Plastidip window trim

I'm looked change my chrome window trim on my Quartz Grey B7 to Black and I was suggested to look into plastidip versus a vinyl wrap or replacing the trim all together. Has anyone and any luck with this in he past?

Window trim done with 3M 1080 wrap is not that hard to but requires patience. I just did mine and it came out great. Before that I tried to dip it and it didn't compare to the wrap. Use 3M 1080 flat black and if you own an Avant as I do, you'll need a contiguous 10' hunk of vinyl to do the top piece.
If I had the money, I would have the trim professionally sanded and painted - but I don't want to part with it.

I plasti dipped my front chrome grille trim and Audi badge and haven't had any issues with it. I even plasti dipped the grille and the filler plate with clear plasti dip to protect from chipping.

Ive been running shadowline gloss black trim vinyl for a little over 2 years, still holding up nice.

Plasti-dip= nightmare! Could not remove all of it it flaked in some spots didn't look smooth. Apparently car needs to be in a paint booth for it to actually look perfect. I wouldn't use it again. I'd pay to have professional paint it. Or vinyl

I didn't realize window trims are difficult to dip. I haven't done it so I can't speak on it.

Can you just paint the widow trim a flat black. Just give it a light sanding first perhaps? Ive been thinking of plasti dipping mine as well.

My plate filler and Podi gauge pod are dipped and have held up well, but I think I'll be using vinyl wrap for the window trim.

I was considering just painting mine too (window trim) but just incase I ever decide to sell the car, I can always take the vinyl wrap off. I'm looking to go matte black for trim because I'm replacing the grill which is all black.

Both dipping and wrapping are easy but take time and require that you do it correctly. I have had dip on my car that looked great and lasted. I currently have wrapped trim and I like it, lasted for about a year now. Here is what I used...

Just be aware that ShadowLine will be the worst pain the in ass to take off that you have ever experienced and that's not an exaggeration. I don't know if 3M is easier or not. I did matt ShadowLine and it was tough at first but once I calmed down from my initial rage, the rest went on quickly. I have do do mine over again and I think I'm just going to go over the top of the matt with gloss shadow line. Product holds up really well, but I have a spot or two where it got knicked and you can see a tiny bit of chrome. It would be brutal to take it off, so I'm just going over the top.

I plastidipped mine a year and a half ago. It held up pretty good, but it is really starting to dull and stain in areas. I wouldn't do it again in my honest opinion. I ordered some shadowline gloss back around christmas and just waiting for the weather to warm up so I can put it on.

A buddy of mine did it on his B6 S4 and actually came out really nice. He has professional painting experience so it could also be why it came out so well. I know he took a good amount of time just prepping the surface and taping off the surrounding areas to protect from over spray. Laid on a few decently thick coats letting it set up a bit between and finished it off with a semi heavy coat.

If you rush it you can obviously get terrible outcomes so just take your time. [up]

For what it's worth I agree that the best cost to quality option for window trim is vinyl. I had a guy do my sedan for $125 and he even did the little chrome piece on the rear bumper without asking! Turned out great, should last quite a while without any issues. He offered to do the grille for $80 but I declined as I wanted to plastidip that... The plastidipped grille looks great but if I were to do it again I would have paid him the $80!!

i just ordered some 3m 1080 matte black vinyl, gonna attempt to install it cleanly on the window trim, and will report back here when said project is finished
