I've read some threads about fuel gauges not working, but none seem to have the same problem.

My fuel gauge seems to work intermittently.
One second it'll read 1/2, then empty, then 3/8, then empty, then 5/8, then 1/8, ect...

Any ideas? I've heard of the fuel sending unit being corroded and intermittently working but, i don't understand how it could read all different fuel levels when the float is in one place...

The sending unit is just a simple electronic gauge, I've heard the unit can be repaired by cleaning the electrical contacts. I was looking for some confirmation of this

You can try it that way if you'd like if you are short on cash but it would be better to just instal a new one. That's what I'd personally do. It seems like too much trouble to go through when you can just replace the whole unit

The way the sending unit works is there's a float attached to an arm. As the arm goes up and down it makes different contact points through out its "arch", the wire for this often becomes corroded and wears away which will give an erratic signal.

Below is a picture of the wire that causes all the havoc.

Some people have taken the wire from an old speaker (the one that powers the cone) and re solder a section in as a temporary fix. Sometimes this works sometimes it doesn't

A few other options would be to find a used one in better shape or just replace it with a new one.

We have new fuel sending units below.
