Guten Tag, meine Freunde!
To be honest, I've been browsing this forum for a long time, though I never managed to find the motivation to post up my own thread about my own car. So I guess now's the time![:)]

The car is a 2002 A6 1.8 Turbo Quattro, which also has the sport suspension and 5-speed manual transmission. As far as I'm concerned I noticed this setup is only aviable here in Europe.
I bought the car in march 2013, after searching the interwebz for about a month or so, looking for this exact combination. As far as reliability goes, not much beats the 1.8T in theese cars over here. The 4.2 is just way too expensive here.
Finally, on a cold(ish) day in march 2013 I drove down south. 550 miles to be more exact. Given I live in Norway, the roads are shitty during winter/spring months, but I decided to go for it no matter what. I really wanted this car.

When I finally made it there, I testdrove, got all the paperwork for previous mechanic work, and really searched for errors on the car. Not much negative were to be found. I bought it, and started my trip home.

The day I bought it:

As you might've noticed, its a black on black interior, with a single-din Audi Concert II unit, and leather sports seats. Dark brown trim. Ill get more into detail as soon as Im off work.

More to come later tonight! [:)]

Pretty cool. Always weird to see such a big car with the 1.8

That is awesome, I wish they had stuff like that here. I probably would buy that exact car over my allroad.

Thanks you two! I really like the car, havent had any problems so far except for gas prices. I drive way too much. [;)]

So after I finally got home from getting the car, the first thing I did as far as "mods", was refreshing the headlights. As you probably saw in the first post, they were quite neglected.
I started off by changing the projector lenses inside the headlight itself. I didn't like the light output from the Fresnel OEM lens, so I ordered a set of ZKW-R lenses from Theretrofitsource.com

Next up was sanding the headlight plastic lenses with 800grit sandpaper (dry), then 1000 (dry), 1000(wet), 1500(wet) and finally 2000 and 2500 (both wet). After the sanding was done and I was satisfied, I went on to polishing the lenses.
I started off using Scholl S03Gold polish, then finished with Plast-X. In the end, the lenses had a coat of Swissvax Shield as a protectant.

Managed to break the butyl-seal around the plastic lens, to open up the headlight. It took some heat from a heatgun, and it was suddenly all smeary.

As you can see, the lens has circular patterns in it. Theese destroyed my light output.. So I continued like this:

Prying on the reflector tabs with a flathead screwdriver, while I pulled the reflector out towards the front of the car

I'll just keep posting updates up to todays date, as I gather pictures from previous work I've done. I find it a nice way to keep all the information in one thread, as this is a build/project thread. [:)]

Adding Auxiliary lights to the A6

Okay, so adding auxiliary lights was the next stop on the long road to satisfaction. As I've promised a few guys on here, I'll do a writeup as detailed as possible, hopefully on a understandable level.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5333/8879301440_f86f10df33_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/8879301440/)

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3667/8879315510_25bdfe48e1_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/8879315510/)
20130304_000055 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/8879315510/) by Northhomie (http://www.flickr.com/people/60635142@N03/), on Flickr

Items you will need, include:

- Auxiliary lamps of your preference
- Wireing harness (relay switch, and wires)
- Auxuliary lamp bracket (I used the license plate type in this project)
- Screws of your preference to fasten bracket to bumper
- Top stabilizer bars of your preference to reduce vibration (not needed if the aux lamps are lightweight)
- Eigther halogen bulbs, or HID kit (in this DIY I've gone with 100w HID kits @4300K.
- Obvious tools (e.g. battery-powered screwdriver, shaft spanners of your choice, pliers etc)

Heres a schematic I made for the wireing I did. Its pretty self-explanatory.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5543/11684583695_be36a396a7_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/11684583695/)

You can do whatever you prefer to join the red wire to the hot highbeam OEM wire on the OEM harness. (The wire that sends power to OEM highbeams, you can find this wire with a voltmeter).

Further along, onto the auxiliary lamp bracket. I removed the license plate and license plate frame, to screw the bracket tightly onto the bumper. Then I reinstalled the license plate ontop of it.

Now it should look like this

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2826/11684492885_f17c272d56_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/11684492885/)

Continue by mounting the auxiliary lamps ontop of each 90 degree . Don't screw them on too tightly yet. You wanna adjust them after you're done. (Car was dity, I know..)

nice I am actually putting together some aux lights for my allroad!! I like the extra light on some of our unlite back country roads. now in the pic where you have the aux lights on do you have only 2 or 3 hooked up? are they pointed in sightline with you headlights or turned down slightly to avoid blinding oncoming traffic? and your wiring to the HIGH beam is the relay active turning the aux lights on with high beams or un active so that the aux lights are only on with your low beams?

my thought was to have them set up as on with the lows and then off when my high beams are on. but include an over ride so that I can turn the aux lights on at anytime.

Ive always had a thought of puting a 20" led light bar in the lower grill. And nice ride dude, I looked into b6 avants before I bought my allroad.

How many watts are those suckers?

I just did a bit of a test on my 6" PIAA lights. Ive got 1 that ive converted to HID 35W 5000K. And a set of the original PIAA bulbs which are 85W!!! But yellow :-(. Holy shit they throw off a ton of heat which im leary of putting in front of the grille. But the 35W is not nearly as bright as the PIAA bulbs. Id like to know more on the OP bulbs colors and wattage (75 or 100W 2 different ballasts in images above) Maybe i can go with 2 x100 Watt HIDs and a single 35w hid in the middle.... But i dont think i would light up as much road as OP!

They range. Theres a shitload of them out there all different types, volts, watts, lumens, ect. From what I have read the watts can be anywhere from 2-5 per LED. They do run very cool and put out some great lighting. And they look sick.

Hey canadianA4B7! I started off with two aux lights, but being curious on how a 3rd one would look like, I had to buy a 3rd one after a month or so. Digging it!!
The outer aux lights are pointed 4-6 degrees outwards horizontally, lights up the ditches pretty nice while still lighting up the road also. The center one has a pencil beam reflector, meaning it shoots the beam very concentrated and doesn't spread as good as the other two. I have this one pointed straight forward, and it lights up 3600~4000 ft on a nice day.

The aux lights has an active relay, that flicks on whenever i turn the OEM highbeams on. This is the only legal way to do it where I live. We're not allowed to use aux lights along with lowbeams, and i wouldnt recommend it. Other drivers would get sunburnt...

Thanks mate! I thought about a led bar also, but we have so much snow here. It will just get fed up with snow and not be able to light up anything. It doesnt get hot, so the snow won't melt.

My bulbs is 100watt HID bulbs with ceramic sockets to withstand the heat. The ballasts is also 100watt, all three of em. The schematic was just for show. The bulbs is 4300K. Effective lumen output is around 32000lumens with aux and oem highbeams at the same time.

Dude the light output from your car with those lights is insane! lol

Haha, thanks! It's decent.

Love the light output. What color is your interior trim?

Thanks! [:)] Interior trim is black on black, with very dark brown trim. I don't know the exact color code on it, I could find out if you really want me to.

This is very impressive. But how do you open the hood now?

Hehe, you're not the first one asking. Let me snow you [:)]

On each end of the rod going across the aux lights, there is a ball bearing which is secured with a small clip. You simply flick off the clip, and unhook the stabilizer bars, Just as if you were to add or remove a trailer to your car.

Thanks for putting this together Kevin!!! I can't wait for my set up to arrive!

Not a problem, let me know if you need anything [:)]

Just awesome! So an extra 300W! Now yours do not look yellow at all? I would assume 4300k would look a tiny bit yellow. Im liking the directional choices you suggest, i few degrees outward, and the pencil type bulb center. Ive seen countless guys running 6" lights as "fogs" mostly on trucks. they turn them downward approx 2.5"-4" from a 25' point. So they are slighty lighting up "the fog around the front". I plan on trying to hook up what ive got as is for now. Ill just hook up 2 6" PIAA bulbs for now as youve suggested. Ill hook them up w high beams but ill also have an over ride. Also ive totally stole your idea using some L steel behind the plate! Im sure mine wont look oem at first but once i build a brush bar it will look somewhat decent.

Thanx for the info. Got the wheels turning!

What are those mounts you used called the ball bearing type with the clip. Need to find something like that.

That's right, 300W extra HID lightning. The 4300K bulbs is as you say, a tad yellow (ish). I wouldn't really say it's yellow, its more like a cream white color. I tried the 6000K 100w bulbs too, but that's just way too blue and sacrifices ALOT of lumens.. Id say the lumens is reduced about 25% with 6000K bulbs. To show you guys the difference in color, I made a short video... (Im sorry about the music, haha)!

4300K on the sides, and 6000K in the middle. I switched back to 3x 4300K after this, as 6000K bulbs lack alot of output.

The mount im using ontop of the lights is this one

http://www.oljebaren.se/en/light-bracket-and-accessories/accessories/stabilizer/top-rod-with-quick-hitch

I'd say its needed with theese lights cause they are big and heavy. Mind you: In the video i linked, I did NOT use this bar ontop. You can see the vibrations...

That video helps a lot I can barely see the hue of yellow it's noticeable but not like looking through yellow glasses. I'm gonna work on a mount for mine in the next few days. We just got 6" of snow. Wish i got mine on last week now!

I've been thinking of adding two aux lights, although smaller than yours, to the front of my allroad. Thanks for the write up.

I don't think they would be street legal in most of the US.

I wouldn't use them on the main roads. There are plenty of back roads around here and my parents house that I could use them. I would most likely keep covers on them when not in use. There are so many big trucks and Jeeps around here that have off road lights it's not a big deal.

Leather Treatment April 17th 2013

After having had the car for over a month, I decided to fresh up the interior. Leather treatment!

After having about 170.000 miles on the road, the interior was in pretty good shape. The drivers seat was a little worn, but nothing major.

- Remove covers in the back, allowing the sliders to slide out of position^
- Disconnect airbag and other sockets under the seat
- Push seat back towards the trunk

Just posting some old stuff first, up to date. To get everything in the right order. [:)]

May 5th 2013 - August 2013

So finally summer got around up here in Norway too.
In May I decided to get myself a set of new wheels, as the ones that came with the car didn't look too appealing.
I thought about replica RS6 wheels, but in the end the decision fell on buying a COMPLETE brand new set RS6 wheels from Germany!

The wheels are 235/35 R19. Decided to buy a set of cheap tires to go with them, as I heard alot of good things about the tires.

October 15th 2013, Engine compartment upgrading

I had been driving the car all summer long without anything happening to it, until i had a high pitched whining sound appear late summer. I started concluding with it being the turbo going bad.
It still boosted fine, but the sounds got worse and worse.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDdxeBS_kSs

So i browsed the internet for a while, originally I searched for a used k03 to replace my old one. However I decided to go this route instead:

-Frankenturbo F21L Turbo (k04 Hybrid)
-Frankenturbo High Flow Exhaust Manifold
-Frankenturbo 3" Turbo Inlet pipe
-Bosch EV14 550cc Injectors
-034Motorsport 250cell High Flow Catalytic Converter

A few days after ordering, the shipment arrived.

After a little research I went with the Motoza k04 hybrid tune for my setup. So far it works really well, boosting approx. 20PSI.

I also happened to buy a boost gauge some weeks earlier. I wanted to do both the turbo setup and the boost gauge at the same time, so I started tearing down the interior

15th February 2014 - New headlights & retrofitted

A new year has arrived, and more opportunities and mods awaits. First mod I did this year were the headlights.
I got tired of the old low beam projectors. They were about to get useless. The chrome inside the projectors were neglected as this was originally a halogen headlight car.
The chrome wasn't as reflecting as it was when it was new, and were cracked and faded brown colored. This ofcourse affected light output, and the decision was made.

Since I wanted to go full out on this rebuild, I went for NEW OEM HEADLIGHTS and alot of retrofit stuff from Theretrofitsource.

- New headlights (OEM)
- Hella Evox-R Projector x2
- Morimoto XB35 5000K D2S-bulb x2
- Morimoto 5five D2S Ballast x2
- Morimoto Heavy Duty 80A relay harness
- Philips X-treme Vision H7 high beam bulbs @55W

Opening up the headlights

I started by opening the new headlights, splitting them in two. That way I could get a hold of the projector quite easily. I tried taking out my old projectors from the back once, it didn't quite work out.

- 150*F in the oven for 20 minutes
- When 20 minutes have passed, quickly take out headlight from oven and start prying the lens off of the housing.
- Remove old glue and replace

So in about half an hours' work, it went from this

Removing the reflector bowl with the projector assy - Prying the clips upward and out of the way - while sliding the reflector forward towards the headlight lens (that we have already removed)

First removing the reflector transport-fasteners at the back end of the assembly

Then , using a flathead screwdriver, releasing the clips from the front end while pulling on the reflector

Now onto removing the old projector from the reflector surround. Note that 3 of theese screws are already used to hold the EvoX-R projector together. So the 3 screws were removed, and replaced with the OEM screws to hold the projector in place.

Now it looked like this

And with the reflector assembly and projector back in place.

Then I heated up the headlight assembly with a heat gun, to make the glue softer. And back on goes the headlight lens!

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3676/12442038404_0bc4905afd_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/12442038404/)

To make the lens seat properly to the headlight assembly, I used clamps to press it together while adding oem clamps along the way

I got pretty tired at this time, and decided to continue the next day. It had snowed a great deal over night, and the view out the window now looked like this (oh joy, quattro weather with no headlights)... [:D]

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7349/12442708484_b80c70a626_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/12442708484/)

And back to the headlights. Since I was done replacing the projectors, I started doing the wireing.
The bixenon solenoid had to be soldered together with the OEM high beam harness to assure function. Pretty straight forward job as the pictures will tell.

The black and white connector being the highbeam, I started by removing the terminals from the connector

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2819/12442772105_811868f19b_b.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60635142@N03/12442772105/)

And placed them in a clamp for easy and secure soldering

This build is so very, very beautiful. Thank you, this is excellent work and an inspiration. I'm not sure if there is anything better than an older car tastefully upgraded and immaculately cared for.

Just beautiful [up]
