new for

Hahah dude you're a classifieds pro. Pm'd that guy about the HFC. My control arms seem pretty tight though! I'm thinking my subframe bolts may be loose. Or an exhaust hanger loose. Sometimes its a clunk. Other times its a clunky rattle?

I found the ST's on Amazon for 735+ tax putting them at 802 and free shipping w/Amazon Prime. I also have an Amazon Rewards Card which gets me 3% back (~$24), so I'm looking at ~$778 from Amazon w/2 day shipping. I verified the part number, but feel a little uneasy about ordering some coilovers from Amazon lol... They've never let me down before, and as long as the part # is right and the item is new/undamaged, I shouldn't have anything to worry about right? I'm still waiting to hear back from Chris first though.

I lived thru similar -- in my day it was all my money into a 2002 , between school, living, and car, bored motor, mod'ed wide tires , lowered, LOUD exhaust, roll cage , nice paint-- the police loved it and I could park in the faculty "executive" parking , 'campus police left it alone (people's republic of Berkeley)
Anyway-- over in one of the other suspension strings a guy nailed it: go fast first with suspension and brakes / power later .

I installed my ST last December[up]. My car had about 180K then. I have about [drive]195K on it now. I haven't noticed any abnormal wear on the stock suspension. But a complete control arm kit was replaced 2 years prior me owning vehicle according to the Audi Maintenance records. But I have the ST on the[wrench] highest setting. So it was only about a 1 inch drop for me

I installed my STs at 195k miles and did a control arm kit at the same time as well. I am at 205k miles now with no issues and I am also at about the highest setting. Still running the OEM axles. If your controls arms are going the STs will not speed them up much more than normal. And there is only a few days left to get in on the $100 mail in rebate on the STs.

They are galvanized and have polycarbonate adjusters so they don't really seize. I haven't had any issues or people with problems with corrosion. Still advisable to spray with something and clean in the spring and run the adjusters up and down.

I didn't do anything special to mine and they survived a rather nasty New England winter just fine. Just spray some form of lube on the threads and wash off the heavy grime every once in a while and you'll be fine.
