View Full Version : B7 to B8 Conversion

I love my B7 but I've always liked the aggressive look of B8 front bumper and the LED DRL. Since I can't afford to just go out and buy one, I did what most DIY warriors on this forum would do - consider B7 to B8 conversion kit. The closest thing I found was $1200+ bumper from Hoffel and cheap headlights off eBay with "accent" LED eyebrow - time for home brew conversion haha. This project was inspired by Felon who combined B8 and B7 bumpers together to create a custom bumper.

BEFORE: Here is my stock 2006 B7 - It is very dirty covered with paint chips on the front.

AFTER: With B8 front end conversion.

Here is how I did it...

Headlight:
Bought these used Eagle Eye headlight off of eBay for dirt cheap ($70). 3 of the LED's were burnt out but didn't matter since I was planning on swapping out with brighter LED's.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/Audi%20A4%20headlight%20Mod/eBayheadlight_zpsdf836641.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/Audi%20A4%20headlight%20Mod/eBayheadlight_zpsdf836641.jpg.html)

Replaced the "accent" LED's with 3w LED's that I soldered up.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/Audi%20A4%20headlight%20Mod/IMG_2770_zpsf9df3479.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/Audi%20A4%20headlight%20Mod/IMG_2770_zpsf9df3479.jpg.html)

The one on left is the modded one and the one on right is the original Eagle Eye.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/IMG_27781_zpsc0025a54.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/IMG_27781_zpsc0025a54.jpg.html)

It is bright as B8 OEM, has little more blue tint to it (6000k) which will match 55W 6000k HID headlight.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/IMG_27881_zpsb63c1cac.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/IMG_27881_zpsb63c1cac.jpg.html)

Since the modded LED has 140 projection angle, it is actually brighter from different angle than the OEM.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/IMG_27891_zpsd11e9712.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/IMG_27891_zpsd11e9712.jpg.html)

Here are the comparison of three.

Oh and I added amber LED's between white LED's to use it as my blinker (similar to new A8)

Here is the video if you are interested it how it works with the light switch. I had to VAG COM to turn amber lights off.

Bumper:

Bought this damaged B8 bumper from eBay for $60. I marked where they needed to be cut using some tape.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/CBB026E8-7EEB-4DD7-AE5B-15A0B483A8ED_zpsvusq4nx5.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/CBB026E8-7EEB-4DD7-AE5B-15A0B483A8ED_zpsvusq4nx5.jpg.html)

Taped/Screwed couple places so I can see how they fit up on my car. You can see the large gap between the B7 and B8 bumper where the grille goes. I probably didn't have to cut the B8 bumper at all in that area.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/4A9D78BA-5D70-48B8-8100-BDB323BF4142_zpsymtflaz9.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/4A9D78BA-5D70-48B8-8100-BDB323BF4142_zpsymtflaz9.jpg.html)

Plastic welded them together using stainless steel mesh and plastic strips cut from the original bumper. I know Felon used plastic epoxy to make his joint but I believe plastic welding with SS mesh on both sides creates stronger bond.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/4C07518F-D2D2-4316-95BC-8EFA3CDF7CB3_zpslm5bhg4t.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/4C07518F-D2D2-4316-95BC-8EFA3CDF7CB3_zpslm5bhg4t.jpg.html)

Sanded it all down.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/6A75D739-809C-492E-8277-50ED276842EC_zpsmr2efbgz.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/6A75D739-809C-492E-8277-50ED276842EC_zpsmr2efbgz.jpg.html)

Put some body putty on them.

I was able to fill the large gap on the front.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/0477F8C1-1996-4BBB-B360-65A64AA832E0_zps6zwi8fo7.jpg (http://s721.photobucket.com/user/sehankim/media/Audi%20A4/0477F8C1-1996-4BBB-B360-65A64AA832E0_zps6zwi8fo7.jpg.html)

The hardest part was getting this complex curve to match properly on the side.

Waiting on the fog lights and fog light grille to show up.

So if you have been thinking about getting the B8 look, I say Go for it.

Looks like a lot of effort. Personally I'm not a fan, but it's your car, do what you want to it. Looks kinda weird where it meet the wheel well.

Love the titanium rings though. I plan on doing my F&R rings titanium this spring/summer.

I know what you mean by that. It was either keep the flare on the wheel well or smooth it out like B8. I decided to keep the flare to keep the B7 line but definitely transition was bit tricky/weird.

Great job, I was scared when I saw the title. I would agree though, if you did a version two the side grills need to be cut down or something so they dont protrude so much.

thats honestly the one thing that kills it for me. Just doesn't look right.

Other than that, i absolutely love it, but definitely interested in some better photos from further away with the grills installed.

A+ for effort tho... takes a lot of work to get that done right!

Headlight took the longest but I was doing some preliminary testing and etc. But if one was to do the conversion using DIY, I would guess to be around 10 hours. I did the bumper (40 hours) and the grille (2 hours) over the holiday break here and there. The paint job was $240.

Great work. I want to make my wife's B7 look more aggressive and this is just the thing to do it. I would probably have to find a spare B7 bumper as well though since I can't really be without her car for a significant amount of time.

Wow you are going to seriously confuse people who see your car on the road or sitting at a parking lot. :-) Amazing job! I wouldn't do it myself personally but you really did something I thought was impossible! [up]

Add your DIY to the list of DIYS's up here on AZ. LOL!

It looks weird the way the fog grilles stick out past the body, kind of like someone with a very wide jaw or underbite...But thats a preference item, the work you put into this thing is bar none! That bumper looks so well done, it looks like it was made by some a manufacturer who has had years of experience, and I really don't like those headlights, but with the lighting you did, they look much better, kind of dig them now!

Nice job!

Great fab job, I expected to see one of the B8 styled bumpers designed to bolt right up to the B7. My only suggestions as said above would be to maybe try some RS4 front fenders to fill out the weird curve on the end of the bumper and to get a RS4 grille. Since you kept the non S-line, you could easily get an inexpensive grille and I think it would go much better with the aggressive look. And props for putting new LEDs in the eBay headlights. I always though they looked really tacky but your car can somehow pull them off. Kudos on the originality, it came out awesome for a DIY job.

Looks good. I was scared at first, because I thought your red painters tape was actual paint accents.

As others have said, for me personally, I would prefer brushed or chrome silver rings. Black on black on black is too much for me.

Question:
How did you properly figure out and align the two screws per side that we all love when removing our bumpers? I forget the mm size, but you know what I'm talking about.

Love the originality of this project. I always want to change my front end, but can't make up my mind of what to put. Did a bodykit conversion back in the days when we fitted an Evo IV kit to a Honda Accord in the mid 90's when eveyone was sporting VeilSide on every car show. I hate cookie cutters.

Looks good in the pics I can see Iceman. Get some proper photos up here so folks can see the work.

Felondnb's B8 conversion is second to none in quality, and is a work of art in it's originality, and so is difficult to compare.

As I've stated at the beginning, Felon's work is what inspired me to do mine. He's work is top notch for sure. As you can see it in one of his pictures, fog grille sits wide like mine.
http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/sehankim/Audi%20A4/Audi%20A4%20bumper%20mod/fbe7d60d9b1d226645cc5040dff581eb_zpsa75506dc.jpg

Besides using different method for joining two bumpers together, two major things are different. I extended the bumper down about 1/2"(you can see wider section of the bumper right below the grille) from standard height and the transition where two bumpers meet at the sides.

He built a shelf/ledge where two bumpers join together on both sides.

You can see it little better during his build.

where I tried to blend mine together.

It's just matter of different personal preferences on transitioning two different planes into one.

Oh that red thing you see is a reflection off of my golf bag I think lol. The only red accent are on my brake calipers :)

My daughter didn't like the flat black rings over gloss grille either. Her exact words were "are you going to keep it like that?" Haha. That's why I plasti dip the ring so I can just peel it off if I get tired of the look.

I guess you are referring to 10mm bolts and nuts that attaches to the fender. Those were biotch to get to and I had my buddy propping the bumper up while I tightened it. I didn't want any finger print marks on fresh paint, I had him stick his knee below the fog light opening to prop it up. I can see that I have a larger gap between the bumper and the hood but hopefully I can get this adjusted out without having to remove it.

That is such a long list. I can tell you that I bought pretty much everything from eBay. As far as your bumper mod goes, here is what you basically need.

- B8 bumper (get the one that's damaged on eBay since you will be cutting it up)
- B7 bumper (use your old one or buy one that's damaged)
- Plastic welder: $18 from Harbor Freight
- The other option is plastic epoxy but they are pricey
- Stainless Steel Mesh (for plastic welding) from McMasterCarr
- Premium Body Putty: I used Evercoat Poly Flex
- Sanding Block
- Sand paper 180 grit, 280 grit, 400 grit
- High build primer
- And your basic tools for bumper removal, dust mask, masking tape, jigsaw, and lots of elbow grease.

As far as the headlight MOD, I will most likely attempt DIY for EagleEye (and other similar aftermarket headlight) conversion. I've been road testing these mod set and they are holding up just fine for last 2 weeks.

This could of been a disaster but you pulled off a really nice modification. The only things I would add is: make the doors the same as S-Line and add a dtm rear bumper and the aggressiveness will flow from front to rear. Also if you don't want to sacrifice comfyness then just get a set of S-line shocks and springs and add B5 cups to the front to level it out. That way you aren't 4x4 but you aren't bottoming out on things.

Thank for your suggestion. This is the reason why I come to this forum, someone who gives honest criticism with a great possible solution. I will have to look into that. I didn't know S-line shocks/springs/cups would level out the front. Does B6 S-line shocks and springs fit my B7 non sline? I only have to change out the front? I will have to do some research on this.

I kid I kid lol sweet front end tho! Props

Damn! Haha.
I just don't want to take chance of rubbing. I thought about B5 spring cap mod but those are 19x8.5 with 5 mm spacers on front and hate for them to rub or ride rough.

What et? Depends... I'm et35 in front and lower than stock sport with B5 perches, and not rubbing. Your A4 looks higher my dad's Santa Fe...

I'm sitting on 19x8.5 et35 with 235 35 and around 24.5 ftg and I have yet to rub on a very very rough under construction highway. I can just fit a finger between my tire and the lip of the fender
