Hey guys, need a quick answer before i go to the dealer today. I just finished a 13 hour, 1200km odyssey, pulled up to the gas station to fill up, only to have the engine start missing as if a coil pack had gone. Opened the hood, and there's a funky smell coming off the turbo. Sure enough, when I pulled the code it was a P0299, Turbocharger underboost.
Now my question is:
This past Thursday, I installed a Podi mechanical gauge. Could that have done in my turbo? I was getting intermittent ticks from the turbo/cat area before.
Here's hoping the dealer doesn't void my CPO warranty because of the catch-can and boost gauge.

Nah, neither one of those would cause an issue with the turbo. Boost leak or the waste gate is weak.
Pressure test the intake, If you just installed the podi, make sure all the connections are tight, usually when you get a code after an install, its due to improper install.
If you have no leaks, then swap the wastegate, after a bajillion cycles the spring tends to weaken and they can be pushed down by the exhaust stream which releases flow to the turbine and causes you to underboost.

I would check your DV and see if it is torn as it is fairly simple to do.

Hmm check your PCV?

I heard a gfb can fix all the problems! Even oil leaks and blown head gaskets!

I replaced my PCV system with a catch can in the spring.
And wowie! Does it fix autotragic troubles as well??

probably could...only time will tell!
Did you pressure test?

No i didnt. I was too beat last night. Sorry for the snarkiness. Its weird, i took it to the dealer today, and it's holding boost fine. Wondering if its a one time deal?
I want to say really got metal smell, but I honestly can't remember

Check your intercooler hoses for tears or if one popped off? Check your map sensor too.
I think Jake is right on the money, if the dealer pressure tests it and it comes back good, and your dv is good, then log the wastegate duty, and boost pressure because your wastegate might be done, otherwise it's a faulty map sensor

Yeah could also be a faulty N75.

So update: had the issue fixed a few weeks ago, turned out DV failed taking the turbo with it.all covred under CPO warranty. Drove back to Vic no problem.
Fast forward afew weeks, driving back home to Edmontom again, and the temp drops down to -24C from -8C in the space of a km. this time no symptoms as of yet that something wrong, but during a turn the e-brake light flashes indicating low brake fluid or brake pads. To be on the safe side I pull over, and run codes. Nothing about the brakes, but all the readiness monitors after the turbo don't respond, and you guessed it, P0299 pops up again. Managed to limp to a friends place about 20 min ahead. As soon as I stopped, dashboard light up like a Christmas tree.
Getting it towed to the nearest dealership right now, thank God I still have CPO for another month.
Now the question is, could abrupt drop in outside temp and pressure cause the DV to fail like this? This is the second time this has happened in the same conditions. Cold and going through the mountains.
Thanks guys!
