Is there any cheap way to do VCDS? Like just downloading the software and using a elm327 to link to the car?

If a $5 cable is too expensive for you, you should probably consider a corolla.

I tried using an elm327 Bluetooth OBD2 adapter with VCDS and others and couldn't get it to work. The adapter works perfectly fine with the Torque app on my phone. Depending on what you want to do it could be a cheap alternative, $4 for the app and $20 for a Bluetooth adapter.

elm 327 will not work with vag com, you need a kkl cable, I bought a cheapo cable off ebay for reading codes and coding my windows and have a few local friends with the full version if I need it to do more complicated things

I am having a hell of a time getting my cheapo VCDS cable to work with my Win7 64bit. I got it to work in the past but I did a clean install and this time no go.

Just make sure that the OBD2 cable or bluetooth donggle is routed through a COM port in your devices in the control panel. I guess when I installed it I somehow got the full version from a link my friend sent, and I'm pretty sure someone just asked about VCDS in another thread.

Win 7 64 needs to run a lot of legacy programs such as that in compatibility mode as well as an Administrator.

Right click the EXE and select Windows xp mode and save it by hitting OK, then right click that EXE and select run as an administrator. I haven't tried it but I have run in older software that this worked for.
