So I decided to make a new thread for my 2014 build since my original thread (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/505784-My-first-Audi-2001-5-S4-with-Custom-Single-Turbo-setup) exploded into such a huge thread.

Currently a work in progress but here's the recipe so far (At least what I can tell you ;-))

3.0 Stroker Engine:
JE 83MM FSR Pistons - 10:1 Compression Ratio
JE Tool Steel Wrist Pins
Integrated Engineering Rods
ARP 625+ Custom Aged Rod Bolts
ARP Custom Main Studs
CNC Ported 2.7 Cylinder Heads
+1MM Supertech Intake Valves
+1MM Supertech Inconel Exhaust Valves
Supertech Solid Lifters
LOBA Solid Lifter Cams
83.5MM Head Gaskets

Billet Dry Sump Oil Pan w. Integrated Girdle
Peterson 4 Stage Dry Sump Pump

Borg Warner EFR 9180 Turbo w 1.05 AR T4 Exhaust Housing
Quick Spool Valve

Direct Port Nitrous

Megasquirt 3 Standalone Engine Management System

There's more but I forget right now... lol

Now some pretty pics for you to enjoy for now...

FSR pistons. Have an assymetrical design for reduced friction and weight.
My rod and piston combo is lighter than stock by quite a lot.

I think you should do a sponsorship deal with ppg since they are in development of awd 01E's. I'm sure they would give you a shot.

Do you think this would be beneficial to me? 8374 divided t4 3L If so, what could I really expect? I current expect to have close to 30 psi by 3500. Does the use of this make it any more complicated to tune? Any risks at all with the use of this?

spd579

Would someone please enlighten me on how the quick spool valve works?

"The Quick Spool Valve has a butterfly valve blocking a scroll of the divided turbo housing, making the turbo act as if it were a smaller turbo. All the exhaust energy is routed through half the turbine housing, causing the turbo to spool at a much more rapid rate. In other words, the spool valve is essentially "halving" the turbine A/R when the valve is closed, and then you get close to full A/R when it is opened. For example lets say you have a .86 A/R 76GTS turbo. With the quick spool valve operating, at lower rpm's it acts like a turbo with a .43 A/R housing, which means it spools very quickly, shifting the power band downward on the curve and allowing for much quicker build up of hp and torque! When the valve opens, you end up with about 95%+ of your total A/R available and full boost."

Essentially makes your turbo small(k03ish) at low RPM for better spool then after it's built up boost makes it a large turbo(gt99ish).

im curious to see how the afr turbo performs and also very curious to see what gains you will achieve with your cnc'd heads

the quick spool valve is pretty cool...almost like a VGT turbo on a diesel....just sucks when the quick spool valve fucks up

From what I have seen the quick spool valve gets you on boost about 400-500rpms sooner...your car should really move.

Does Megasquirt have can bus control?

Im not a fan of the QS Valve at all. Burnt up 2 different turbos on my built stroker supra. Its not a uncommon thing behind the scenes, just no one really talks about it. The car drove way better with out it on. I dont know how far the advancements have come in the B5S4 platform since I left but, Can you do boost off the line or rolling boost. Have both those in my built big turbo GTR, and they help leaps and bounds.

I've heard this quite often. Although it seems like a good idea in theory, I'd be damn scared to run it due to potentially flying apart (especially at that power level) and taking out that wonderful EFR turbo.

I'd rather just run a twin-scroll manifold and a properly sized exhaust housing. I doubt the difference would be more then 200-300rpm if that.

So my Quick Spool Valve arrived...
I have to say I was a little let down with the quality. The flange surfaces are not flat - they look like someone used an angle grinder or a 50 year old belt grinder to surface them...
I will be forced to take it apart and machine it on a cnc machine... ugh.
Once again I should have made my own... Grrrr

It will still save you time over building one from scratch. But the cost is the killer, that thing should be mint for what you paid considering how simple that thing is to make...

Hopefully the metallurgy is better than the physical appearance[o_o]

I would still replace wastegate on that thing, Get a good working one from K03/k04 turbo or some tial stuff, you know it will last [:)]

And look at the surface of that plate, I don't think there is a gasket in existence that would seal such roughness.

That would be so simple to make......also why use screws to attach the flap on the shaft?? Why not just weld it?? I assume in case you need to service it? but why not just buy another if it needs servicing?

Nice build Lee!! Kudos to you! If you want to optimize that flange, you should consider to profile the leading edge in the middle of the flange to help keep exhaust manifold speed air speed to a maximum.. Think of the flange as more of a vane nozzle. We're not talking about huge number gains here (lol), but optimizing every little bit of the equation helps IMO!

Keep up the good work!

The diesel block has a deck that is a lot taller... so it would require not only custom rods but also different intake.
It's not impossible I've just put it on hold for now until I could get some rods...

That happened too on his last motor.
IIRC, these are his motor failures:

Motor 1 - timing advance mishap
Motor 2 - wrist pin sheared
Motor 3 - block cracked/broke center main webs, AE block
Motor 4 - RS4 piston cracked in half, later found out BF block cracked main web

lets be honest....nearly any aftermarket rod will do in our motors unless you're planning to go 800+ whp and even at that I've seen Chinese rods on 4 bangers with the same H beam design hold 200hp+ per rod. 200x6 = 1200 hp for us

Even with the QSV it won't spool that quick ha.
I'd expect full boost around 4500 to 5000rpm. With a 4000rpm wide power band minimum.

his car is down for the count and probably won't be available for the Audi Olympics until next year.
I was at the waterfest to witness your 10.6 pass and I'm pretty sure that Britishturbo would be a fool to wager money on a race against your automatic Rs7.

It seems like you you are able to run high 10's consecutively, while British's car has probably ran 10's once. If your car was stick, a race between you guys would be a better matched competition.

He'll probably accept, but it more than likely will never happen. If you would like to run an Audi that runs 12.1 and is willing to give it a 1 sec start, I think I can make it happen.

And Lee, I would also like to know if you use a Torque Plate when you bore the block ?
Thanks

^ You always use a torque plate when boring

You don't use a Torque Plate when boring, you use one when honing the block to final size after boring.

Hi Lee, I would like to know if running 10:1 Compression Ratio will this make your turbo spool sooner ? and also what boost are you going to
be pushing with this new setup ?

Im asking this because im looking at JE pistons for my single turbo s4, im stuck on what i want the compression ratio to be [headbang]

thanks

You should better leave that decision for your engine builder/tuner in your case.

10:1 will not be my final compression ratio.
Compression helps more with off boost power than spool, giving the appearance if less lag.

Your compression ratio should be guided more by what fuel you plan to run than anything.
