This is a bit of a long story but I think it's worth the read...

A couple weeks ago I started getting a CEL in my 2005.5 6 speed manual B7 with 85K+ miles on it. Car has a GIAC tune but is pretty much stock as far as performance mods. Never had any major issues with the car. In fact I love this car and have held onto it longer then I usually do because I just love it so much. Anyway, I threw a code for a camshaft sensor. I also noticed it was idling a bit rough as the tach seemed to move just a bit during idle. Nothing that noticeable but more then usual. I also began to hear a bit of noise from the engine compartment. It sounded a bit like a diesel. As for performance, it seemed to be fine. It still pulled hard and didn't notice any sounds or vibrations at highway speeds. I did take it a bit easy since it was still throwing a CEL but it was normal daily driving. Accelerating hard for merging on the highway and such.

Of course I did a search on Audizine and saw several references to the cam follower and how this noise can be related to that issue. My first thought was maybe this is what is causing the CEL and the noise. I also read the Audi has extended the warranty to 10 years or 120K for replacing this part due to the many documented issues it has had with the part.

So I immediately called my service rep at my local dealership. His name is Josh. Josh knows the history of my car and how well I take care of it. I told him my thoughts about the cam follower and he assured me he would look into it. The dealership gave me the usual loaner car....this time a 2014 A4 S-Line with Premium package. Very nice ride but I did miss my manual transmission.

Josh called me later in the day to tell me that the issue is not the cam follower. The problem is a solenoid and camshaft sensor...forget exactly which one...anyway, said it would cost about $400 with parts and labor and everything should be fine. I can come pick up my car tomorrow once the part arrives and they install it.

I told Josh to make sure to give it a good test drive and make sure this is in fact the culprit. I don't want a CEL coming on after I leave the dealership. Josh assured me he would have his service manager give it a spirited drive to make sure all checked out.

So the next day comes and Josh gives me a call. Said that they found some issues. After installing the sensor they realized it was more then that. The cam follower was indeed bad. They inspected the cam and found some metal shavings. Now they had to replace the cam follower, HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump), the camshaft and a couple other things that I didn't write down. Parts wouldn't be in for a day or two so I had to continue in the loaner through the weekend. Oh gee...what a bummer, you mean I need to drive this 2014 around more? A good deal for me.
Best part is Josh said everything would be covered due to the problem with the cam follower and that they were documenting everything with pictures and have contacted AoA about the issue to make sure it is taken care of. I was so relieved I didn't have this huge repair bill to worry about.

Tuesday or Wednesday of this week the parts arrived. Josh calls me up to say they found another issue. More damage on the back side of the engine. "They have to replace another part which is on order and will be here on Thursday. I should have my car back on Friday." Again, no cost to me!!!

So this is the part where you shake your head in amazement.

Thursday afternoon (yesterday), Josh calls to give me more news. Looks like they found more damage due to the cam follower failure. My heads were a bit scorched and more metal found in the engine. They contacted AoA about the new findings. AoA told the dealership to give me a whole NEW engine!!! I almost crapped myself. My car had 85K+ miles on it now it's getting a new engine. Josh stated that with all this damage who knows what this did to the engine. He also said normally AoA will replace with a factory refurb or reconditioned engine but due to the model they no longer have any of those so they are sending me a brand spanking NEW engine with all the trimmings. Josh told me they have seen several other cars with this issue but never to this extent. I get to keep the loaner for another week until it arrives form Germany and they get it installed.

I cannot begin to tell you how awesome my dealership is. I didn't even have to ask for anything...they just do it and make sure it is done right! I know many/most people have issues with their dealers and the costs associated with service. However, when they do their job right they are amazing and second to none. I can't believe how much they have gone to bat for me with AoA to make sure I am taken care of.

Thanks Josh, Sun Motors in Mechanicsburg, PA and especially Audi of America for keeping this loyal Audi owner a long time loyal Audi owner. I know I won't be switching brands anytime soon.

That's so great to read/hear! My 05.5 is pushing 91K miles and, as far as I know, is on the original CF. I had a leaking HPFP that my aftermarket vehicle service contract replaced (and bc they're cheapasses they probably wouldn't pay for the CF) but other than that, I assume everything is original from new. I also have an awesome dealer here in IL and hope if something like this comes up, they follow Sun Motors example!

Wow that's awesome, congrats on the new engine. Just goes to show how much damage that little cam follower can do.

Yes, it makes a nice change from the typical negative stories about dealers / AoA.

OP, I also got great news this morning that AoA will be replacing my motor due to a bad follower, camshaft, and fuel pump. The internals were scored, and they found metal shards in my oil pan. Unfortunately for me, my motor won't be brand spanking new, but new enough. According to the tech, it will be a used casing with all brand new internals, but still 0 miles on the clock. The original motor had 105k, and I'm debating on replacing the clutch since the motor will be pulled anyways. I'm glad they're doing this for us, because just like you, I love this car too much. HAPPY FRIDAY TO US![:D]

Keep in mind it is in the best interest of the dealer to get as much replaced under warranty and recall as possible...they are reimbursed by audi of america for the work...so maybe dont be as surprised as you think.

and it went on warranty even with Giac chip? You,re lucky, or you have a good dealer. My dealer told me that if they connect the car to the code reader, audi will know that i am chipped. I got two recall becaus ethe dealer didn't connect it to the audi code reader, but he told me i had to forget about the third recall as they will know that i'm chipped and i'll have to pay from everything.
Go buy a lottery ticket, you are lucky.

My local dealer wont even give a loaner unless the car is within the 50,000 mile or 4 years factory warranty. Basically they tell me to go across the street and get a rental. I am soooooo tempted to call them out on it when my local BMW gives loaners to ya even if your car is 10 yrs old! [headbang]

I am VERY impressed by your dealer. Makes me hate mine. I guess that's why I never go to them anymore.

Dumb question but if I'm not the original owner of the car, could the 120k 10 yr CF warranty still be valid? Im gonna check mine out soon and if its bad take pictures and bring it to the dealership.

But thats freaking awesome man, I'd be so happy haha

My local stealership gave me a 2013 Q5 for a day while the were doing free recalls on my '06 A4. I think its up to the individual dealership.

The first thing I did after buying mine was take it to the dealership for all the free warranty work, which included the cam follower and all related parts. Saved me a bundle of cash!

PCV, I think a few sensors, I don't remember everything. When you go to the Audi dealer, sit down with the advisor and have him/her go through their book of warranty/recall/TSBs with you. They'll run your VIN and do all the work required.

Just went there, they said something would need to break or be worn down for the warranty to apply, so I think I'll just have them do an hour of diagnostics to see if its all worn (which I hope it is ha)

I told the dealership I would pay for the diagnostic - which I didn't have to do once they discovered the trashed cam follower.

My car died at 57k, 2nd owner, 1st owner did almost all maintenance at Audi and then when I ended up there for the fix, best I could get out of them and AoA was a long block refurb from Germany that set me back $3.8k. Consider yourself lucky my friend, and stay loyal to those guys for a long time. I feel fortunate enough that as the 2nd owner, and without a CPO and not having bought anything from my dealer before they were still able to give me almost a brand new engine for basically cost... but I still to this day (1 1/2 years later and 20k miles) have a REAL bad taste in my mouth and savings from AoA and my dealership not fixing the entire problem I shouldn't have had in the first place. What I've come to realize and make peace with is that these are in fact high-quality and high-performance engines, and shit does happen. I had never bought a used performance type car before without a CPO warranty, and I know now that in the future I will always get one. I guess where I'm going with this is I'm happy for you and it's nice to see they care even though they didn't care as much for me as you ;-) Cheers mate!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune red_eh and others. I know I am very fortunate and my dealership may be a rare breed among many out there. I wish everybody had the same luck I had in this case. Trust me, my luck is not so great most of the time. I never come out on the winning side. However, my dealership takes considerable pride in going above and beyond to make every customer feel like royalty. Even when they gave me the loaner, they apologized for it not being detailed and perfectly clean. The weather here is horrible in PA with snow and salt all over the roads. No way it can stay clean. Even then the car looked pretty clean to me. I told them no problem but thanks for bringing it to my attention. Looking forward to getting my car back. Thanks for the comments and if you haven't done so yet....get that CF checked [;)]

The CPO warranties for the most part not worth it. If they're selling you one--ask yourself--are they doing so because they plan on losing money or making money. A better plan is to take that CPO money and put it aside every month for a fund for repairs. And besides wrenching on your own car (if time, $$ and tools are avail) is to learn where to pickup good parts for cheap--as in used longblock for $1500 on the open market or thru places like www.car-part.com --those places can save you thousands over dealer charges. There's always a way to save a dolla and a cent.
