View Full Version : I've been searching and cannot find an answer. P0011 - about the N205

I was merging on to the freeway last night and noticed the MIL illuminated. I got off the freeway at the next exit and drove the slower highway to the nearest dealer after stopping at a gas station for a quick peak around the car and a listen. Seemed safe to continue so on I went, all the while it was behaving normally. I stopped at the dealer and they wanted a minimum of $120 to look at it. (My dealer wouldn't do that, they are friendlier) So I left and went to Autozone to get the code pulled. P0011 cam timing advanced on bank 1 or something like that. Do my research while chowing down at Culver's and decide that the most common answer is the best place to start. Here's my question: If I order a N205 valve will it be easy to access and swap out myself? I cannot find a DIY for this so I have to assume those that say they have changed theirs have had a mechanic do it. My particular challenge will be that I do not have a garage/ramps/lift to work in so a warmish day and a hood popped open will be my workspace. Is this possible? Will I need special tools?
Local dealer is scheduled to diagnose the car Thursday morning. I would like to try this first if possible. If I had access to a vag-com I would test the N205 before ordering.
Love the car so far even though I'm dealing with an engine light a month-and-a-half after purchase.
Thanks!

The N205 valve is right on top of the valve cover at the back near the firewall It sticks out really hard to miss. It's to T-20 star bolts (I think I don't really remember the size) BTW I had this same code and it turned out to be a bad timing chain tensioner I ended up pulling the head to do it. Though I do believe that if you are under 121xxx miles you are under warranty for that but I'm not entirely sure. Good luck!

I just did a couple threads on this within the past couple days.... Change your N205 and problem fixed, I have no car skills at all and did it in 10 mins

I assume he means the extended cam warranty I keep hearing about. I have not been able to confirm this myself yet. I have also heard my 2008 is not included in the extended warranty group.

N205 was changed and within a 1/2 hour the light came back on... Goes to the dealer again tomorrow.

It also may be a bad tensioner for the belt or the cam sensor

I cleared my code like 4 or 5 days ago and it hasn't come back yet. Hoping it was the cold. I'm gonna still replace the N205 and do an oil change just for save measure.
Hopefully everything works out for you.

I know this is a stretch. How is your cam follower? Check that make sure it is all good. Try and engine flush and an oil change and see if that helps.

I just purchased the car a month ago and have not yet had an oil change due. I planned on getting the cam follower inspected with the next oil change. If I suggest anything to the Service Adviser it will most likely be to check the TSB related to low oil pressure from a plugged oil inlet strainer. Possibly the cam sensor (kinda pricey) as both of these seem to be common causes for the code. Oil inlet possibly more so than the cam sensor since I am only throwing one code and not a bevy of codes.
Meanwhile, even though I am no longer under Audi warranty, I will be trying to talk my service adviser in to letting me use the service car (loaner). It is a S4 or S5 instead of the typical A3/Q7.

I'm wondering what the repair turned out to be for your P0011 code. I have the same code and noticed a louder metallic ticking type sound at idle. I know it's not the cam follower or jumped tooth on cam belt. I'm waiting on a cam position sensor and not driving the car.

Actually, the N205 may have been it after all. I have not been back to the dealer yet but I have not seen the light return for a few weeks. A week (maybe) after the N205 was replaced I went to my car stereo install. The car sat in a heated garage with the battery disconnected for 6-8 hours. When it was reconnected the light was not on anymore and has not returned but once and that was reset right away. I have not had that warning light since. Now I just need to get rid of the TPMS light, that module is defective.

My car threw this same code tonight. I thought there was a ticking during warmup that sounded abnormal but I attributed it to the single digit temperatures outside. Did you end up getting your issue fixed?

I got this code this week too, but it comes and goes. I live in South Cali so the weather is warm.
I heard sometimes it has to do with the oil being low, or being old.
I'm doing an oil change on Sunday and if it doesn't fix it I guess I'll replace the N205.

Update! Code came back so I scheduled a cleaning of the oil inlet tube. Turns out is is plugged with what remained of a destroyed cam follower. $1700 later I should be back in business. But I may not make it to get the tune I had been planning on. [headbang]

Further update: worse than they originally thought, new engine needed!

Why did they determine new engine?

Little metal bits from the follower are in the oil and have made it pretty far internally. Lots of scoring just from the parts that have been pulled such as the camshafts and journals. Can see the oil in the block headed down the tube to cylinder #3 (or #2 can't remember) clogged with shiny bits.
