So how hard is a t-belt replacement on a 2.0T? I've never done this on an Audi before so are there any special tools or tips for this? If anybody is local to Socal area can help out, I'd be more than willing to compensate somehow!

The job is not too hard. Just need the normal assortment of tools to work on any Audi. Most of the timing belt "kits" which include the water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, etc. include instructions. There are a few DIYs on the forum like the one leftovers referenced. Helps to study the various DIYs to have a good understanding before hand and then take your time doing it.

They are nuts !!!
Thermostat can be a pain to access and being nice, I give 1 hour
Tensioner has to be removed to replace the TB so no additional time
Same as above for the idler pulley

Just got off the phone. He said all of the additional labor was for the t-stat. Said its not located in the timing belt area and that they have to get behind the alternator and other parts to reach it. He ended up taking half the labor off for it. Also, during this service I also requested that he check the cam follower which he did at no charge.

Tho good gestures, still have a bad taste in my mouth.

Brent, how many miles are you at again?

99500 miles. With chip and long trips ahead (plus impending sub-zero weather) I figured now was better than later.

Do it! I used Phil's DIY and asked a bunch of q's to the group ..it went fairly smoothly. I looked at a couple other threads as well. Count the teeth carefully, torque it all down to spec w loctite. You'll be fine. Good luck.

Thats a decent chunk he took off. To be honest though, Doing the thermostat is no more than 2 hours working in your driveway at a leisurely pace. Its quite easy, aside from needing a 6mm triple square or whatever it is you need to take a bolt off the hardline to detach it from the thermostat. Yes its not in the EXACT same place as the timing belt,. but its like 5" away from that exact space. But whatever, $200 for the labor isn't so bad I suppose...

The timing belt job is the hardest thing ever.....it is also the easiest thing ever....all relevant to your perspective and background.

Hahah. This. Its VERY intimidating for someone who's never done it. But once you do it, you're like "that was easy..."

So what would be a reasonable timeframe for a shop that claims to be specialists in Audi performance and repairs? I have a local place I plan on getting quoted from (hopefully they let me bring in my own parts which I will buy from Europaparts) that has great feedback and reviews. Local Audi quoted me $1250 for the whole job including thermostat, tensioner, pulley, and S-belt with labor, but I figure the parts are like $350-400 and labor from a reputable non-dealer mechanic might be another $250-$300 at $80 / hour roughly?

THat sounds about right. $500-ish labor, $250-ish parts. Depends on what all they're replacing.
