View Full Version : my K04 journey is complete... now looking at hfc/downpipe

With help from the Audizine think tank, my k04 runs amazing with zero issues, and trust me, I drove this thing hard. Zero misfires!! So for that u thank you all.
My next upgrade is going to be a hfc/downpipe.
Now I'm not here to ask which is best cuz I'm sure that's beaten to death, but I am curious if it would REQUIRE new software? And how that would work with a flashfor k04 already in there?
Currently I'm stayin away from rai cuz of the quality control issues I've read about. I'd prefer to get a hfc/downpipe combo so currently I'm looking at the unitronic version. (Again, not asking what's better, just laying down my train of thought)
I saw the jhm catpipe and I got confused. It says it has an oem cat on it but still refers to it as a hfc? Can someone clear up this up?

Autocorrect, I assume?
So you have a k04 with a stock cat? What tuning are you using?

I say this all the time on here, but i think by far the best solution to performance vs. emissions is to get a test pipe because they are dirt cheap, and spend the $2-300 you saved at a shop to swap it out for the one day you do your emissions test every 2-3 years.
Or do it yourself (its 4 bolts on the turbo 3 bolts on the catback if i'm not mistaken, even if you took TEN MINUTES per bolt you could do it in 2 hours) and then, go out and spend $2-300 on hookers and blow

No worries, I answered the phone and did not see that I left it out. You do not need to have software to run our Test Pipe or HFC. This is because the J-Bung we use will prevent a CEL. (If that was your concern)
As for the other question, that part of the product page is explain the exhaust system, so people who don't understand what a test pipe/hfc/OEM cat belongs on the car.
We do NOT use an OEM cat on our HFC system.
Hope that helps!

You're misunderstanding that statement. He's simply saying that that small section of the exhaust is what he is talking about. The OEM cat comes out and that section of the exhaust is replaced by either a test pipe or a HFC. The JHM HFC is not the same as the OEM cat.

Hey Jake, any clue if your HFC passes smog in CA? I know that 034 claims theirs does.

If you can get around visual then you should have no issue. This is the same HFC that we use in our RS4 and S4 applications and we/customers have been passing with no problems for years!

I have 034 and have no issues with it, really nice craftsmanship and quality. If I had to do it again I would probably go JHM, want to support a company that trolls our forums more and they seem to be coming out with some really cool solutions.
Looks like the real difference is 034 uses a 250 cell and JHM uses a 300 cell, so that is something to take into consideration when considering flow vs emissions. Both look to be as much 3" as they can.

I thought the same thing with mine when I did it. 6-8 hours later, and 1AM in the morning I finished. Thought I would get it done before dark lol.

are you telling me it took you 6-8 hours?? ONE HOUR per bolt? and that's a suspiciously long range of accuracy of 2 hours, lol. you did something wrong, or you passed out from the beer for 5 hours in between and didn't realize it...
I'm assuming you didn't use PB Blaster, or you don't have the right tools. stock bolts can be hard to break, but if you are prepared you will be fine... either way you can use the money you saved on the pipe, at a shop.

The big issue I ran into when doing mine was the clearance, if you are lowered you gotta get your car pretty high before you can slide the dp/hfc assembly out together. Also my clamp that goes from the dp to the cat back was rusted so I had to cut it off and replace it with a better piece.

Here you go, nice piece, good quality. They even have the J pipe you can add to help not throw any CEL for the O2 sensor

its a secondary piece that screws in. Gives you the option to have it or not.

Are you sure? All I see is the option for an additional bung. Not a j-bung. They are two different things.
did someone say high flow cat?

I have a CTS Turbo test pipe. I can tell you that as much as I like the sound it provides, the smell and increase in visible exhaust smoke output has me clamoring for an HFC. I hate getting the evil eye from 'rice jockeys' at the gas station when I pull in. JHM is getting my business when Uncle Sam sends me back my taxes.

Jake; I was just told your test pipe will not fit a K04 kit from another turbo supplier. Your website says it'll fit a stock K03 without an issue. Can you confirm they'll fit a K04 as well, please?
I'm sorry if this has been asked a million times before. It's a challenge to search from a mobile phone, and I'm a fairly new B7 concert from the MKIV TDI community.
Thanks.

What K04 and tune do you have?

I don't have a K04 yet. I'm running an APR stage one, but have an HPFP and S3 injectors to install. I'm asking because I don't want to buy a test pipe, then have it not fit a K04 later, or have a spare.
I was asking about the CTS k04 kit, originally.

I run a cts kit and it comes with a testpipe or HFC, you get to pick. It wont fit any testpipes or HFCs made for a K03.
EDIT: I would also look into getting GIAC's K04 tune

CTS uses a S3 turbo modified for the B7. Thier kit specifies that you use the supplied test pipe in the kit[wrench] because its modified exhaust flange to bolt up to the exhaust manifold.
Ive heard great reviews about UM KO4 tune [up].

FWIW, I would get any 3" HFC and a whichever downpipe you prefer, but I would get a V-band on the connecting flange to make taking it off easier if you have to for any reason down the road and to minimize any chance of leaks.
