View Full Version : car threw some fault codes while on track - misfire, cam timing

In the interest of transparency, the computer logged two faults the last two times I went out on track (January 12 and March 1). I can't tell if the timestamps are in GMT, because I wasn't on track at 6:49 AM although I was awake and likely driving to the track. I also wouldn't have been on track at 12:46 PM but my car could have been on the dyno at that particular time.

The tricky part about this is I haven't used the car hardly at all in the last few months. The first reading from Jan was @ 33,408 miles and the second was @ 34,245 miles. I literally drove the car home, parked it for a month or two, drove it to the shop for a checkup, and drove it to another track.

At the least it seems like I should do a tune up and replace the air filter. Anything else I should do here?

wonder if its just the tune glitching when switching from pump to race gas and trying to adapt.

Sorry, I couldn't help it. You know everyone's going to go loose on this. lol

Now that I got that out of my system, pull the plugs and take a look at them. See just how badly white they may be from that "hot tune" of yours. Change if necessary even if you're only at 30k on the originals. Maybe even a step colder if they aren't the proper color. If they are, you have your answer. Some fuel system cleaner probably wouldn't hurt either to clean the injectors, etc. It's not all about just clean valves ya know.

The camshaft error happened at a completely different time. You got a CEL in the dash, right? I'd think fault priority 2 would do that. I wouldn't trust the date/time stamps. Clear codes and see if they return, certainly not good but I'd assume you're fine. Maybe you need to replace spark plugs?

No CEL. This is all under the covers stuff. These might have been thrown at the boundary when I switched tunes. Again, I can't tell with the GMT and DST.

Pull the spark plugs and inspect. Also, drive the car for an hour once a week. If no codes come back, good. Otherwise, take it to a pro. Too bad it didn't store rpm.

I think it might be nothing but the car sitting idle for a while.

A misfire like what you have presented, typically takes place on startup. Totally benign and nothing to cause an alarm.
