Who has a stock turbo for me :P
Mine has axial and radial play so... might as well if the mechanic is going to be in there. I'm looking for one without axial or radial play obviously.
Let me know what you have or where I can get one cheap.
Thanks.

I also have one good condition no shaft play with 80k
How do you know the head gasket is blown?

Assuming it is. Driving home yesterday when it just starts making a huge smoke screen behind me. Idle got rough and the temp needle started to get a bit cold. Thought it was just my pcv but cleaned that out and took it for a drive today and it was still smoking especially on boost. Leak down and compression test tomorrow though.
Sounds like PCV and thermostat, a head gasket job is not cheap, definitely avoid it at all costs

Head gasket ain't hard. Well, relatively speaking.
Never mind, it's a lot of work.

Meh like 7-8 hours worth of work...not ideal to pay someone

Any evidence of coolant in the oil?

Assuming you can get it inside or the weather cooperates! [;)] Just saw that your are in CT; get it in a garage before you tear in to it. I just had my TB break and had to do everything outside. NOT FUN. Summer wouldn't have been so bad, but get in out of the cold.
It's tedious but not horrible. I will say that if you're going to ever do an HFC, that would be the time to do it.
Adam hit the key question: Coolant in your oil, or vice versa? We're talking about 1 minute total to check both, including popping the hood & shutting it.
Thermostat is a PITA job, and if you're anywhere near needing to do a the timing belt, just do it early and be done with it.

Yeah I just did the tstat maybe 4k ago with a timing belt. There is a little evidence of coolant in my oil.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/10/ma8y7eju.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/10/ase5u6aj.jpg

I just had my catch can (CC) freeze up on me the other day and had similar symptoms; I would say that since your dipstick is clean but you have gunk on the filler cap, that it's PCV related. Are you on the stock PCV or are you running a CC setup? I would recommend making sure whichever setup you have is working correctly and doesn't have any blockages. There is a thread about catch cans freezing up HERE (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/519999-Frozen-catch-can-white-grayish-smoke-need-input-from-the-2-0TFSI-gurus!?highlight=frozen).
If your turbo housing isn't beat up, you may be able to do a rebuild on your turbo; rebuild kits are $50-ish and since these are journal bearing turbos, the hardest part is getting the little b@$tard out of the engine bay.

I'm running a catch can. After I got home I emptied it and melted all the frozen stuff in it.

Went for a drive today. Seems my turbo is shot. Head gasket seems less likely. Only smokes when letting off boost like around 4k rpm or so
